This release note provides information about new features in the CNS NetFlow Collection Engine 4.0 release. The CNS NetFlow Collection Engine application is used with the NetFlow services data export feature on Cisco routers and Catalyst 5000 and 6000 series switches. CNS NetFlow Collection Engine provides fast, scalable, and economical data collection from multiple export devices exporting NetFlow data records.

In previous releases, this product was referred to as Cisco NetFlow FlowCollector (NFC).

What Is New

The following features were added in CNS NetFlow Collection Engine, Release 4.0:

NetFlow Data Export Format Version 9

The NetFlow Data Export Version 9 is an enhancement to support different technologies such as Multicast, Internet Protocol Security (IPSec), and Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS). CNS NetFlow Collection Engine, Release 4.0 can collect, filter, and aggregate Version 9 data in the same way it does for NetFlow Data Export Versions 1 through 8.Version 9 is not compatible with previous versions of CNS NetFlow Collection Engine.

Cafeteria-style aggregation

Users can define aggregation schemes by choosing keys and values. The key fields form a unique key for output file records. The value fields for records with the same unique key are aggregated.

Linux port

CNS NetFlow Collection Engine, Release 4.0 can be deployed on a Linux platform using RedHat Linux 7.1 for i386 processors.

CNS/XML interface

CNS NetFlow Collection Engine, Release 4.0 integrates with CNS using the CNS Integration Bus. This interface allows CNS applications to configure and manage CNS NetFlow Collection Engine and uses XML to format application-specific messages.

Cisco CNS 2100 Series Intelligence Engine appliance

CNS NetFlow Collection Engine, Release 4.0 can be deployed on the Cisco CNS 2100 Series Intelligence Engine appliance.

Caveats

Table 1 lists the caveats that were closed or resolved in CNS NetFlow Collection Engine, Release 4.0. In Table 1, "C" indicates a closed caveat and "R" indicates a resolved caveat.

System Requirements

CNS NetFlow Collection Engine operates with the following platforms:

Solaris 2.6 or 2.8. A minimum of an Ultra-1 workstation is recommended with at least 128 MB RAM, 512 MB of swap space, and 4 GB of disk space.

HP-UX, Version 11i (32-bit and 64-bit are supported). A minimum of a Class C workstation is recommended with at least 128 MB RAM, 512 MB of swap space, and 4 GB of disk space.

Linux for RedHat Linux 7.1 for i386 processors. Requires RedHat Package Manager (RPM). An i386 processor-based Linux platform is required with at least 128 MB RAM, 512 MB of swap space, and 4 GB of disk space.

Cisco CNS 2100 Series Intelligence Engine appliance.


Note To prevent NetFlow data export packet loss, the workstation should be dedicated to the CNS NetFlow Collections Engine and should not be running other applications.


CNS NetFlow Collection Engine, Release 4.0 requires at least 45 MB of disk space for its binary and configuration files.

CNS NetFlow Collection Engine generates output files containing aggregated data. These files require additional disk space; the exact amount depends on the flow arrival rate, collection interval, number of aggregation schemes specified, binary versus ASCII data file types, use of compression or not, and data file retention policies.

NetFlow Services and IOS Release Support

CNS NetFlow Collection Engine functionality is currently available with the following Cisco devices:

Cisco routers

Catalyst 5000 series switches equipped with a NetFlow feature card (NFFC)

Catalyst 6000 series switches.

Technical Assistance Center

The Cisco TAC is available to all customers who need technical assistance with a Cisco product, technology, or solution. Two types of support are available through the Cisco TAC: the Cisco TAC Web Site and the Cisco TAC Escalation Center.

Inquiries to Cisco TAC are categorized according to the urgency of the issue:

Priority level 4 (P4)—You need information or assistance concerning Cisco product capabilities, product installation, or basic product configuration.

Priority level 3 (P3)—Your network performance is degraded. Network functionality is noticeably impaired, but most business operations continue.

Priority level 2 (P2)—Your production network is severely degraded, affecting significant aspects of business operations. No workaround is available.
