Installing port and screen licenses and allocating to MSE blades

How do I install port and screen licenses and allocate them to MSE blades?

Port and screen licenses are provided by Cisco so that you can increase the number of ports that are licensed without requiring new hardware (up to the maximum available on a particular blade type). Also you can license a number of ports and share the licenses over a number of MSE 8000 blades of the same type to provide redundancy. Finally, you can swap a blade with a spare of the same type as required without needed to change the port/screen licence configuration.

Port/screen licenses apply to a particular blade type and therefore you need different license keys for each type of blade:

  • media port license key for Media and Media2 blades
  • PRI port license key for ISDN GW blades
  • port license key for IP GW blades
  • recording port license key for VCR blades
  • screen licence key for MSE 8710 Telepresence Server blades
  • serial port license key for Serial Gateway blades
For more information see the online help topic, Displaying the port license summary available on the Supervisor blade's web interface.
Note: Some blades may use more than one port/screen license to activate a port.

Note: Port and screen licenses are stored on the chassis and tied in to the chassis serial number. (If you ordered the port/screen licenses with the chassis they are pre-installed on the chassis for you.) Therefore you cannot transfer port licenses between chasses, even when the blade type is the same. You can add new license keys at any time: on the Supervisor's web interface go to Port licences and click Add key. Display the online help for more information.

Even when licenses are pre-installed on the chassis, they need to be allocated to blades. This is done using the Supervisor blade - if you are not running Supervisor v1.2(1.5) or later, see the notes below.

To allocate licenses to blades:

  1. Go to Port licences.
  2. Click on the link for the type of port license that you want to allocate.
All the Allocation pages have the same layout irrespective of port license type. You see the type of blade in each slot, the current license status, the port capacity of the blade and the number of ports of the type you selected that are currently allocated to it.
  3. Change the allocation as appropriate and click Update allocation.

For more information see the online help topic, Allocating port licenses to blades.

Notes: Do not install Supervisor v1.2(1.5) or later unless you have the license keys to hand. If you are upgrading from a version pre-1.2(1.5), first ensure that you have the correct licenses. To do this, raise a case with Cisco customer support at including the Chassis serial number of the MSE 8000 chassis. This information is provided in two places:
  • In the Hardware > Chassis page
  • In the Status > General > System status page

Please also email a list of the blades that you have installed in your MSE 8000 system. We will email you your correct licenses and send you a link to download the latest Supervisor blade release code. The following instructions detail how to upgrade your Supervisor version:

  1. If you have not already done so, back up your configuration on to the CompactFlash card.
  2. Upgrade to the latest Supervisor version.
  3. Log in to the Supervisor blade as the administrator and follow the instructions on the new Activation page wizard that is displayed automatically:
    1. In the Load backup configuration section, click No backup.
    2. Click Inspect port license allocation to enter port license keys for each type of blade that you have and then allocate port licenses to blades.
    3. Click Activate.

In the unlikely event that the Supervisor blade fails at a later date, no other blades are affected because the port license allocation for each blade is stored in that blade's configuration file.

If you need to swap Supervisor blades, you are taken to the new Activation page wizard.

    • If you transfer the CompactFlash card from the old Supervisor blade to the new one, you can transfer not only the configuration of the Supervisor blade but also all the port license allocation information using this Activation page.
    • Alternatively, you can go through the steps of configuring the blade and allocating port licenses again manually to make sure that all your blades can continue operating as before.
