Introduction

During Cisco Unified Communications Manager bootup on the Cisco Media Convergence Server 7816, this error is received:

*** An error occured during the file system check.
*** Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
*** when you leave the shell.
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D to continue):

Also, the user is unable to login to Cisco Unified Communications Manager in some other situations.

This document describes how to resolve these errors.

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Error while Booting CUCM 5.x/6.x/7.x

The Cisco Unified Communications Manager server is unable to boot. When trying to reboot the server, this error message appears regarding inconsistencies in the file system:

/common contains a file system with errors, check forced
/common Inodes that were part of a corrupted orphan link list found.
 
/common: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY (i.e. without -a or -p options)
 
/grub: clean, 26/66520 files, 16820/265072 blocks
/partB: clean, 11/3515680 files, 118535/7018396 blocks
[FAILED]

The user is unable to login to Cisco Unified Communications Manager and receives the EXT3-fs error message.

Solution

Use the Unified Communications Manager Recovery CD to restore access to the file system. The Unified Communications Manager Recovery CD can be used on any server and application experiencing this issue. This process can be used to recover both Root and Common partition file systems that are affected. First, you need to download the latest iso file for the recovery disk, regardless of product version. New recovery disks generally work with older releases.

Use these steps to resolve the error:

  1. Click on the Download Now button and download the latest release of the iso file.

  2. Burn the .iso image to a CD and create a bootable recovery disk.

  3. After creating the recovery disk, boot the server from the recovery disk.

  4. This menu for the recovery disk appears:

  5. Choose option F, and respond YES. This will check and correct the file system automatically.

  6. Finally, choose option Q to exit the recovery disk program.

  7. Remove the recovery disk and reboot the server. The system should boot normally.

Note:  It is highly recommended that you perform the full system backup, and then re-image the system using DRS, to make sure the file system is stable in the future.
