Cisco ICS 7750 FRU Installation and Replacement

This document explains how to install and remove field-replaceable units (FRUs) in the Cisco Integrated Communications System (ICS) 7750 (referred to as the Cisco ICS 7750).

The following Cisco ICS 7750 components are FRUs:

Analog station interface (ASI) cards.

Fan tray.

Multiservice route processor (MRP) 200 and 300 cards.

MRP3-8FXS and MRP3-16FXS cards.

Power supply modules.

System alarm processor (SAP) card.

System processing engine (SPE) 310 cards.

System switch processor (SSP) card.

Voice interface cards (VICs), voice WAN interface cards (VWICs), and WAN interface cards (WICs). VICs, VWICs, and WICs are subcomponents of ASIs and MRPs.


Note This document is not intended for use with SPE200s. If you need assistance with an SPE200, contact the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (see the "Technical Assistance Center" section).



Note The MRP200 and MRP300 cards are both voice-and-data-capable routers that support digital and analog voice trunks and WAN routing interfaces to link remote Ethernet LANs to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), to existing private branch exchanges (PBXs), and to most common analog devices, such as fax machines and teleconferencing stations. The MRP300 has additional functionality provided by 16 MB of onboard Flash memory, with 64 MB of add-on Flash memory available as an option. Configuration files for the MRP200 are loaded and saved to the SPE running System Manager, whereas configuration files for the MRP300 are loaded and saved on the MRP300 in nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM).



Note The ASI81 and MRP3-8FXS cards are both voice-and-data-capable routers that can carry voice traffic over an IP network to link remote Ethernet LANs to central offices over WAN links (depending on the type of card installed in its WIC/VIC/VWIC slot). Each card can support eight connections to analog telephones, fax machines, and teleconferencing stations. The MRP3-8FXS has additional functionality provided by 16 MB of onboard Flash memory, with 64 MB of add-on Flash memory available as an option. Configuration files for the MRP3-8FXS are loaded and saved on the MRP3-8FXS in NVRAM. The MRP3-16FXS card has the same Flash memory capability, with support for 16 connections.

Required Tools and Equipment


Warning Only personnel who are trained and qualified (IP Telephony certified for the Cisco ICS 7750) should be allowed to install or replace this equipment.


You need the following tools and parts to install and maintain the system. If you need additional equipment, contact a customer service representative for ordering information.

A number-1 Phillips screwdriver for installing the cable management bracket (recommended) and mounting the system.

A 6-mm open-end wrench for adjusting the grounding lug.

ESD-prevention equipment or the disposable ESD-preventive wrist strap included in the hardware accessory kit.

Antistatic mat, foam pad, or bag for removed cards or modules. (Put removed components inside an antistatic bag if you plan to return them to the factory; if you are replacing components, place them on an antistatic mat or foam pad.)

Cables and adapters:

1 straight-through Category 5 Ethernet cable.

1 RJ-45-to-DB-9 adapter.

1 console (rolled EIA/TIA-232) cable.

To remove, install, and replace SPEs, you need the following additional tools and parts:

Cisco ICS 7750 chassis equipped with one or more SPE310s.

One or more spare SPE310s.

(Optional) Application CDs for applications to be installed on the SPE(s) (for example, Cisco CallManager software for the Cisco ICS 7750).

Windows-based PC or laptop, which may be connected both to the SSP Ethernet port and the SAP console port. (Specific requirements for this PC are described in the "PC Requirements" section.)

Cisco ICS 7750 System Software, which can be installed from the following sources, with the following options:

CD-ROM—The system software release 2.x.x CD-ROM contains a complete set of the system software, including Microsoft SQL Server software and Microsoft hotfixes. The CD-ROM can be used to install release 2.x on an SPE310 that does not currently have system software installed, or it can be used to upgrade an SPE310 that currently has system software release 2.1 or 2.2 installed.

For instructions on installing the software from the CD-ROM, refer to the "Upgrading System Software on SPE310s from the CD-ROM" section in Chapter 8, "Maintaining the Cisco ICS 7750," in the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide. For download and installation instructions from CCO, refer to the "Downloading and Installing System Software" section in Chapter 8, "Maintaining the Cisco ICS 7750," in the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide.

CCO—Two sets of system software release 2.x.x are available for downloading from CCO:

S77a-2.x.x.exe—This package contains the complete set of system software version 2.x.x, including Microsoft SQL Server software, and can be used for new installations or upgrades of existing system software.

S77a-Upgrade-2.x.x.exe—This package contains only the software components changed since release 2.1 and necessary to upgrade the ICS system software from release 2.1 or 2.2. It does not contain Microsoft SQL Server software, and so, the package is smaller and results in shorter download times. This upgrade package cannot be used for SPE310 reimaging or reinstallation of ICS system software.

Two options are presented during the installation process that determine which software set will be installed:

Install ICS System Manager Software—Select this option to install System Manager on the SPE310. There must be one (and only one) SPE310 running ICS System Manager software in the chassis.

Install ICS Core Software—Select this option to install ICS Core Software on any additional SPEs in the chassis, if another SPE310 is already running the ICS System Manager software.

The Cisco ICS 7750 system software packages use the naming conventions shown in Table 1.

1 Each system software package contains an IOS software image for the MRPs and ASIs, an IOS software image for the SSP, ICS System Manager, and ICS Core Software. The first system software package listed is the full Cisco ICS 7750 System Software package, which is capable of doing a full installation or an upgrade of existing system software. The second system software package listed is for software upgrades of existing Cisco ICS 7750 system software only. This package will only be available on CCO. See the "Required Tools and Equipment" section for the URL of the CCO software.

Note Beginning with release 2.4.0, the Cisco ICS 7750 System Software installation CD contents and upgrade-only packages are available on CCO in a compressed format. The files distributed on CCO are packaged as a single self-extracting EXE. Refer to the Cisco Voice Software download page at http://www.cisco.com/kobayashi/sw-center/sw-voice.shtml for the CCO version. You will have to download the EXE file to your SPE310 and then invoke the executable by double-clicking the file. This expands the package files and automatically creates the directory structure required for installation. For installation instructions, refer to the "Upgrading System Software" section in Chapter 8, "Maintaining the Cisco ICS 7750," in the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide.



Note The full ICS System Software package (CD or CCO version) is needed if you are replacing the SPE running System Manager.


PC Requirements

You may choose to use a PC (or laptop computer) to download and install software and to perform system management tasks, such as remote configuration or troubleshooting. The PC does not need to be physically near the ICS 7750 chassis because tasks can be executed locally on the SPE310 with an attached keyboard, mouse, and monitor.

Ensure that the PC meets the following requirements:

CPU: Pentium-class 233 MHz or faster

Memory: At least 64 MB of RAM

Hardware:

CD-ROM drive

Network interface card (NIC)

Available COM port

PC keyboard with PS/2-style or USB (Universal Serial Bus) connector

Windows-compatible mouse with PS/2-style or USB or connector

Monitor: SVGA monitor or LCD display with at least 800 x 600 resolution and at least 256 colors (1024 x 768 resolution is recommended)

Operating system: Microsoft Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows XP, Windows NT, or Windows 2000

Web browser: Netscape Communicator 4.7 or later, or Internet Explorer 5.5 or later, with Java plug-in version 1.3.1 or later (refer to the Cisco Software Download web site at http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/java).

Communication software: Microsoft Terminal Services Client

Safety Precautions and Maintenance Guidelines

This section describes guidelines that you should follow when working on the Cisco ICS 7750.

General Safety Precautions

Read the warnings in this section before working on the system.


Warning Read the installation instructions before you connect the system to its power source.



Warning Do not work on the system or connect or disconnect cables during periods of lightning activity.



Warning This product relies on the building's installation for short-circuit (overcurrent) protection. Ensure that a fuse or circuit breaker no larger than 120 VAC, 15A U.S. (240 VAC, 16A international) is used on the phase conductors (all current-carrying conductors).



Warning This equipment is intended to be grounded. Ensure that the host is connected to earth ground during normal use.



Warning Only personnel who are trained and qualified (IP Telephony certified for the Cisco ICS 7750) should be allowed to install or replace this equipment.



Warning Before working on equipment that is connected to power lines, remove jewelry (including rings, necklaces, and watches). Metal objects will heat up when connected to power and ground and can cause serious burns or weld the metal object to the terminals.



Warning The device is designed to work with TN power systems.



Warning The SPE contains a lithium battery. There is the danger of explosion if the battery is replaced incorrectly. Replace the battery only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer. Dispose of used batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions.


ESD Safety Precautions

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage equipment and impair electrical circuitry. ESD occurs when electronic printed circuit cards are improperly handled. ESD can result in complete or intermittent failures. Always follow these ESD-prevention procedures when removing and replacing cards and other system components:

Ensure that the chassis is electrically connected to earth ground.

Wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap, ensuring that it makes good skin contact.

Connect the clip to an unpainted surface of the chassis frame to safely channel ESD voltages to ground.

To properly guard against ESD damage and shocks, the wrist strap must be used correctly. If no wrist strap is available, ground yourself by touching the metal part of the chassis.


Caution For safety, periodically check the resistance value of the antistatic strap, which should be between 1 and 10 megohms (Mohms).


Caution Static voltages as low as 30 volts can cause latent damage to circuitry. Be sure to observe all standard antistatic procedures (for example, wear a grounding strap) when handling electronic equipment and components.


Warning Blank faceplates (filler panels) serve three important functions: they prevent exposure to hazardous voltages and currents inside the chassis; they contain electromagnetic interference (EMI) that might disrupt other equipment; and they direct the flow of cooling air through the chassis. Do not operate the system unless all cards and faceplates are in place.


Safety with Electricity


Note The following guidelines are IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS.


Follow these guidelines when working on equipment powered by electricity:

Locate the emergency power-off switch in the room in which you are working. Then, if an electrical accident occurs, you can quickly shut the power off.

Disconnect all power before installing or removing a Cisco ICS 7750 chassis.

Do not work alone if potentially hazardous conditions exist.

Never assume that power is disconnected from a circuit. Always check.

Look carefully for possible hazards in your work area, such as moist floors, ungrounded power extension cables, and missing safety grounds.

If an electrical accident occurs, proceed as follows:

Use caution; do not become a victim yourself.

Turn off power to the chassis.

If possible, send another person to get medical aid. Otherwise, determine the condition of the victim, and then call for help.

Determine whether the victim needs rescue breathing or external cardiac compressions; then take appropriate action.

More Than One Power Supply Warning

Warning This unit might have more than one power supply connection. All connections need to be removed to de-energize the unit.

Telephone Wiring Guidelines

Follow these guidelines when working with any equipment that is connected to telephone wiring or to other network cabling:

Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.

Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the jack is specifically designed for wet locations.

Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line has been disconnected at the network interface.

Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.

Lifting and Reaching Safety Precautions

Follow these guidelines when lifting or moving the chassis:


Warning To prevent personal injury or damage to the chassis, never attempt to lift or tilt the chassis using the handles on modules (such as power supplies, fans, or cards); these types of handles are not designed to support the weight of the unit. Lift the unit only by using handles that are an integral part of the chassis, or by grasping the chassis underneath its lower edge.



Warning Two people are required to lift the chassis. To prevent injury, keep your back straight and lift with your legs, not your back.


System Component Identification

Figure 1 shows the major components in a typical Cisco ICS 7750:

Slots 1 through 6 can contain a combination of SPEs, ASIs, and MRPs.

Slot 7 must contain only an SSP.

Slot 8 must contain only an SAP.

The Power Supply 1 and Power Supply 2 slots can each contain a power supply module (only one power supply module is required to operate the system).

The system contains one fan tray, at the bottom of the chassis.


Note By factory-installed default, the Cisco ICS 7750 chassis comes with the SPE running System Manager installed in slot 6, and with SPEs populated from right to left. Other system cards (such as MRPs and ASIs) are populated from left to right in the chassis.

Warning When performing the procedures in this section, wear grounding wrist straps to avoid ESD damage to the Cisco ICS 7750. Do not directly touch the backplane with your hand or any metal tool to prevent personal injury or equipment damage.



Warning Removing cards, fans, and power supply modules can expose you to high-energy (high-amperage) circuits and possible ejection of molten metal or to the shock hazard of telephony circuit voltages. Be sure to remove all rings, watches, and other jewelry from fingers, wrists, and arms before removing panels and devices.



Note If the chassis has any empty slots, they are covered with blank panels when the Cisco ICS 7750 is shipped to you. Do not remove the panel covering an empty slot until you are ready to install a card in the slot.



Note You do not have to disassemble any system component or remove the chassis from the rack to perform any of the procedures described in this section.


Best Practices for Hot Swapping

You can hot swap cards while the Cisco ICS 7750 is operating. With hot swapping, you do not need to power down the system. However, be sure to read and follow the best practices in this section and in the "Best Practices for Card Replacement" section, and the specific instructions for removing and replacing each type of card or module before you hot swap it.


Warning Only trained and qualified (IP Telephony certified for the Cisco ICS 7750) personnel should be allowed to install or replace this equipment.



Caution When replacing a hot-swappable system card, you do not need to power down the entire chassis by using the chassis power supply switch or by unplugging the power supply. Powering down the entire chassis may cause the Cisco ICS 7750 to lose important configuration data and will interrupt any applications or functions running on other cards in the chassis. (The one exception to this is an electrical accident, in which case turning off the power is recommended; see the "Safety with Electricity" section.)


Caution You can install only one SAP and one SSP in a single Cisco ICS 7750 chassis. If you must hot swap the SAP, the cooling fans do not operate; the system's ability to detect alarms associated with the operating environment, fans, and power supply modules is degraded; and applications using the COM ports on the SAP lose their access to those ports, until an operational SAP is properly reinserted in the chassis. If you must hot swap the SSP, the system loses LAN connectivity, and calls being made from or to Cisco IP phones that are switched through that SSP are disconnected until an operational SSP is properly reinserted in the chassis.


Note Depending on your system configuration, hot swapping of SPEs, ASIs, or MRPs can adversely affect users connected to the system. For example, if Cisco CallManager is running on only one SPE, hot swapping that SPE disconnects calls to or from the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and prevents the system from processing further PSTN traffic until an operational SPE is properly reinserted into the chassis. Similarly, hot swapping an ASI or MRP that is in the process of routing voice or WAN traffic prevents that traffic from reaching its destination. Contact your Cisco sales representative for guidelines on installing cards and software on your system for maximum availability and redundancy.

Consult these guidelines (and the instructions in "Best Practices for Hot Swapping") before resetting or removing cards:

Check card LEDs before attempting to reset or remove a card.

Do not press the SHTDN button on any card in the Cisco ICS 7750 chassis unless you are directed to do so.


Caution Always use the extractor levers to disengage cards from the chassis. Failure to use the levers can cause system error messages that indicate a card failure. However, do not use the extractor levers to lift or support the weight of the cards.

Best Practices for Inspecting the Chassis Backplane and Card Connectors Before Installing Cards

Before you install a card, perform the following inspections:

Inspect the backplane for bent pins (see Figure 2) or bent dividers between rows.

If the backplane has bent pins, do not install a card in that slot. Installing a card into a damaged backplane slot will damage the connector on the card.

Inspect the card for damaged holes on the connector (see Figure 3).

If the connector has damaged holes, do not install the card. Installing a card that has a damaged connector will damage the backplane. Return damaged cards to Cisco (see the "RMA Return Instructions" section).

Best Practices for Installing Cards

When installing cards, consult these guidelines, and follow the card-specific instructions:

Do not force the card faceplate into its slot. This action can damage the pins on the backplane if they are not aligned properly with the module or card.

Before installing a card, be sure to align its top and bottom edges with the upper and lower card guides in the chassis slot. Do not attempt to push the card into its slot until its top and bottom edges are in proper alignment.

When installing a card, carefully slide it all the way into the slot, and press both extractor levers inward (toward the center of the card) as far as they will go. The front of the card should now be flush with the other cards in the chassis. Using this method ensures that the card connector correctly mates with the backplane. For more information and an illustration on installing a card, see the "Installing an SPE" section.

If the card is particularly tight in its slot, or if the extractor lever engagement hooks are not engaging with the chassis, you might need to take the card out and insert it again to cause its extractor levers to engage properly.


Caution Do not push the card with so much force that it bends in the middle, since bending a card might force its sensitive electronic components to come in contact with adjacent cards.

The card or module should be firmly seated in the slot. Any card or module that is only partially connected to the backplane can disrupt system operation.

After card installation is complete, always use the lock-down screws (at the top and bottom of the card) to secure the card firmly in place in the chassis. If the screws do not engage, the extractor levers are not properly aligned, and the card is not firmly seated in the chassis. Remove and reinsert the card until you can fully tighten the screws.

Removing and Replacing SPE310s

Accessing the SPE310

You can access the SPE310 Windows interface to determine whether the SPE is running ICS System Software or ICS Core Software. The SPE310 Windows interface can be accessed in either of the following ways:

Accessing the SPE310 Windows Interface Through Terminal Services Client

Accessing the SPE310 Windows Interface Through Directly Connected Peripherals

Refer to Chapter 5, "Operating the Cisco ICS 7750," in the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide for more information on accessing the SPE310 Windows interface through Terminal Services Client or through directly connected peripherals.

Accessing the SPE310 Windows Interface Through Terminal Services Client

To access the SPE310 Windows interface through Terminal Services Client, follow these steps:


Step 1 On the PC that you use to administer the Cisco ICS 7750, choose Start > Programs > Terminal Services Client > Client Connection Manager.

Step 2 Use the Client Connection Manager to open a Terminal Services connection with the target SPE:

If you already have a Terminal Services Client connection defined for the target SPE, choose it, and choose File > Connect.

If you do not have a Terminal Services Client connection defined for the target SPE, choose File > New Connection, and follow the instructions in the wizard, and then choose File > Connect.

The Terminal Services Client window opens. You can use Terminal Services Client to access standard Windows utilities on the SPE310, such as Windows Explorer and the Control Panel.



Note You cannot perform a full installation of ICS System Manager (including Microsoft SQL server software) over Terminal Services Client. You must access the SPE310 through directly connected peripherals to install ICS System Manager. You can install ICS Core Software over Terminal Services Client.


Accessing the SPE310 Windows Interface Through Directly Connected Peripherals

You can connect a monitor, keyboard, and mouse directly to the SPE310 to access the Windows user interface, as follows:


Step 1 Connect the monitor cable to the video port on the SPE310, and power on the monitor.

Step 2 Do one of the following, based on the type of peripherals that you are using:

USB—Connect a USB keyboard to one SPE310 USB port, and connect a USB mouse to the other SPE310 USB port.

PS/2—Connect the "Y" splitter cable for your keyboard and mouse to the keyboard/mouse port on the target SPE310. Then connect your keyboard and mouse to the available ends of the "Y" splitter cable.


Note If you are using the "Y" splitter cable to connect a PS/2 mouse and a keyboard to the SPE310, the keyboard and mouse must be connected at or before the time that the SPE310 is rebooted in order to be recognized by the operating system. A USB keyboard and mouse are usually recognized without rebooting the operating system.



Note For a summary of the issues related to the connection of peripherals to SPE310s, as well as best practices for using peripherals with SPE310s, refer to the "Using Peripherals with SPE310s" section in Chapter 5, "Operating the Cisco ICS 7750," in the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide.



Installing Microsoft Terminal Services Client

If Microsoft Terminal Services Client is not installed on your PC, complete the following steps:


Step 1 Open Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Step 2 In the Location or Address field, enter the following URL:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/TSAC/tsmsi.asp

Step 3 Follow the instructions to download and install Microsoft Terminal Services Client.


Determining the Function of an SPE

Follow these steps to use ICS System Manager to determine whether the SPE installed in the chassis is running ICS Core Software or ICS System Manager software:


Step 1 On a PC connected to the ICS 7750 or on the SPE running System Manager, launch a web browser, and access ICS System Manager by entering the following in the address field:

http://SPE IP address/ics

where SPE IP address is the IP address of the SPE running System Manager.

The ICS System Manager screen appears in the browser window, and you are prompted for a user ID and password.

Step 2 In the User ID field, enter admin.

Step 3 In the Password field, enter the ICS super admin password (set during ICSConfig).

Step 4 Click Login.

Step 5 Examine the displays provided in ICS System Manager to determine the function of each card in the chassis. For example:

ICS System Manager: V3.2.8

or

ICS Core Software: V3.2.8

Step 6 Exit ICS System Manager when you have finished.


Removing an SPE

This section explains how to remove SPEs. Figure 4 shows how to remove a card.

You do not have to turn off the power for these procedures.


Caution When replacing an SPE, do not power down the entire chassis by using the chassis power supply switch or by unplugging the power supply. Powering down the entire chassis may cause the Cisco ICS 7750 to lose important configuration data and will interrupt any applications or functions running on other cards in the chassis.


Note Powering down an SPE will interrupt any services or applications running on that SPE. Measures should be taken to minimize impact on users.



Note If you have a chassis with more than one SPE installed and if you are not certain which SPE is running System Manager and which card or cards are running other applications, you can use ICS System Manager to check. See the "Determining the Function of an SPE" section.


Complete the following steps to remove an SPE:


Step 1 Press the SHTDN button on the card that you want to remove.


Note If the SPE to be removed is already shut down, this step is unnecessary, and you can proceed to Step 2.


The STATUS LED on the card starts blinking; after several minutes, it turns off. Wait for the STATUS LED to turn off before continuing.

Step 2 Put on an ESD-preventive wrist strap, and attach it to an unpainted chassis surface.


Caution To prevent ESD damage, handle cards by the edges only, and use an ESD-preventive wrist strap or other grounding device.

Step 3 For the SPE that you wish to remove, completely loosen the lock-down screws (at the top and bottom of the card).

Step 4 Press the upper and lower extractor levers outward (away from the center of the card) at the same time to disengage the card from the backplane. Pull the card out only far enough (about 1 inch) to disengage from the backplane; do not completely remove the card from the chassis.


Caution Always use the extractor levers to disengage or seat cards. Failure to use the levers can cause system error messages that indicate a card failure. Do not use the extractor levers to lift or support the weight of the cards.


Note Unseating or removal of the SPE should be done only when the SPE has been safely shut down. In normal use, you should not unseat or remove an SPE without first ensuring that the SPE has been shut down.



Warning High performance devices on system cards can get hot during operation. To remove a card, hold it by the faceplate and bottom edge. Allow the card to cool before touching any other part of it or placing it an anti-static bag.


Step 5 Grasp the extractor levers, and gently pull the card partially out of the chassis slot until you can grasp the card front panel with one hand. Place your other hand under the card to balance the weight of the card as you prepare to pull it out of the slot.

Step 6 Pull the card straight out of the slot. Avoid touching the circuitry or any connector pins.

Step 7 Place the card on an antistatic mat or foam pad until you are ready to reinstall it in the chassis. If you plan to return the card to the factory, place it inside an antistatic bag, and see the "RMA Return Instructions" section.

Step 8 Repeat Step 1 through Step 7 as needed to remove additional SPEs.


Installing an SPE

This section explains how to install SPEs. Figure 5 shows how to install a card.

You do not need to power down the entire chassis for these procedures.


Caution When installing cards, be sure to apply equal amounts of pressure to the top and bottom of the card. You can damage the card and the chassis backplane if you apply too much pressure to either the top or the bottom of the card.

Follow these steps to install an SPE:


Step 1 Put on an ESD-preventive wrist strap, and attach it to an unpainted chassis surface.


Caution To prevent ESD damage, handle cards by the edges only, and use an ESD-preventive wrist strap or other grounding device.

Step 2 Align the SPE with the upper and lower card guides in an available chassis slot, and make sure that the extractor levers are in the open position (pointing up and down).

Step 3 With the top and bottom edges of the card in the card guides, gently slide the card into the chassis until you feel resistance. Because there are grounding clips near the front and rear of the card guides, you might need to increase the amount of force that you use to get the card past the grounding clips. If you encounter extreme resistance, pull the card out slightly and push it back in again.

Step 4 Press the upper and lower extractor levers inward (toward the center of the card) at the same time until they lock into their slots. This step firmly seats the SPE into the chassis.

Step 5 Fasten the lock-down screws for the SPE, securing it in the chassis.

Step 6 Verify the installation (see the "Verifying SPE Installation" section).


Verifying SPE Installation

This section explains how to verify an SPE installation.

To verify that the SPE is operating correctly, check that its STATUS LED is functioning as follows:

The STATUS LED blinks green when the power-on self-test (POST) is in process or the card is shutting down.

The STATUS LED is green when the POST is complete, card initialization is complete, and the card is operating correctly.

The STATUS LED is off when the shutdown process is complete (indicates that the card can be removed from the chassis or that power is off for the entire Cisco ICS 7750).


Note The ALARM LED on Cisco ICS 7750 cards turns yellow during the POST. If the ALARM LED on any card does not turn off upon completion of the POST, that card is not functioning correctly. For general information on solving problems with cards, refer to Chapter 3, "Solving Hardware Problems," in the Cisco ICS 7750 Troubleshooting Guide.


Configuring a New or Replacement SPE

This section provides the procedures for configuring a new or replacement SPE after the SPE is installed. This section contains the following subsections:

SPE Installation and Replacement Scenarios

This section describes the scenarios in which SPE installation and/or replacement might be required:

Installing a new SPE for applications—In this instance, you already have a functioning SPE running System Manager in the Cisco ICS 7750 chassis, and you might have one or more existing SPEs for applications. The goal, as identified in this scenario, is to add another SPE and set it up so that it can have applications installed on it. (See the "Installing a New SPE for Applications" section.)

Replacing an existing SPE for applications—In this case, you have an SPE for applications already installed in the chassis, but you wish to replace this SPE with a new one. Here, you might also want to migrate saved configuration data and settings to the new SPE once it is in place and operational. (This scenario includes the assumption that a successful backup was completed for the previously installed applications.) In this scenario, the existing SPE running System Manager and any other installed SPEs are left intact and unchanged. (See the "Replacing an Existing SPE for Applications" section.)

Replacing the SPE running System Manager—This is a more complex scenario, and it requires the greatest number of steps to complete. In addition, although adding or replacing an SPE for applications can be done while the chassis is running, with minimal impact on users and services, replacing the SPE running System Manager takes more time and might require temporary interruption of services. For this reason, replacing the SPE running System Manager is best done at a time when interruption of service will have minimal impact, such as during scheduled maintenance. (See the "Replacing the SPE Running System Manager" section.)


Note Because there can be only one SPE running System Manager in a chassis, system software and any application data must be backed up (if possible) before removing the original SPE running System Manager.


The following sections will address each of these scenarios. You need to follow only the instructions in the scenario that applies to your situation.


Note The procedures and steps for installing specific applications (such as Cisco CallManager) are beyond the scope of this document. For information on how to install, configure, back up, and restore Cisco ICS 7750-compatible applications, refer to the user documentation for those applications. If you still need assistance, see the "Obtaining Technical Assistance" section.



Note To reduce chances for error and other conditions which could result in lengthy interruption of Cisco ICS 7750 services, it is recommended that you attempt to install or replace only one SPE in a chassis at a time. If you need to perform this operation for more than one SPE in a chassis, complete the entire installation or replacement process for a single SPE, and verify that is functioning properly, before installing or replacing the next SPE. In such a situation, always replace the SPE running System Manager first (if it is one of the SPEs that need to be replaced).


Installing a New SPE for Applications

The procedures in this section apply to installing a new additional SPE in a Cisco ICS 7750 chassis. This assumes that the new additional SPE was shipped from Manufacturing, and as such, has the applicable ICS software installed. These procedures do not apply to replacing an existing SPE for applications or to replacing the SPE running System Manager.


Note To replace an existing SPE for applications, see the "Replacing an Existing SPE for Applications" section. To replace the SPE running System Manager, see the "Replacing the SPE Running System Manager" section.


To install the new SPE for use as an additional SPE that runs applications, insert the SPE into an empty slot in the Cisco ICS 7750 chassis, following the instructions detailed in the "Installing an SPE" section.


Note After you install the SPE in the chassis, wait several minutes before you begin configuring the new SPE, so that the Windows 2000 operating system can finish booting. If you start ICSConfig before Windows 2000 is running, the new SPE will not be discovered, resulting in an error condition.


After you have installed the new SPE into the chassis, you can proceed to the "Using ICSConfig to Configure the New SPE for Applications" section.

If you wish to install applications on the SPE, see the "Installing Applications" section.

Using ICSConfig to Configure the New SPE for Applications

To configure the new SPE for applications, follow these steps:


Step 1 On a PC with network connectivity to the Cisco ICS 7750 or on the SPE running System Manager, launch a web browser.

Step 2 Enter the following URL:

http://SPE IP address/icsconfig/

where SPE IP address is the IP address of the SPE running System Manager.

Step 3 Log in as administrator, using the user ID administrator and the current password (the default is changeme).

Step 4 Click ICS 7700 System Setup.

Step 5 Make any necessary changes to the configuration screens. (Refer to the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide for instructions.) Make a note of the IP address of the new SPE. Go to Step 6 to see the changes.

Step 6 When you have configured the necessary settings, the Summary page displays a list of all the configuration pages and the data entered in each field.

All of the page names listed on the Summary page are links to the configuration pages, where you can change any information that you entered. To change any of the settings, click the associated hyperlinked page. When the settings are correct, click Next to continue to the Ready to Submit page.


Note The Ready to Submit page provides instructions on what to do after you submit the changes to the Cisco ICS 7750. Submitting and processing these changes can require up to 20 minutes.


Step 7 Click Submit.


Caution After clicking Submit, do not reboot your Cisco ICS 7750 or perform any configuration tasks on the Cisco ICS 7750 until this process has completed.

Step 8 Verify that the SPE is functioning correctly (see the "Verifying Card Installation" section).


After you have installed and configured the SPE, you can continue with the "Installing Applications" section.

Installing Applications

For information on how to install and configure applications on the newly installed SPE, refer to the documentation for the applications.


Caution If you are upgrading system software on an SPE running Cisco Unity, you may need to manually stop some of the services that are running on the Cisco Unity SPE before you can perform the upgrade. Refer to the Release Notes for System Software Release 2.4.0 on the Cisco ICS 7750 for detailed steps to follow to complete the Cisco Unity upgrade.

Replacing an Existing SPE for Applications

The procedures described in this section apply to replacing (or swapping) an existing SPE that is running applications only (not the SPE running System Manager). In this scenario, you remove an SPE for applications and replace it with a new SPE intended to perform the same functions as the previous SPE.


Note To install an additional SPE for applications, see the "Installing a New SPE for Applications" section. To replace the SPE running System Manager, see the "Replacing the SPE Running System Manager" section.


To replace an SPE for running applications that is already installed in an ICS 7750 chassis, you need to complete the following in order:

1. Back up configuration data and settings for the original SPE for applications (if application backup functions are available). See the "Backing Up Application Software Data" section.

2. Shut down and remove the SPE that is to be replaced. See the "Shutting Down and Removing the SPE for Applications" section.

3. Insert and power up the new SPE in the same or a different chassis slot. See the "Installing the Replacement SPE for Applications" section.

4. Set the correct date, time, and host name for the SPE. See the "Setting the Date, Time, and Host Name on the Replacement SPE" section.

5. Use ICSConfig to configure the SPE. See the "Using ICSConfig to Configure the Replacement SPE for Applications" section.

6. Install applications and restore application configuration data and settings (if available). See the "Installing Applications" section.

The following sections describe the process in detail.

Backing Up Application Software Data

For information on how to back up application data on an existing SPE, refer to the documentation for each application. Note that not all applications have built-in backup and restore features; in those cases, you need to back up and restore the application data manually.

If you do plan to restore backed up application data, you should also record the IP address and host name of the SPE being replaced. Later, during the configuration phase of setting up the SPE for applications, you will be directed to rename the SPE to match the host name of the card you removed.

To locate the SPE host name, follow these steps:


Step 1 Connect a monitor cable to the video port on the SPE 310, and power on the monitor.

Step 2 Do one of the following, based on the type of peripherals you are using:

USB—Connect a USB keyboard to one SPE USB port, and connect a USB mouse to the other SPE USB port.

PS/2—Connect the "Y" splitter cable for your keyboard and mouse to the keyboard/mouse port on the target SPE, and then connect your keyboard and mouse to the available ends of the "Y" splitter cable.


Note If you are using the "Y" splitter cable to connect a PS/2 mouse and a keyboard to the SPE, the keyboard and mouse must be connected at or before the time that the SPE is restarted in order to be recognized by the operating system. This is not the case with a USB keyboard and mouse, which typically are recognized without restarting the operating system.



Note For a list of USB peripherals that have been tested on the Cisco ICS 7750, refer to the "Connecting a Monitor, Keyboard, and Mouse to the SPE Card" section in the
Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide.


Step 3 Log in as an administrator (user ID administrator), and enter your password (the default is changeme).

Step 4 On the SPE, use either the Command Prompt (DOS) window or the Windows System Properties dialog box to find the host name. To use the Command Prompt window, go to Step 5. To use the System Properties dialog box, go to Step 7.

Step 5 Choose Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.

Step 6 Enter the hostname command. The SPE host name appears. Record the host name and skip the rest of this procedure.

Step 7 Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel > System.

Step 8 In the System Properties dialog box, under the Network Identification tab, click Properties.

Step 9 In the Identification Changes dialog box, the Computer Name field displays the host name. Record this information.

Step 10 Click Cancel to close the Identification Changes dialog box, and close the System Properties dialog box.


After you have recorded the SPE host name and backed up the application software data, you can continue with the "Shutting Down and Removing the SPE for Applications" section.

Shutting Down and Removing the SPE for Applications

To shut down and remove the old SPE, follow the instructions detailed in the "Removing an SPE" section.

After you have removed the old SPE for running applications, you can continue with the "Installing the Replacement SPE for Applications" section.

Installing the Replacement SPE for Applications

To install the replacement SPE for applications, insert the SPE into the same chassis slot from which you removed the old SPE for applications. Follow the instructions in the "Installing an SPE" section.

After you have installed the SPE in the chassis, you can continue with the "Setting the Date, Time, and Host Name on the Replacement SPE" section.


Note If the slot for the replacement SPE is not the original slot from which you removed the SPE, and if a COM port was assigned for that SPE, you must reconfigure the COM ports (using ICS System Manager) to map the SPE to the new location. ICS System Manager does not automatically track this change. For information on how to reconfigure the COM port assignment, refer to the ICS System Manager online help.


Setting the Date, Time, and Host Name on the Replacement SPE

If you have backed up application software data that can be restored only to an SPE having the same host name, use the following procedure to change the host name. (This is the case, for instance, with Cisco CallManager backups.)

To set the correct date and time and to change the host name on the SPE, follow these steps:


Step 1 Connect your peripherals as described in the "Backing Up Application Software Data" section.

Step 2 Log in as an administrator (user ID administrator), and enter your password (the default is changeme).

Step 3 Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel > Date/Time.

Step 4 In the Date/Time Properties window, set the correct date and time in the Date & Time tab, and set the appropriate time zone in the Time Zone tab. Click OK to accept the changes.

Step 5 If you have backed up application data that can be restored only to an SPE by using the same host name, proceed to the next step. If no host name change is required, skip the remaining steps, and continue with the "Using ICSConfig to Configure the Replacement SPE for Applications" section.

Step 6 In the Control Panel, double-click System to open System Properties.

Step 7 In the System Properties dialog box, under the Network Identification tab, click Properties.

Step 8 In the Identification Changes dialog box, in the Computer Name field, enter the host name (maximum of 15 characters) you originally had for the SPE you removed, and click OK.

Step 9 Click OK to close the System Properties dialog box.

Step 10 You are prompted to reboot the system. Click OK to reboot the SPE, implementing the host name change.


After you have completed the SPE host name change, continue with the "Using ICSConfig to Configure the Replacement SPE for Applications" section.

Using ICSConfig to Configure the Replacement SPE for Applications

To configure the SPE, using ICSConfig, complete the following steps:


Step 1 On a PC connected to the Cisco ICS 7750 or on the SPE running System Manager, launch a web browser.

Step 2 Enter the following URL:

http://SPE IP address/icsconfig/

where the address entered is the IP address of the SPE running System Manager.

Step 3 Log in as administrator (using the user ID administrator and the default password changeme).

Step 4 Click ICS 7700 System Setup.

Step 5 Make any necessary changes to the configuration screens, ensuring that the new SPE has the same IP address as the IP address of the SPE that was replaced. Refer to the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide for instructions. Go to Step 6 to see changes made to the configuration.

Step 6 When you have configured the necessary settings, the Summary page displays a list of all the configuration pages and the data entered in each field.

All the page names listed on the Summary page are links to the configuration pages, where you can change any information that you entered. To change any of the settings, click the associated hyperlinked page. When all the settings are correct, click Next to continue to the Ready to Submit page.


Note The Ready to Submit page provides instructions on what to do after you submit the changes to your Cisco ICS 7750. Submitting and processing these changes can take up to 20 minutes to complete.


Step 7 Click Submit.


Caution After clicking Submit, do not reboot your Cisco ICS 7750 or perform any configuration tasks on the system during this process.

Step 8 Verify that the SPE is functioning correctly (see the "Verifying Card Installation" section).


After the SPE is installed and configured, you can proceed to the "Installing Applications and Restoring Saved Application Data" section.

Installing Applications and Restoring Saved Application Data

For information on how to install and configure applications on the newly installed SPE, refer to the documentation for the applications. Similarly, for details on how to restore saved or backed-up application data, where such functions are available, see the application documentation.


Caution If you are upgrading system software on an SPE running Cisco Unity, you may need to manually stop some of the services that are running on the Cisco Unity SPE before you can perform the upgrade. Refer to the Release Notes for System Software Release 2.4.0 on the Cisco ICS 7750 for detailed steps to follow to complete the Cisco Unity upgrade.

Replacing the SPE Running System Manager

In this scenario, you replace the SPE running System Manager with a new SPE.


Note The Cisco ICS 7750 supports the operation of only one SPE running System Manager in a chassis. For this reason, the process requires that you back up system software and any application data on the original SPE running System Manager before you install and restore data to the new SPE.



Note The Cisco ICS 7750 services will be interrupted briefly during this process. It is therefore recommended that you replace the SPE running System Manager at a time when impact to users will be minimized, such as during scheduled maintenance or outside normal business hours.


Perform the following procedures, in order, to replace the SPE running System Manager:

1. Back up system data on the original SPE running System Manager. See the "Backing Up System Software Data" section.

2. If there are any applications installed on the SPE that support backup functionality, back up the application data and settings. See the "Backing Up Application Data" section.

3. Shut down and remove the original SPE to be replaced. See the "Shutting Down and Removing the SPE Running System Manager" section.

4. Insert the SPE into the same (now empty) chassis slot from which you removed the original SPE running System Manager. See the "Installing an SPE" section.

5. Remove the factory-installed ICS Core Software and install the ICS System Manager Software. See the "Converting the ICS Core Software to ICS System Manager Software" section.

6. Use ICSConfig to configure or verify the settings of the new ICS System Manager. See the "Using ICSConfig to Configure and Verify the SPE Running System Manager" section.

7. Access ICS System Manager, and restore the functionality of the system. See the "Accessing ICS System Manager and Restoring Cisco ICS 7750 Functionality" section.

8. (Optional) Install applications, and restore application configuration data and settings (if available). See the "Installing Applications and Restoring Saved Application Software Data" section.


The following sections describe the process in detail.

Backing Up System Software Data

Before replacing the SPE running System Manager, you should always create a backup of the system software configuration, if possible. This system backup will include SPE registry settings, ICS System Manager database records, and IOS configuration files for ASIs and MRPs.

If you do not have a valid backup, you will need to configure the new SPE running System Manager as if it were a new Cisco ICS 7750 chassis installation, a process which takes a considerably longer time to complete. See the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide for information and procedures on how to do this.

For instructions on how to back up system software data, refer to the "Backing Up System Data" section in Chapter 5, "Operating the Cisco ICS 7750," in the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide. Be sure to back up to a hard disk location other than on the SPE that you are removing, and make sure that there is enough disk space for the backup (approximately 75 MB).


Caution Before you back up system data, make sure that no two devices (such as Cisco IP phones) are assigned the same IP address. If any two devices are using the same IP address, you might experience problems if you later attempt to restore from this backup.


Note COM port assignment information is not stored in the ICS System Manager database and is not included when you perform a backup. You may need to reconfigure the COM port assignment after you restore the ICS System Manager data.


You should also record the host name for the SPE running System Manager that is being replaced. Later, during the configuration phase of setting up the new SPE, you will be directed to rename the SPE to match the host name of the card you removed.

To locate the SPE host name, follow these steps:


Step 1 Connect your peripherals as described in the "Backing Up Application Software Data" section.

Step 2 Log in as an administrator (user ID administrator), and enter your password (the default is changeme).

Step 3 On the SPE, use either the Command Prompt (DOS) window or the Windows System Properties dialog box to find the host name. To use the Command Prompt window, go to Step 4. To use the System Properties dialog box, go to Step 6.

Step 4 To open the Command Prompt window, choose Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.

Step 5 Enter the hostname command. The SPE host name appears. Record the host name, and skip the rest of this procedure.

Step 6 To access the System Properties dialog box, choose Start > Settings > Control Panel > System.

Step 7 In the System Properties dialog box, under the Network Identification tab, click Properties.

Step 8 In the Identification Changes dialog box, the Computer Name field displays the host name. Record this information.

Step 9 Click Cancel to close the Identification Changes dialog box, and close the System Properties dialog box.


Backing Up Application Data

Backing up applications that may have been installed on the SPE running System Manager is a separate, secondary operation. For information on how to back up application data on an existing SPE, refer to the documentation for each application. When applications do not have backup and restore features, you will need to back up and restore the application data manually.

After you have backed up the system, you can continue with the "Shutting Down and Removing the SPE Running System Manager" section.

Shutting Down and Removing the SPE Running System Manager

To shut down and remove the old SPE running System Manager, follow the instructions detailed in the "Removing an SPE" section.

After shutting down and removing the original SPE running System Manager, continue with "Installing the Replacement SPE Running System Manager" section.

Installing the Replacement SPE Running System Manager

To install the replacement SPE running System Manager, insert the SPE into the same (now empty) chassis slot from which you removed the original SPE running System Manager. To do this, follow the instructions in the "Installing an SPE" section.

After the SPE has been installed in the chassis, go to the "Converting the ICS Core Software to ICS System Manager Software" section.


Note If the slot for the replacement SPE is different from the original slot from which you removed the SPE, and if there was a COM port assigned for that SPE, you must reconfigure the COM ports (using ICS System Manager) to map the SPE to the new location. ICS System Manager does not automatically track this change. For information on how to reconfigure the COM port assignment, refer to the ICS System Manager online help.


Converting the ICS Core Software to ICS System Manager Software

Follow these steps to convert the ICS Core Software to ICS System Manager Software on the SPE.


Step 1 Access the SPE310 Windows user interface. Connect your peripherals as described in the "Accessing the SPE310 Windows Interface Through Directly Connected Peripherals" section.

Step 2 Log in as an administrator (user ID administrator), and enter the default password changeme. Do not change the default password.


Caution It is strongly recommended that you close all open programs before installing this software.

Step 3 On the target SPE, use Windows Explorer to navigate to c:\2.x.x\ICS_Full_2.x.x

where 2.x.x is the version of ICS System Software to be installed.

Step 4 Double-click the Setup.exe file in the directory.

The files are extracted to the target SPE. The Setup window appears, and displays a message that the system is being checked.


Note The conversion setup program must be run using the full ICS System Software installation package (CD or CCO version). Conversion is not available if you are using the upgrade-only package.



Note Because the conversion setup program installs Microsoft SQL Server, it must be run locally on the target SPE. The setup program cannot be run over a Terminal Services Client connection.


Step 5 In the Welcome window, click Next to continue the setup.

Step 6 In the Hostname field, in the Change Hostname window, enter the host name that you originally assigned to the SPE that you removed.

Changing the host name is subject to the following restrictions:

The host name must be unique to your network.

The host name must not be longer than 15 characters.

The host name cannot have a space anywhere in the host name, including leading or trailing spaces. The following characters and symbols are not valid entries in host names: \ " / [ ] : | < > + = ; , ?.


Note Because Microsoft SQL Server is installed on the SPE as part of the system software and later as part of the Cisco CallManager installation, it is best practice to change the SPE host name before installing system software. If you have already installed system software, you can still change the host name of an SPE running System Manager, but only if no applications (including Cisco CallManager) have been installed on the SPE. For detailed procedures on how to change the host name of an SPE running System Manager, refer to the "Changing the Host Name of the SPE310 Running System Manager" section in Chapter 5, "Operating the Cisco ICS 7750," in the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide. After any applications have been installed on the SPE, you cannot change the host name without first reimaging the SPE and restarting the SPE replacement process.


Step 7 Click Next.

Step 8 In the Date & Time window, change the date, time, and time zone for the SPE, if necessary. If daylight savings time is practiced in the selected time zone, you have the option of setting the SPE to automatically adjust the time for daylight savings time changes. Click Next.

Step 9 In the Select Upgrade Type window, click the Convert ICS Core Software to ICS System Manager Software radio button.

Step 10 Click Yes to continue with the setup installation.


Caution Do not install ICS System Manager on an SPE running Cisco Unity Voice Messaging.

The Confirmation window appears. In this window, you can review the installation details and confirm that they are correct.

Step 11 In the Confirmation window, click Next to confirm the installation details and to proceed with the installation.

Step 12 In the Setup window, click Next to install the ICS System Manager software package.


Note There must be one (and only one) SPE310 running ICS System Manager software in the chassis.


If you changed the host name of the SPE as described in Step 6, the SPE will restart.

After the SPE has restarted, the Setup Status window displays an installation task list.

During the Windows 2000 setup, the ICS System Software setup program checks for the installation of hotfixes. If any applicable hotfixes have not been installed on the system, the ICS System Software setup program will install the hotfixes and restart the SPE. Setup will then continue to install the remaining tasks.

Upon completion, the Setup window displays a message about the IOS images being imported into the software image library.

Step 13 In the Setup Status window, installation information and information about the location of log files are displayed. Click Next.

Step 14 In the Instructions window, click Finish to complete the ICS System Software setup.

ICSConfig launches automatically. The Cisco ICS 7700 System Manager Initial Setup window appears, containing the Cisco End User License Agreement.

Step 15 Read the Cisco End User License Agreement. Click I Accept.

Step 16 Click Continue.

Discovery of the system cards begins. You can monitor the progress by watching the percentage display at the top status bar on the attached monitor. When the card discovery process is finished, the ICS System Manager Initial Setup window appears.

Step 17 In the Initial Setup window, click OK to continue.

The ICS Replacement SPE setup window appears.

Step 18 In the ICS Replacement SPE setup window, assign the IP addresses for the system cards and external devices, such as phones and PCs. For more information on using ICSConfig, refer to the ICSConfig online help and the "Launching the Configuration Program" section in Chapter 4, "Completing the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation," in the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide.


Note If you are installing a new SPE in the chassis, use an IP address not already assigned to another card in the chassis.


Use the system default (changeme) for all passwords unless you have previously changed the password. To move back and forth between the different configuration pages of ICSConfig, click the Back and Next buttons.

Step 19 After you have made all the changes, click Submit to deliver the values entered to the system.

The Replacement SPE window displays a message that the system configuration delivery is complete.

Step 20 Use one of the following options to configure the system:

To access ICSConfig to configure the system, double-click the URL shown in the Replacement SPE window.

To restore backed up System Manager data and settings, double-click the URL shown in the Replacement SPE window to view the procedures, or refer to the "Restoring System Data to the SPE310 Running System Manager" section in Chapter 8, "Maintaining the Cisco ICS 7750," in the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide.


Note At the end of the restore process, you will be instructed to seat all the MRPs and ASIs. It can take up to 4 minutes per card to configure each MRP200, ASI81, or ASI160 and for TFTP to execute fully when first booting these cards in a chassis with a new SPE running System Manager. The Flash-based MRP cards (MRP300, MRP3-8FXS, and MRP3-16FXS) may boot in less time.



Note At this point, any SPEs for applications (with the ICS Core Software installed) that may have been unseated should be seated as well.


Step 21 Perform the necessary Cisco IOS configuration for each MRP or ASI in the chassis. For more information, refer to Chapter 6, "Configuring the Cisco ICS 7750," in the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide.


After the SPE running System Manager has been configured and the system software has been restored (assuming that a system software backup is available), continue with the "Using ICSConfig to Configure and Verify the SPE Running System Manager" section. If you are using an external PC, continue with the "Configuring Your PC IP Address" section.

Configuring Your PC IP Address

If you are using a PC connected to the ICS 7750 and the IP address or subnet of the SPE running System Manager was changed as part of the restore, change the IP address of the PC connected to the chassis to the match the IP subnet of the SPE. You can do this manually in Network Settings or, if your network supports it, by reenabling DHCP address resolution on the PC.

Follow these steps to change the IP address on the PC connected to the ICS 7750:


Step 1 On the PC Desktop, right-click Network Neighborhood (Windows NT) or My Network Places (Windows 2000).

Step 2 Choose Properties.

Step 3 Click the Protocols tab (Windows NT), or right-click Local Area Connection and choose Properties (Windows 2000).

Step 4 Choose TCP/IP Protocol (Windows NT) or Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) (Windows 2000).

Step 5 Click Properties.

Step 6 Click the Specify an IP address radio button (Windows NT) or the Use the following IP address radio button (Windows 2000).

Step 7 In the IP Address field, enter a unique (unused) IP address, such as 10.0.0.250. (By default, system cards are assigned IP addresses in the range beginning with 10.0.0.1 and ending with 10.0.0.127.)

This IP address must meet the following requirements:

It must be in the same subnet as the cards in the Cisco ICS 7750.

It must not fall within the range of contiguous IP addresses that you have reserved for the Cisco ICS 7750 cards.

Step 8 In the Subnet Mask field, enter 255.255.255.0.

Step 9 Click OK.

Step 10 If a message appears which indicates that your PC must be rebooted to apply the changes, click Yes.

For additional information, refer to Chapter 4, "Completing the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation," in the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide.

After the SPE running System Manager has been configured and the system software has been restored (assuming that a system software backup is available), continue with the "Using ICSConfig to Configure and Verify the SPE Running System Manager" section.

Configuring Your Web Browser for System Manager

ICSConfig is a web-browser-based configuration program. To use ICSConfig on the SPE running System Manager, configure your web browser as follows:


Note To access the Cisco ICS System Manager, your browser must be configured as described before you can use the System Manager. Netscape Communicator 4.7 and Internet Explorer 5.5 are the only supported browsers.


Netscape Communicator 4.7

If you are using Netscape Communicator 4.7 on a PC connected to the Cisco ICS 7750, follow these steps to configure it to work with System Manager:


Step 1 Open Netscape Communicator.

Step 2 Choose Edit > Preferences.

Step 3 In the Preferences window, click Advanced.

Step 4 Check the Enable Java, Enable JavaScript, and Enable Style Sheets check boxes.

Step 5 From the Advanced drop-down list, choose Cache.

Step 6 Under Document in Cache Is Compared to Document on Network, choose Every time.

Step 7 Click OK.


Internet Explorer 5.5

If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 on a PC connected to the Cisco ICS 7750, or on the SPE running System Manager, follow these steps to configure it to work with System Manager.


Note During the installation of this browser, check the Install Minimal or Customize Your Browser check box. In the Component Options window in the Internet Explorer 5 section, check the Microsoft Virtual Machine check box to display applets written in Java.



Step 1 Open Internet Explorer.

Step 2 Choose Tools > Internet Options.

Step 3 In the Internet Options window, click the Advanced tab.

a. Under Microsoft VM, check the Java logging enabled and JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled check boxes.

If you do not see this section, you need to reinstall the browser and follow the instructions in the note at the beginning of this section.

b. Click Apply.

Step 4 In the Internet Options window, click the General tab.

a. In the Temporary Internet Files section, click Settings.

b. In the Settings window, choose Every visit to the page, and click OK.

Step 5 In the Internet Options window, click the Security tab.

a. Click the Trusted Sites icon, and click Sites.

b. Uncheck the Require server verification check box.

c. Click OK.

Step 6 While still in the Security tab of the Internet Options window, click Custom Level.

a. In the Security Settings window, scroll to the Microsoft VM > Java permissions section.

If you do not see this section, you need to reinstall the browser and follow the instructions in the note at the beginning of this section.

b. Choose Custom to enable Java Custom Settings.

c. Click Java Custom Settings.

Step 7 In the Trusted Sites window, click the Edit Permissions tab.

a. Under Run Unsigned Content, choose Enable.

b. Click OK.

Step 8 In the Security Settings window, click OK.

Step 9 In the Internet Options window, click the Content tab.

a. In the Personal Information section, click AutoComplete.

b. In the Use AutoComplete For section, uncheck the User Names and Passwords on Forms check box.

c. Click OK.

Step 10 In the Internet Options window, click OK.

Using ICSConfig to Configure and Verify the SPE Running System Manager

In this next stage of the process, you will use ICSConfig to configure and verify correct operation of the SPE.

To configure the SPE with ICSConfig, complete the following steps:


Step 1 Properly reseat any cards in the chassis that were unseated, and connect any cables that were removed at the beginning of the replacement process.

Step 2 On a PC connected to the ICS 7750, or on the SPE running System Manager, launch a web browser.

Step 3 Enter the following URL:

http://SPE IP address/icsconfig/

where the address entered is the IP address of the SPE running System Manager.

Step 4 Log in as administrator (user ID administrator), and enter the password (the default is changeme).

Step 5 Click ICS 7700 System Setup.

Step 6 Make any necessary changes to the configuration screens. (Refer to the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide for instructions.)


Note If you have restored system software data, you do not need to make any changes here. Instead, scroll through the pages of ICSConfig to verify that the SPE is operating correctly and has the proper settings.


Step 7 When you have configured the necessary settings, the Summary page displays a list of all of the configuration pages and the data entered in each field.

All the page names listed on the Summary page are links to the configuration pages, where you can change any of the information that you entered. To change any of the settings, click the associated hyperlinked page. When all the settings are correct, click Next to continue to the Ready to Submit page.


Note The Ready to Submit page provides instructions on what to do after you submit the changes to your Cisco ICS 7750. Submitting and processing these changes can take up to 20 minutes. If you have not made any changes, you can stop and exit ICSConfig instead, and proceed to Step 9.


Step 8 Click Submit.


Caution After you click Submit, do not reboot your Cisco ICS 7750 or perform any configuration tasks on the Cisco ICS 7750 during this process.

Step 9 Verify that the SPE is functioning correctly (see the "Verifying Card Installation" section).


After the SPE is configured and verified, continue with the "Accessing ICS System Manager and Restoring Cisco ICS 7750 Functionality" section.

Accessing ICS System Manager and Restoring Cisco ICS 7750 Functionality

In this procedure, you will use ICS System Manager to monitor the chassis while you reseat any cards that were unseated at the beginning of the installation process and you connect any removed cables.

Perform the following steps:


Step 1 If the SPE running System Manager has had its IP address/subnet changed as part of the restoration or configuration process, and if you are using a PC connected to the ICS 7750, change the IP address of the PC connected to the chassis to the same IP subnet. You can do this manually in Network Settings or, if your network supports it, by reenabling DHCP address resolution on the PC. (See the "Configuring Your PC IP Address" section, for details on how to access and change the PC network settings.)

Step 2 On a PC connected to the ICS 7750, or on the SPE running System Manager, launch a web browser, and access ICS System Manager by entering the following in the address field:

http://SPE IP address/ics

where the SPE IP address entered is the IP address of the SPE running System Manager.

The System Manager screen appears in the browser, and you are prompted for a user ID and password.

Step 3 In the User ID field, enter admin. In the Password field, enter the ICS super admin password (set during ICSConfig). Click Login.

Step 4 Reseat any cards that were unseated at the beginning of the installation process. It will take several minutes for each card to boot and for TFTP to initialize fully. If no cards were unseated, go to Step 5.

Step 5 When you have finished and have verified that the cards in the chassis are up and running, exit ICS System Manager, and close the web browser window.

Step 6 Tighten the lock-down screws for all the cards in the Cisco ICS 7750 chassis.

Step 7 If disconnected, reconnect the Cisco ICS 7750 to its original LAN and WAN connections.

Step 8 Connect the cables to the MRPs and ASIs, if any were removed. (Refer to the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide.)



Note When first booting MRP200, ASI81, and ASI160 cards in a chassis with a newly installed SPE running System Manager, it can take up to 4 minutes per card to configure each MRP or ASI and for TFTP to execute fully. The Flash-based MRP cards (MRP300, MRP3-8FXS, and MRP3-16FXS) may boot in less time.



Note If there was no backup of ICS System Manager data, the MRPs and ASIs must be configured again by using the IOS command-line interface (CLI).


Continue with the "Installing Applications and Restoring Saved Application Software Data" section.

Installing Applications and Restoring Saved Application Software Data

After the SPE running System Manager is restored and operational, you can install application software on it, if you wish, and restore the saved application software data, if available.

For information on how to install and configure applications on the newly installed SPE, refer to the documentation for the applications. For information on how to restore saved or backed-up application data, where such functions are available, see the application documentation.

Downgrading ICS System Software

There may be instances in which you wish to replace the current installed version of the ICS System Software with an older (lower number) version. However, the ICS System Software Setup program does not support this option during its automatic Wizard-based installation.


Note ICS System Software release 2.4.0 was designed to provide enhanced functionality over prior releases. Beginning with release 2.4.0, ICS System Manager provides support for an automated installation wizard, new hardware (such as the Flash-based MRP cards) and updated IOS images for the SSP and MRPs. If you downgrade the system software on the ICS 7750 to a version prior to 2.4.0, you must use compatible hardware (non-Flash-based MRP cards) and software (ICS System Manager and the IOS images for the MRPs and SSP) included in that specific release's installation package.


To install an older version of the ICS System Software than is currently installed on an SPE, follow these steps:


Step 1 Locate the ICS System Software package to be installed on the SPE.


Note The version of ICS System Software that is installed on the SPE running System Manager should be equal to or higher than that running on the core software SPEs installed in the ICS 7750 chassis. Refer to the online help found in each ICS System Software package for guidelines on downgrading software.


Step 2 Connect a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, as described in Appendix C, "Using Peripherals with Cisco ICS 7750 SPEs."

Step 3 If you plan to install the ICS System Software from CD-ROM, connect the USB CD-ROM drive, as described in Appendix C, "Using Peripherals with Cisco ICS 7750 SPEs." Otherwise, if you are installing from a downloaded software package, you can skip to Step 4.

Step 4 On the SPE, use the Windows Control Panel to remove the existing ICS System Software.

Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Locate the ICS System Software in the installed software list, and click Change/Remove to uninstall it.

To uninstall ICS System Manager, select ICS System Manager V3.x.x


Note Microsoft SQL Server, Java Runtime Environment (JRE), service packs and hot fixes are not uninstalled.


To uninstall ICS Core Software, select ICS Core Software V3.x.x


Note Service packs and hot fixes are not uninstalled.


Follow the prompts to restart the system.


Note An uninstall log is created when ICS System Software is uninstalled. You can use this log to verify that you successfully uninstalled the system software. Refer to the "ICS System Manager Log Files" section in Chapter 5, "Troubleshooting ICS 7750 Software" in the Cisco ICS 7750 Troubleshooting Guide.


Step 5 Insert the installation CD in the CD-ROM drive, or locate the ICS System Software package on the SPE hard drive. Run Setup to install the software. For more details on how to do this, follow the procedure as outlined in the "ICS System Software Installation" section in Chapter 4, "Installing and Upgrading Cisco ICS 7750 System Software" in the Cisco ICS 7750 Troubleshooting Guide.


Removing and Replacing ASIs, MRPs, the SSP, or the SAP

This section contains the following procedures:

Removing an ASI, MRP, SSP, or SAP

Installing an ASI or MRP

Removing an ASI, MRP, SSP, or SAP

This section explains how to remove an ASI, MRP, SSP, or SAP. You do not have to turn off the power for these procedures.

Figure 6 depicts the process of removing a card from the Cisco ICS 7750 chassis.

Note Before removing the SSP from the chassis, you must stop the FMMServer service on the SPE running System Manager by using the net stop FMMServer command. If the FMMServer service is not stopped, ICS System Manager will not run properly when the SSP is reseated. See the "Stopping and Restarting the FMMServer (SSP Replacement Only)" section.


Complete the following steps to remove a system card:


Step 1 Press the SHTDN button on the card that you want to remove.

The STATUS LED on the card starts blinking. After several minutes, it will turn off. Wait for the STATUS LED to turn off before continuing.

Step 2 Put on an ESD-preventive wrist strap, and attach it to an unpainted chassis surface.


Caution To prevent ESD damage, handle cards by the edges only, and use an ESD-preventive wrist strap or other grounding device.

Step 3 Disconnect any cables attached to the front of the card, and secure them out of the way, using cable ties, if necessary.

Step 4 Completely loosen the lock-down screws (at the top and bottom of the card).

Step 5 Press the upper and lower extractor levers outward (away from the center of the card) at the same time to disengage the card from the backplane. Pull the card out only far enough (about 1 inch) to disengage it from the backplane; do not completely remove the card from the chassis.


Caution Always use the extractor levers to disengage or seat cards. Failure to use the levers can cause erroneous system error messages that indicate a card failure. Do not use the extractor levers to lift or support the weight of the cards.

Step 6 Grasp the extractor levers and gently pull the card partially out of the chassis slot until you can grasp the card front panel with one hand. Place your other hand under the card to balance the weight of the card as you prepare to pull it out of the slot.


Warning High performance devices on system cards can get hot during operation. To remove a card, hold it by the faceplate and bottom edge. Allow the card to cool before touching any other part of it or placing it an anti-static bag.


Step 7 Pull the card straight out of the slot. Avoid touching the circuitry or any connector pins.

Step 8 Place the card on an antistatic mat or foam pad until you are ready to reinstall it in the chassis. If you plan to return the card to the factory, place it in an antistatic bag, and see the "RMA Return Instructions" section.


To install a card, see the "Installing an ASI or MRP" section.

Stopping and Restarting the FMMServer (SSP Replacement Only)

Use the following procedure only if you are replacing an SSP.

To stop or restart the FMMServer service on the SPE running System Manager, follow these steps:


Step 1 If you are using a PC connected to the ICS 7750 and if it is not already directly connected to the SAP console port, connect the SAP console port to an available COM port on your PC. You can also perform this procedure on the SPE running System Manager.

Step 2 On a PC connected to the ICS 7750 or on the SPE running System Manager, open a terminal emulation application (such as HyperTerminal). On PCs running Windows 2000, a typical HyperTerminal path is Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > HyperTerminal.

Step 3 Choose File > New Connection.

Step 4 In the Connection Description dialog box, enter a name for the connection in the Name field, and select an icon to be associated with the connection. Click OK.

Step 5 In the Phone Number dialog box, click the drop-down arrow to view a list of choices for the Connect Using field. Choose the PC COM port that is connected to the SAP, and click OK.

Step 6 In the Properties dialog box, click the drop-down arrow to view a list of choices for the Bits per Second field, and choose 9600. Click OK. A terminal window opens.

Step 7 Press Ctrl-backslash (\).

A menu similar to the following is displayed:

A. System Alarm Processor
B. System Processing Engine

Step 8 Enter the number corresponding to the slot for the SPE running System Manager, and press Enter.

Step 9 Log in as an administrator (user ID administrator), and enter your password (the default is changeme).

Step 10 To restart the FMMServer services, go to Step 11. To stop the FMMServer services, enter the following command and skip Step 11:

net stop FMMServer

Step 11 To restart FMMServer services, enter the following command:

net start FMMServer


Installing an ASI or MRP

This section provides procedures for installing or replacing ASIs or MRPs.

You do not need to turn off power for these procedures. Figure 7 shows how to install system cards.


Caution When you are installing cards, be sure to apply equal amounts of pressure to the top and bottom of the card. You can damage the card and the chassis backplane if you apply too much pressure to either the bottom or the top of the card.

Installing or Replacing ASIs or MRPs


Note If you wish to install a VIC, WIC, or VWIC, do not completely seat the ASI81, MRP3-8FXS or MRP into the chassis at this time. See the "Removing and Replacing Interface Cards in ASI81s, MRP3-8FXSs, or MRPs" section for information about installing VICs, WICs, and VWICs.


Follow these steps to install an ASI or MRP:


Step 1 If you are using a PC connected to the ICS 7750, use a straight-through Ethernet cable to connect your PC Ethernet NIC to either of the 10/100 Ethernet ports (labeled 1x and 2x) on the SSP.

Step 2 Put on an ESD-preventive wrist strap, and attach it to an unpainted chassis surface.


Caution To prevent ESD damage, handle the cards only by the edges, and use an ESD-preventive wrist strap or other grounding device.


Note If you need to install or replace an interface card in an ASI81, MRP or MRP3-8FXS, see the "Installing or Replacing an Interface Card in an ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS" section.


Step 3 Align the ASI or MRP with the upper and lower card guides in an available chassis slot, and make sure that the extractor levers are in the open position (pointing up and down).

Step 4 With the top and bottom edges of the card in the card guides, gently slide the card into the chassis until you feel resistance. Because there are grounding clips near the front and rear of the card guides, you might need to increase the amount of force that you use to get the card past the grounding clips. If you encounter extreme resistance, pull the card out slightly, and then push it back in again.

Step 5 Press the upper and lower extractor levers inward (toward the center of the card) at the same time until they lock into their slots. This step firmly seats the ASI or MRP into the chassis.

Step 6 To configure the ASI or MRP, complete the following steps:

a. On a PC connected to the ICS 7750 or on the SPE running System Manager, launch a web browser.

b. Enter the following URL, using the IP address of the SPE running System Manager:

http://SPE IP address/icsconfig/

c. Log in as administrator (user ID administrator), default password changeme).

d. Click Login.

e. Click ICS 7700 System Setup.

f. Make any necessary changes to the configuration screens. (Refer to the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide for instructions.)

g. When you have configured the necessary settings, the Summary page displays a list of all of the configuration pages and the data entered in each field.

All the page names listed on the Summary page are links to the configuration pages, where you can change any of the information that you entered. To change any of the settings, click the associated hyperlinked page. When all the settings are correct, click Next to continue to the Ready to Submit page.


Note The Ready to Submit page provides instructions on what to do after you submit the changes to your Cisco ICS 7750. Submitting and processing these changes can take up to 20 minutes to complete.


h. Click Submit.


Caution After you click Submit, do not reboot your Cisco ICS 7750 or perform any configuration tasks on the Cisco ICS 7750 during this process.

Step 7 Verify that the ASI or MRP is correctly installed (see the "Verifying Card Installation" section).

Step 8 If you do not wish to install additional interface cards or power supply modules, secure the MRP (and any additional cards or power supply modules that you have installed) by completely tightening the captive screws at the top and bottom of the chassis slots.


Removing and Replacing Interface Cards in ASI81s, MRP3-8FXSs, or MRPs

You can install two WICs, VICs, or VWICs into the MRP, or you can install one WIC, VIC, or VWIC into the ASI81 or MRP3-8FXS. The MRP has two interface card slots (slot 0 and slot 1), whereas the ASI81 and MRP3-8FXS each have one interface slot (slot 1). For more information about these cards, refer to the "Processor Cards Feature Summary" chapter in the Cisco ICS 7750 System Description.

This section provides information on removing and replacing interface cards in ASI81s, MRP3-8FXSs, or MRPs.

Before You Begin

Before you install an interface card into an MRP, ASI81, or MRP3-8FXS, do the following:

Verify that the MRP, ASI81, or MRP3-8FXS card is installed with the minimum IOS release that supports the interface card you wish to install.

VICs and VWICs installed in MRP, ASI81, or MRP3-8FXS cards might require additional digital signal processors (DSPs) for processing heavier voice traffic. You can install up to two packet voice/data modules (PVDMs) on each MRP, ASI, or MRP3-8FXS card. PVDMs contain DSP chips that give MRP, ASI, and MRP3-8FXS cards more processing power. Before you can configure the digital voice ports, the PVDM must be installed on the MRP before the VIC is installed; otherwise, the Cisco ICS 7750 will not recognize the voice port. For more information about installing PVDMs, refer to the Installing Memory, PVDM, and VPN Modules in ASI Cards, MRP Cards, and SPE Cards document. For more information on PVDM requirements, refer to "PVDM Requirements" in the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide.


Note To see a list of voice ports on the Cisco ICS 7750, use the IOS show running-config or show diag command.



Note For a list of supported WICs, VICs, and VWICs, and the Cisco IOS release that is required for each, refer to the "Processor Cards Feature Summary" chapter in the Cisco ICS 7750 System Description.


Installing or Replacing an Interface Card in an ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS

To install an interface card in an ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS, perform the steps that follow.


Note If the Cisco ICS 7750 is running, do not power down the chassis by using the chassis power supply switch or by unplugging the power supply. Powering down the chassis may cause the Cisco ICS 7750 to lose important configuration data and will interrupt any applications or functions that are running on other cards in the chassis.



Note You must manually back up the IOS configuration files for any Flash-based card, including the MRP or ASI cards (MRP300, MRP3-8FXS, MRP3-16FXS), and the SSP.



Step 1 Back up the IOS configuration files, as appropriate:

If the ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS is not installed in the chassis, go to Step 7.

If the ASI81 or MRP200 is installed in the chassis, back up its configuration files, using the ICS System Manager application. For more information, refer to the ICS System Manager online help.

If the MRP300 or MRP3-8FXS is installed in the chassis, follow these steps to manually back up the IOS configuration files on each of these cards:

a. Telnet to the MRP300 or MRP3-8FXS card from the SPE running System Manager or from a PC connected to the ICS 7750 so that you can enter IOS software commands.

b. Enter the enable command and your IOS enable password to enter privileged EXEC command mode:

Switch>enable
Password: password
Switch#

c. Enter the following command to display the startup configuration:

Switch#show startup-config

d. Copy and paste the output from the show startup-config command into a text file on the SPE running System Manager:

Choose Start > Run.

Enter the following command to open Notepad:

notepad.exe

Select and copy (Ctrl-C) the startup-config output from the Telnet console, and paste (Ctrl-V) the output into the Notepad window.


Note Do not include the - More - lines if they are displayed in the output. Select the contents from the Telnet console and copy them to the clipboard. Go to the Notepad window and paste the clipboard contents.


If - More- is displayed at the bottom of the Telnet console, press Spacebar to display the next screen and copy from the Telnet console again, pasting to the Notepad window. Repeat until the entire startup configuration has been displayed, copied, and pasted.

From the Notepad, choose File > Save.

e. Save the startup-config file under C:\Program Files\Cisco\TFTPPath, if saving the file on the SPE running System Manager. Name the config file in this format:

<backupname>_<hostname>

where backupname is any name you choose, and hostname is the host name of the card.

For example, an MRP300 configuration file could be named Backup1_R00ffff900073.

Step 2 Shut down operations on the ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS, by pressing the card's SHTDN button.

The STATUS LED on the card starts blinking; after several minutes, it turns off. Wait for the STATUS LED to turn off before you continue.

Step 3 Put on an ESD-preventive wrist strap, and attach it to an unpainted chassis surface.


Caution To prevent ESD damage, handle the cards only by the edges, and use an ESD-preventive wrist strap or other grounding device.

Step 4 Disconnect any cables attached to the front of the interface card, and secure them out of the way, using cable ties, if necessary.

Step 5 Completely loosen the lock-down screws (at the top and bottom of the ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS).

Step 6 Press the upper and lower extractor levers outward (away from the center of the card) at the same time to disengage the ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS from the backplane. Pull the card out only far enough (about 1 inch) to disengage it from the backplane; do not completely remove the card from the chassis.


Caution Always use the extractor levers to disengage or seat cards. Failure to use the levers can cause erroneous system error messages indicating a card failure. Do not use the extractor levers to lift or support the weight of the cards.

Step 7 If you are replacing an interface card in an ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS, or if there is an interface card filler panel in the ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS, use either a number-2 Phillips screwdriver or a small flat-blade screwdriver to remove the interface card or filler panel.

Place the interface card that you removed on a foam mat, or inside a plastic bag, if you are returning the card. Save the filler panel for future use.


Note If you remove an interface card while the system card is running, the configuration of the interface card is lost until the system card reboots.


Step 8 Align the new interface card with the guides in the ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS. Slide the card gently into the slot. Figure 8 shows the installation of an interface card into an MRP.

Step 9 Push the interface card into place until you feel its edge connector mate securely with the connector in the ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS.

Step 10 Tighten the interface card mounting screws into the ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS by using a Phillips or flat-blade screwdriver.


Note If any interface card slot on the ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS is unoccupied, install a filler panel to enable proper airflow.


Step 11 Align the ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS with the upper and lower card guides in the chassis slot, and make sure that the extractor levers are in the open position (away from the center of the card).

Step 12 With the top and bottom edges of the ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS in the card guides, gently slide the card into the chassis until you feel resistance. Because there are grounding clips near the front and rear of the card guides, you might need to increase the amount of force that you use to get the card past the grounding clips. If you encounter extreme resistance, pull the card out slightly, and push it back in again.

Step 13 Press the upper and lower extractor levers inward (toward the center of the card) at the same time until they lock into their slots. This step firmly seats the ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS into the chassis.

Step 14 Connect the cables to the ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS interfaces (refer to the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide).

Step 15 The STATUS LED on the ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS blinks green as it boots. Wait until the LED turns green, and then verify the interface card installation. See the "Verifying Card Installation" section.

Step 16 Restore the startup configurations that were manually backed up for any Flash-based cards, including the SSP and each Flash-based MRP or ASI card (MRP300, MRP3-8FXS, MRP3-16FXS), from the device (computer on the network) where you stored your backup files.


Note If you stored your backup files on a remote device (computer on the network) that cannot access the SAP, you must copy the backup configuration files either to the SPE running System Manager or to a PC that is connected to the SAP console port.


a. Choose Start > Run.

b. Enter the following command to open the backup startup configuration in Notepad:

notepad.exe \\hostname\sharename\path\filename.txt

where \\hostname\sharename\path is the shared path name to the remote device (computer on the network) where you stored your backup files, and filename is the backup configuration filename for this card specified.

For example, an SSP configuration file could be named Backup1_Switch.txt, and an MRP300 configuration file could be named Backup1_R00ffff900073.txt.

c. From Notepad, choose Edit > Select All.

d. Copy the contents of the Notepad window to the clipboard.

e. Apply the backup startup configuration to the Flash-based card. Open a HyperTerminal session with the SAP (see the "Stopping and Restarting the FMMServer (SSP Replacement Only)" section).

f. Press Ctrl-backslash (\), and use the SAP menu to switch to the Flash-based card to which you want to restore the startup configuration.

g. Enter privileged EXEC mode by entering the following command:

Switch>enable

h. Enter your enable password.

i. Enter the following command to configure from the terminal:

Switch#configure terminal

j. Paste the backup startup configuration into the HyperTerminal session window.

k. Enter the following commands to save the running configuration as the startup configuration:

Switch#copy running-config startup-config 

Step 17 Repeat Step 16 for the SSP and for every Flash-based MRP or ASI card (MRP300, MRP3-8FXS, or MRP3-16FXS) in the chassis.


Note It is important to restore only those startup configurations that were saved (backed up) at the same time that the System Manager backup procedure was performed. Do not attempt to restore manually, onto a Flash-based card, a startup configuration that was saved at a time other than when System Manager was backed up. Attempting this restoration may cause System Manager to be unable to detect and manage that Flash-based card.



Replacing the SSP and the SAP

This section provides procedures for the following tasks:

Replacing the SSP

Complete the following steps to replace the SSP (see Figure 7).


Note You must manually back up the IOS configuration files for any Flash-based cards in the ICS 7750, including the SSP, MRP, or ASI cards (MRP300, MRP3-8FXS, MRP3-16FXS). You must manually restore the IOS configuration files for Flash-based cards as well. See the "Installing or Replacing an Interface Card in an ASI81, MRP, or MRP3-8FXS" section. Refer to the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide for additional information on backup and restore procedures.



Note For this procedure, install only a new SSP (an SSP that has never been installed or configured) that is in a factory configuration (with no configuration data stored on it).



Step 1 Put on an ESD-preventive wrist strap, and attach it to an unpainted chassis surface.


Caution To prevent ESD damage, handle the cards only by the edges, and use an ESD-preventive wrist strap or other grounding device.

Step 2 Align the SSP with the upper and lower card guides in slot 7 of the chassis, and make sure that the extractor levers are in the open position (pointing up and down).

Step 3 With the top and bottom edges of the card in the card guides, gently slide the card into the chassis until you feel resistance. Because there are grounding clips near the front and rear of the card guides, you might need to increase the amount of force that you use to get the card past the grounding clips, particularly if this is the first time a card has been inserted in this slot. If you encounter extreme resistance, pull the card out slightly, and then push it back in again.

Step 4 Press the upper and lower extractor levers inward (toward the center of the card) at the same time until they lock into their slots. This step firmly seats the SSP into the chassis.

ICS System Manager will assign an IP address to the SSP that is different from the IP address of the original SSP.


Note Once the SSP is seated and booted, restart the FMMServer services on the SPE running System Manager by using the net start FMMServer command. See the "Stopping and Restarting the FMMServer (SSP Replacement Only)" section.


Step 5 To configure the SSP, complete the following steps:

a. On a PC connected to the ICS 7750 or on the SPE running System Manager, launch a web browser.

b. Enter the following URL, using the IP address of the SPE running System Manager:

http://SPE IP address/icsconfig/

c. Log in as administrator (using the user ID administrator), and enter the password (the default is changeme).

d. Click Login.

e. Click ICS 7700 System Setup.

f. Make any necessary changes to the configuration screens. (Refer to the Cisco ICS 7750 Installation and Configuration Guide for configuration instructions.)

g. When you have entered the necessary settings, the Summary page displays a list of all the configuration pages and the data entered in each field.

All the page names listed on the Summary page are links to the configuration pages, where you can change any of the information that you entered. To change any of the settings, click the associated hyperlinked page. When all the settings are correct, click Next to continue to the Ready to Submit page.


Note Upon insertion of a replacement SSP into the chassis, the new SSP obtains an IP address that is different from the original IP address of the SSP. However, you can reassign the original IP address to the new SSP by using ICSConfig.



Note The Ready to Submit page provides instructions on what to do after you submit the changes to your Cisco ICS 7750. Submitting and processing these changes can take up to 20 minutes to complete.


h. Click Submit.


Caution After you click Submit, do not reboot your Cisco ICS 7750 or perform any configuration tasks on the Cisco ICS 7750 until this process is completed.

Step 6 Verify that the SSP is correctly installed (see the "Verifying Card Installation" section).

Step 7 If you do not wish to install additional cards or power supply modules, secure the SSP (and any additional cards or power supply modules that you have installed) by completely tightening the lock-down screws at the top and bottom of the cards.


Replacing the SAP

Complete the following steps to replace the SAP (see Figure 7).


Note For this procedure, install only an SAP that is in a factory configuration (with no IOS enable password stored on it).



Step 1 Use a straight-through Ethernet cable to connect your PC Ethernet NIC to either of the 10/100 Ethernet ports (labeled 1x and 2x) on the SSP.

Step 2 Put on an ESD-preventive wrist strap, and attach it to an unpainted chassis surface.


Caution To prevent ESD damage, handle the cards only by the edges, and use an ESD-preventive wrist strap or other grounding device.

Step 3 Align the SAP with the upper and lower card guides in slot 8 of the chassis, and make sure that the extractor levers are in the open position (pointing up and down).

Step 4 With the top and bottom edges of the card in the card guides, gently slide the card into the chassis until you feel resistance. Because there are grounding clips near the front and rear of the card guides, you might need to increase the amount of force that you use to get the card past the grounding clips, particularly if this is the first time a card has been inserted in this slot. If you encounter extreme resistance, pull the card out slightly, and then push it back in again.

Step 5 Press the upper and lower extractor levers inward (toward the center of the card) at the same time until they lock into their slots. This step firmly seats the SAP into the chassis.

Step 6 You do not need to configure any settings for the SAP. However, verify that the SAP is functioning correctly (see the "Verifying Card Installation" section).

Step 7 If you do not wish to install additional cards or power supply modules, secure the SAP (and any additional cards or power supply modules that you have installed) by completely tightening the lock-down screws at the top and bottom of the cards.


Removing and Replacing Power Supply Modules

Cisco ICS 7750 power supply modules are hot-swappable. The power supply module remains off until it is firmly seated. If two power supply modules are installed in the chassis, you can install or remove one power supply module or turn on or off one power supply module without affecting system performance.


Caution If your system has only one power supply module installed and you need to hot swap the power supply module, install the new power supply module before removing the old one.


Warning Before working on a system that has an on/off switch, turn OFF the power and unplug the power cord.



Warning Do not touch the power supply when the power cord is connected. For systems with a power switch, line voltages are present within the power supply even when the power switch is off and the power cord is connected. For systems without a power switch, line voltages are present within the power supply when the power cord is connected.



Warning This unit might have more than one power cord. To reduce the risk of electric shock, disconnect the two power supply cords before servicing the unit.


Removing Power Supply Modules

Figure 9 shows how to remove a power supply from the chassis.

Complete the following steps to remove a power supply module (see Figure 9):


Step 1 Put on an ESD-preventive wrist strap, and attach it to an unpainted chassis surface.


Caution To prevent ESD damage, handle the modules only by the edges, and use an ESD-preventive wrist strap or other grounding device.

Step 2 Loosen the two small Phillips screws on the top and bottom of the power supply module.

Step 3 Grasp the handle on the front of the power supply module, and gently pull the unit straight out of the chassis until it releases from the backplane connector.

Step 4 Continue to pull the power supply module out until it is free of the chassis.


Installing Power Supply Modules

Follow these steps to install a new power supply module:


Step 1 Put on an ESD-preventive wrist strap, and attach it to an unpainted chassis surface.


Caution To prevent ESD damage, handle the modules only by the edges, and use an ESD-preventive wrist strap or other grounding device.

Step 2 Align the power supply module with the guides in the power supply module slot.

Step 3 Slowly push the power supply module toward the rear of the chassis until its connector aligns with the connector on the backplane. Do not force the connection.

Step 4 Continue to push the power supply module toward the rear of the chassis until the connector is firmly seated.

Step 5 If you do not wish to install additional power supply modules or cards, secure the power supply module (and any additional cards or power supply modules that you have installed) by completely tightening the lock-down screws at the top and bottom of the cards.


Removing and Replacing the Fan Tray

The chassis includes four fans in a front-accessible, hot-swappable fan tray. The fans cool the chassis slots, the SPE hard-disk drives, and the power supply modules. Air is taken in at the bottom-front of the chassis and is exhausted out the top-rear. Fan speeds are affected by the ambient temperature and controlled by the SAP. The fans provide temperature and fan speed readings to the SAP that enable the SAP to monitor the cooling operation. Individual fans are replaced by removing and replacing the entire fan tray.

You do not need to power down the chassis for this procedure.


Caution Do not operate the system for more than 1 minute with the fan tray removed.

Removing the Fan Tray

Figure 10 shows how to remove the fan tray.

Complete the following steps to remove the fan tray (see Figure 10):


Step 1 Put on an ESD-preventive wrist strap, and attach it to an unpainted chassis surface.


Caution To prevent ESD damage, handle the modules only by the edges, and use an ESD-preventive wrist strap or other grounding device.

Step 2 Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the two lock-down screws at the bottom of the fan tray.

Step 3 Grasp the front of the fan tray, and slowly pull the tray out of the chassis. Support the fan tray from the bottom, and lift the back edge of it over the front lip of the chassis.


Installing a Fan Tray

Complete the following steps to install a fan tray:


Step 1 Put on an ESD-preventive wrist strap, and attach it to an unpainted chassis surface.


Caution To prevent ESD damage, handle the modules only by the edges, and use an ESD-preventive wrist strap or other grounding device.

Step 2 Slowly slide the fan tray into the chassis. Align the fan tray along the chassis guides and rails during insertion.

Insert the unit with a single, steady motion. Bouncing the fan tray during insertion might cause an alarm condition in the system. The unit should not be forced into the slot.

Step 3 Tighten the two lock-down screws located on the bottom front of the fan tray.

Step 4 Reset the clock in Fan Manager in ICS System Manager. For additional information, refer to the ICS System Manager online help.


Verifying Card Installation

To verify that the cards you have just installed are operating correctly, verify that the LEDs on those cards are functioning as described in Table 2.


Note The ALARM LED on Cisco ICS 7750 cards turns yellow during the POST. If the ALARM LED on any card does not turn off at the completion of POST, that card is not functioning correctly. For general information on solving problems with cards, refer to Chapter 5, "Solving Hardware Problems," in the Cisco ICS 7750 Troubleshooting Guide.

Refer to the Cisco ICS 7750 Troubleshooting Guide to verify the LED activity for the specific WIC, VIC, or VWICs that are installed in MRPs and ASI81s.


RMA Return Instructions

Under the terms and conditions of the Cisco Systems return materials authorization (RMA) policy, any replaced RMA parts must be returned to Cisco Systems.

Follow these guidelines to return parts:

Use the disposable grounding wrist trap when packing and handling electronic part(s).

Reuse the original packaging material to return electronic parts.

Affix an RMA return shipping label to the outside of each package.

Write the RMA number on the outside of all packages you return and in the reference field
(Section 2) on the waybill.

Return the parts within ten days of the date that you receive the replacement parts, or you will be billed for the outstanding parts at list price. If you are unable to return the parts within this time frame, you must call Asset Recovery at 408 526-7284 to get an approved extension.

You are responsible for all return shipping costs and customs duties. For all non-U.S. returns, you must include five copies of the proforma/customs invoice for each shipment, which lists the following items: RMA number; value of the items; description of items (including the Cisco product number).

Send a copy of the waybill and flight details by fax to Cisco USA at 408 526-5533. You can also send a copy of the waybill and flight details by e-mail to asset-recovery@cisco.com. Either method eliminates the need for further information from you and assists Cisco Systems in closing the RMA.
