Cisco NextPort SPE Firmware and Dial Feature Card Overview
NextPort SPE firmware is software that drives the digital signal processor (DSP) portion of the NextPort dial feature cards (DFCs). NextPort firmware is bundled with Cisco IOS software.
NextPort SPE firmware runs on the NextPort DFC60, DFC108, 1 CT3, UPC 216, and UPC324 DFCs on the Cisco AS5350, Cisco AS5400, and Cisco AS5850 platforms. The ports on these modules can support modem, voice, fax, and digital services and can be aggregated at any of the following levels:
•Slot level of the NextPort module
•SPE level within the NextPort module
•Individual port level
Note To use the NextPort Voice Tuning feature, you must upgrade from the default NextPort SPE firmware code that runs with Cisco IOS software to NextPort SPE firmware release 8.8.1. Release 8.8.1 can be downloaded from the Software Center on Cisco.com.

NextPort Voice Tuning
Note To use the NextPort Voice Tuning feature, you must upgrade from the default NextPort SPE firmware code that runs with Cisco IOS software to NextPort SPE firmware release 8.8.1 or later. Release 8.8.1 can be downloaded from the Software Center on Cisco.com.
Voicecaps
Voicecaps are a means to tune voice services and potentially provide improved voice quality. The following parameters, among others, can be configured:
•PSTN gains
•IP gains
•Dynamic attenuation
•Comfort noise generation (CNG)
•Minimum ERL—Switches off near-end talker clipping and poor echo canceller performance
Voice services on NextPort DFCs can be tuned with voicecap strings, which are configured and applied using the voicecap entry and voicecap configure commands.

Downloading NextPort SPE Firmware
To download NextPort SPE firmware, use the following commands.

Creating and Applying Voicecaps
Note To create and apply voicecaps, it is required that you contact Cisco Technical Response Center (TAC).
The steps in this section allow you to configure a voicecap on a single voice port. Although voicecaps can be used to configure any of the voice service parameters, voicecaps are primarily used to configure only those parameters that do not have associated Cisco IOS commands.
The voicecap entry name string command configures NextPort SPE firmware through voicecap strings in global configuration mode. This command allows you to assign values to specific registers. Voicecaps are applied to specific voice ports at system startup.
The voicecap configure name command applies a voicecap on NextPort platforms in voice-port configuration mode.
Restrictions
•Voicecaps are configured in global configuration mode. A maximum of five voicecap entries can be defined.
•Applying a voicecap is possible only in voice-port configuration mode. Once applied to a voice port, the voicecap affects all calls associated with that voice port.
•An SPE image capable of voice tuning must be used in conjunction with a Cisco IOS release 12.3(1)M or later

Technical Assistance Center
The Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) is available to all customers who need technical assistance with a Cisco product, technology, or solution. Two levels of support are available: the Cisco TAC Web Site and the Cisco TAC Escalation Center.
Cisco TAC inquiries are categorized according to the urgency of the issue:
•Priority level 4 (P4)—You need information or assistance concerning Cisco product capabilities, product installation, or basic product configuration.
