This supplemental information is provided with the "Cisco 12012 GSR Air Filter Assembly Replacement and Upgrade Instructions" part number 78-11554-xx. It contains important information regarding route processor (RP) and line card placement in the Cisco 12012 GSR card cage.

Line cards based on Engine 2 and later designs are considered high-performance. Line cards based on Engine 0 and Engine1 designs are installed in any available slot. Table 1 identifies the line cards by engine design and is current as of August 01, 2000.

RP Card Slot Placement

The default factory configuration places the RP card in card slot 0. If you have two RP cards in your Cisco 12012 GSR, the default configuration places the cards in card slot 0 and card slot 11.

Before installation of the 12012 cooling upgrade kit, empirical studies have shown that an exhaust over temperature alarm will be generated any time ambient (room) temperature exceeds approximately 73.4°F (23°C).

After installation of the 12012 cooling upgrade kit, empirical studies have shown that an exhaust over temperature alarm will be generated any time ambient (room) temperature exceeds approximately 78.8°F (26°C).

Note that the right most card slot, slot 12, is unique and is designed solely for the alarm card.

You may place your RP card or cards in any available card slot in the Cisco 12012 GSR card cage. However, this will restrict the card slots available for high-performance (Engine 2) line cards.

Line Card Placement Limitations

High-performance line cards available for the Cisco 12012 GSR generate greater heat loads than do the line cards initially offered with the GSR.

Before installation of the Cisco 12012 GSR cooling upgrade kit, Cisco recommends customers not install high-performance (Engine 2) line cards in slots 0, 1, or 11.

After installation of the Cisco 12012 GSR cooling upgrade kit, Cisco recommends customers not install high-performance (Engine 2) line cards in slots 0 or 11. Slot 1 is no longer restricted.


Note Slot 1 may be used for high-performance (Engine 2) line cards.
