This document describes how to use the RPCTest tool available on Cisco Unity to detect via remote procedure call (RPC) if the Microsoft Exchange server is really reachable.
This procedure is helpful when you receive errors that state the Microsoft Exchange server is off line, but you have access to Exchange, and it appears to be reachable.

Cisco Unity uses RPC in order to determine if it can talk to the Microsoft Exchange server. The RPCTest tool uses this functionality to help troubleshoot communications problems between the two servers.
This procedure describes how to use this tool in order to detect if Microsoft Exchange server communicates properly with Cisco Unity using RPC.
Complete these steps in order to run the RPCTest tool:
On the Cisco Unity Server, go to Start > Run, and type cmd in order to bring up the command-line window.
Change directories to x:\CommServer\Utilities\Customer Support Tools\RPCTest\.
Where x is the drive letter where Commserver is installed.
Run this command:
rpctest -s exchangeservername
Where exchangeservername is the name of your Exchange server that Unity claims does not respond.
The results of this command show you whether the server is on line or off line.
