Introduction

Cisco IP phones have buttons that you can program to dial a number when they are pressed. For example, the default template for the Cisco 7960 IP phone has four speed dial buttons. These buttons can be configured by a user that has been associated with an IP phone or by the CallManager server administrator.

This document is only applicable to Cisco CallManager versions 3.x and 4.x. Refer to Bulk Administration Tool: How to Assign Speed Dial Numbers to Multiple Phones for more information on how to configure speed dial in Cisco Unified Communications Manager 7.x.

Prerequisites

Requirements

Before you configure the speed dial buttons on a phone, you need to make sure your Phone Button Template is configured to support speed dial buttons. Cisco 7970/7960/7940/7910 IP phones allow the configuration of speed dials by default.

This document assumes that you already know how to create users and associate devices to the users. Refer to Creating Users, Phones and Associations in Cisco CallManager for more information.

Components Used

The information in this document is based on these software and hardware versions:

  • Cisco CallManager 3.2(x), 4.x

  • Cisco IP Phone 7960

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Note: This document can also be used for other versions of Cisco CallManager and other models of IP Phones.

Configure the Speed Dial Buttons

As a Cisco CallManager Server Administrator

The Cisco CallManager server administrator can change the speed dial buttons for any user with these steps:

Note: In early 3.0(x) versions, only users had the ability to modify the speed dials. For more information, see the As a Cisco CallManager User section of this document. The feature that allows the CallManager server administrator to do this was added in later versions.

Note: The maximum number of speed dials that can be configured are five for a 7960 and one for a 7940. This is the supported feature of these phones. You cannot have more than these configured.

  1. Go to http://<callmanager's name or IP address>/ccmadmin and log in as the administrator.

  2. Select Device > Phone.

  3. Enter the search string for the phone you wish to configure (optional) and click Find.

  4. Click the phone Device Name.

  5. Click Add/Update Speed Dials.

  6. Configure the Speed Dial Number and the Display Text.

  7. Click Update and Close.

  8. Click Reset Phone for the changes to take effect.

    Note: This disrupts any active communication on that phone.

As a Cisco CallManager User

A user can update the speed dials of phone devices associated with a specific user with this procedure:

  1. Go to http://<callmanager name or IP address>/ccmuser and log in with the UserID and password.

  2. Click Add/Update your Speed Dials.

  3. Configure the Speed Dial Number and the Display Text.

  4. Click Update.

  5. Press **#** on the Cisco IP phone to reset it for the changes to take effect.

    Note: This disrupts any active communication on that phone.

Configure Speed Dials through Extension Mobility

Note: Cisco CallManager Extension Mobility configuration is not covered in this document. Refer to the Configuration Checklist for Cisco CallManager Extension Mobility in Cisco CallManager Extension Mobility feature note for more information on this feature.

Complete these steps to configure speed dials with Cisco CallManager Extension Mobility:

  1. Go to http://<callmanager's name or IP address>/ccmadmin and log in as the administrator.

  2. Select Device > Device Setting > Device Profile.

  3. Click Profile Name.

  4. As an administrator, if you use Extension Mobility for your Cisco IP phone users, you can configure speed dials on the User Device Profile Configuration page:

  5. Click Add/Update Speed Dials in the top right corner of the User Device Profile Configuration page.

  6. Enter the speed dial values and click Update and Close.

  7. You must log out and log in again to see the speed dials on your phone. Click OK when this message appears:

Similarly, individual users can update the speed dials in their User Device Profile from the CallManager's User Options menu:

  1. Go to http://<cm_server>/ccmuser and log in with the UserID and password.

  2. Select the user's Device Profile.

  3. Click Add/Update your Speed Dials.

    Note: When you update the speed dials through the CallManager's User Options Menu, you do not receive a warning message that you need to log out of the device and log in again. You need to do so to see the changes.

Troubleshooting Speed Dials

Error Displays when User Presses the Fast Dials Button

When a user presses the Fast Dials button on an IP phone, this error message appears:

Personal Fast Dials: Error: -7ffbc50d:user (2124) 
was unable to be validated . (15091)

Solution

This error appears due to DC Directory replication issues. Refer to Fixing Problems with DC Directory for more information on troubleshooting DC Directory.

Speed Dial Configuration is Lost After Cisco CallManager Upgrade

After the Cisco CallManager servers in a cluster are upgraded, the Speed Dial configuration is lost. The Speed Dials work fine before the upgrade.

Solution

Complete these steps in order to resolve this issue:

  1. Make sure the Speed Dial configuration file is present in C:\CiscoWebs\IPPHoneServices\CCMCIP\. If it is not in this directory, copy the Speed Dial file (SA-Directory.xml) into the CCMIP directory.

  2. After the Speed Dial file is moved into the CCMCIP directory, update the IP Phone Services URL for the SA-Directory service to http://ccm_ip/CCMCIP/SA-Directory.xml, and update all the subscriptions.
