This module explains the methods by which the operator of the Application Performance Assurance Device Console (APADC) defines the individuals and groups that provide the basis of the system reporting from the Network Module Enhanced Application Performance Assurance (NME-APA).

Identifying Users

This section describes the methods by which the operator correlates users or groups with IP address or VLAN information. The NME-APA uses this correlation to identify and report on the users or groups who transmit or receive traffic on the network.

A maximum of 500 users can be defined, one of whom is the fixed default user. A maximum of 100 groups can be defined.

Step 1 In the Navigation pane, select User Management > Provisioning.

The Provisioning screen appears in the Configuration pane with the Users tab displaying the list of users.

Step 1 In the Navigation pane, select User Management > Provisioning.

The Provisioning screen appears in the Configuration pane with the Users tab displaying the list of users.

Step 2 Click Add.

The User Management dialog box appears displaying the Add User form.

Step 3 In the User Name field, enter a meaningful name for the user.

Step 4 From the Network Identifier drop-down list, choose a network identifier.

The available network identifiers are:

IP Address(es)

IP Range(s)

VLAN ID(s)

Step 5 In the Network Identifier field, enter the information to identify the user.

If you selected IP Address, enter 1 or 2 valid IP addresses in the Network Identifier field. If you enter 2 IP addresses, separate them with a semicolon.

If you selected IP Range, enter 1 or 2 valid IP address ranges in the Network Identifier field. If you enter 2 IP address ranges, separate them with a semicolon.

An IP address range is specified using subnet mask notation; for example, 192.168.47.0/24. This means all addresses in the range 192.168.47.0 to 192.168.47.255. The host part of the IP address must have binary zeroes; therefore, 192.168.47.5/24 is not acceptable. The number following the forward slash can be 0 to 31. The range 0.0.0.0/0 matches any address.

If you selected VLAN ID, enter a VLAN number in the range 1 to 2046. Separate multiple VLAN IDs with semicolons.

Step 6 In the Profile Policy field, enter the number of the profile policy to associate with this user.

Step 7 To log traffic for this user in real-time, check the Real Time check box.

Step 8 Click OK.

The new user is added to the list of users in the Provisioning screen.

Step 2 Check the check boxes next to the user or users you want to delete.

Step 3 Click Delete.

The user or users are removed from the list.

The APADC provides the operator with a real-time view of the users who are passing traffic through the NME-APA.


Step 1 In the Navigation pane, select User Management > Monitoring.

The Monitoring screen appears in the Configuration pane.

Managing User Configurations

The APADC is a Graphical User Interface (GUI) which gives the NME-APA operator an intuitive method of modifying NME-APA configurations. Configuration changes are made to an NME-APA device through a process of retrieving the device's configuration for display in the APADC, modifying the configuration parameters in the APADC, and applying the modified configuration back to the NME-APA device.

The user configuration is one of the three configurations that you manage using the APADC and apply to an NME-APA device. It contains user definitions and group definitions. The other two configuration types are device configuration and traffic configuration.


Note When the APADC is not connected to a device, the user configuration is empty.



Note When the APADC is connected to a device, the configuration is automatically retrieved when the Provisioning page is displayed. For information on connecting to a device, see Managing Device Connections, page 2-2.


NME-APA user configurations can also be stored offline in configuration files and restored to NME-APA devices through the configuration Export and Import functions. The default location for storing user configurations is C:\APADC\apache-tomcat-5.5.20\webapps\ROOT\scate_exports.


Caution When editing the user configuration, you must click Save before navigating away from the current page otherwise your changes are not saved.

Step 1 In the Navigation pane, select User Management > Provisioning.

The Provisioning screen appears in the Configuration pane, displaying the Retrieve button in the bottom section.

Step 2 Click Retrieve.

The user configuration is retrieved and loaded into the APADC.

Applying Configuration Changes

The APADC interface allows you to modify a user configuration without affecting the device. To use the modified configuration, you must apply it to the device.


Step 1 In the Navigation pane, select User Management > Provisioning.

The User Provisioning screen appears in the Configuration pane, displaying the Apply button in the bottom section.

Step 2 Click Apply.

The user configuration is applied to the device.

A user configuration can be exported and saved to a file so that it can be archived or applied to other devices.


Step 1 In the Navigation pane, select User Management > Provisioning.

The Provisioning screen appears in the Configuration pane, displaying the Export button in the bottom section.

Step 2 Click Export.

The Export User Information dialog box appears.

Step 3 In the Export File Name field, enter a file name for the configuration file.

Step 4 Click Export.

The user configuration is exported to a file.

Note If you manually edit the user configuration file prior to import, you must ensure that the file contains no more than 499 users and no more than 100 groups. Also, each user definition must have at most two IP addresses or IP ranges, and each group definition must have at most one IP address or IP range. User configuration files are imported from the following directory: C:\APADC\apache-tomcat-5.5.20\webapps\ROOT\scate_exports



Step 1 In the Navigation pane, select User Management > Provisioning.

The Provisioning screen appears in the Configuration pane, displaying the Import button in the bottom section.

Step 2 Click Import.

The Import Users dialog box appears.

Step 3 Click the radio button next to the file you want to import.

Step 4 Click Import.

The user configuration is imported to the APADC.
