Collecting Baseline Information
This chapter describes how to collect baseline information using Netflow and Passthru data sources. You can use NetFlow data from the branch router to identify top applications, top talkers, and network resource utilization. Passthru data sources can be used to collect response time statistics before WAAS is deployed.
Using Netflow for Traffic Analysis
To provide a real-time view into the most active applications and hosts, click Monitor > Overview and choose a Netflow (NDE) data source.

Select Monitor > Apps, then select the Netflow (NDE) data source to provide visibility into the top applications and the current rates. Selecting the Cumulative Data radio button will show the top applications, the cumulative data for those applications, and the percentage of network traffic made up by each application.
Figure 5-2 shows an example of the Top Applications basic report for an NDE data source.

Select Monitor -> Hosts, then select the Netflow (NDE) data source to provide visibility into the top hosts and the current rates. Selecting the Cumulative Data radio button will show the top hosts, the cumulative data for those hosts, and the percentage of network traffic used by each host.
Figure 5-3 shows an example of the Top Hosts basic report for an NDE data source.

Select Report > Basic Reports, then select the Top Applications report for the NDE data source to provide visibility into trending of the top applications rates over time. You can configure a Top Hosts report to view the top hosts rates the same way.

Collecting Passthru Information for Application Performance Analysis
Step 1 Login to the Branch WAE and ensure that flow monitor is enabled and that flows are being exported to the NAM VB. If either condition is not met, see the section Configuring WAAS to Send Flow Information to NAM VB, page 4-1.
Step 2 Configure the WAE to pass through (leave as not optimized) server traffic with the following commands:
no tfo optimize
We want the NAM VB to receive non-optimized flows wo we can create a pre-WAAS optimization baseline report.
Step 3 Wait for 15-30 minutes or longer (depending on the application) for the Passthru report to collect data
On the NAM VB GUI, click Monitor > Response Time for the Passthru data source and collect the baseline server response time information. Select the server and click on Details to get more metrics. Record the Transaction Time as a baseline metric.
Figure 5-5 shows an example of the details of Response Time Distribution for the Passthru Data source.
