Variations to the GUI

This appendix describes the variations to the Cisco CNS Network Registrar Windows graphical user interface (GUI) based on whether you are connected to a version 6.0 database or an earlier database. The variations appear in several dialog boxes and for certain features, which are listed in Table G-1.

Required Data for Zone Creation in 6.0

In the DNS server properties dialog box for Network Registrar 6.0, you must explicitly enter the hostmaster e-mail address (person) and name server (ns) values on the SOA tab, and at least one name server address on the Name Servers tab. If you omit this data and click the Hosts or Resource Records tab, you cannot proceed until you enter it. Once entered, this writes the new zone to the database, and you can add hosts and resource records as desired.

Configuring Subzones

This function is described in the "Adding Subzones" section. The GUI dialog box for this function varies based on if you are connected to a Network Registrar 6.0 database or an earlier database:

If you are connected to a 6.0 database, use the procedure described in that section.

If you are connected to an earlier database, use the procedure described in the Network Registrar User's Guide for version 5.5 or earlier.

The Primary Zone dialog box for 6.0 does not include the Subzones tab, so you must add, modify, and delete subzones based on resource records you create on the Resource Records tab (see Figure G-1).

The same dialog box for earlier Network Registrar versions includes a Subzones tab (see Figure G-2).

When you click the Add button in this dialog box, this opens the Add Subzone dialog box (see Figure G-3), where you can add the name servers and glue records for the subzone.

Sorting and Filtering Resource Records

This function is described in the "Listing Records" section and the "Filtering Records" section.

When you click the Resource Records tab in the Primary Zone dialog box for 6.0, the resulting dialog box does not include the "Record filter and search" function, nor does it include the Filter records button (see Figure G-4).

The same dialog box for earlier Network Registrar versions includes these functions (see Figure G-5).

Adding CNAME and MX Records for a Zone

This function is described in the "Adding Address, Canonical Name, and Mail Exchanger Records" section.

When you click the Add button of the Hosts tab in the Primary Zone dialog box for 6.0, the resulting Add Host dialog box does not include the "Aliases" or "MX records" input fields (see Figure G-6). You must add this data using the Resource Records tab.

The same dialog box for earlier Network Registrar versions includes these input fields (see Figure G-7).
