Introduction

This document provides guidelines and best practices on how to upgrade Cisco Unified IP Phone 6921, 6941, and 6961 from firmware version 8.5(x) SCCP Unsigned to version 9.2(1) or current shipping version so they can successfully register on a Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 server. Cisco Unified IP Phone 6900 series produced before mid-2010 came with 8.5(x) SCCP Unsigned firmware version. The phones that are on 8.5(x) SCCP Unsigned firmware will not directly upgrade to 9.2(1) SIP Signed firmware. This document provide instructions to upgrade the Cisco Unified IP Phone 6900 series from 8.5(x) SCCP Unsigned to 9.2(1) firmware.

Overview

There is a large installed base of Cisco Unified IP Phones 6921, 6941, and 6961 at customer sites throughout the world. Many of these phones were shipped with SCCP 8.5 Unsigned firmware. Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 requires the Cisco Unified IP Phone 6900 series to be on SIP 9.2(1) Signed or later firmware version. Therefore, Cisco Unified IP Phone 6900 series will not register on Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 server if they are not on 9.2(1) Signed or later firmware version.

Cisco Unified IP Phones 6921, 6941, and 6961 series with 9.0(2) firmware can directly upgrade to 9.2(1) firmware and register with Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000. However, Cisco Unified IP Phones 6921, 6941, and 6961 with 8.5(x) firmware version cannot upgrade to 9.2(1) version directly. This document provides step-by-step instructions on how to overcome this and successfully register these phones on the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 server.

Because Cisco Unified IP Phones 6901 and 6911 were shipped with 9.0(2) firmware, they will directly upgrade to 9.2(1) firmware and there is no workaround required for the upgrade.

Problem Description

SCCP 8.5 Unsigned firmware does not directly upgrade to SIP 9.2(1) Signed firmware in single step. VAR(s) will need to follow the guidelines in this document to upgrade Cisco Unified IP Phones 6921, 6941, and 6961 from SCCP 8.5 Unsigned firmware to SIP 9.2(1) Signed firmware.

You can check phone firmware version from the phone by pressing Setting > Phone Information > Active Load.

These phone models with firmware version require the workaround described in this document:

  • Cisco Unified IP Phone 6921 with 8.5(x) phone firmware

  • Cisco Unified IP Phone 6941with 8.5(x) phone firmware

  • Cisco Unified IP Phone 6961 with 8.5(x) phone firmware

These phone models with firmware version do NOT require the workaround and will upgrade directly to 9.2(1) SIP firmware:

  • Cisco Unified IP Phone 6921 with 9.0(2) phone firmware

  • Cisco Unified IP Phone 6941 with 9.0(2) phone firmware

  • Cisco Unified IP Phone 6961 with 9.0(2) phone firmware

  • Cisco Unified IP Phone 6901 with 9.0(2) phone firmware

  • Cisco Unified IP Phone 6911 with 9.0(2) phone firmware

Error message on phone screen

After the Cisco Unified IP Phones 6921, 6941, and 6961 on 8.5(x) SCCP firmware version are powered on and connected to the network, the phone device information needs to be entered on the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 phone configuration page.

Note: Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 does not support auto-registration. The administrator will need to enter the phone information manually or use the spreadsheet with the required data.

The Cisco Unified IP Phone 6900 series with 8.5(x) SCCP phone firmware will try to register to the Cisco Unified Communications Business Edition 3000. However, the phones will fail to register. The phone displays a progress bar that stays at 0%.

At this time, press the Settings key on the phone. The New Call soft key is displayed on the phone. Select the New Call soft key. "Out of Service!" information is displayed on the phone.

Before going over the workaround procedure, press Setting > Phone Information > Active Load in order to verify the phone firmware version on the phone.

If the active phone load is 8.5(x) or earlier, the customer will need to apply the workaround to upgrade the firmware.

Preparation

The upgrade process involves rebooting the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 server twice. The phones will reset during the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 reboot. Therefore, it is recommended that the VAR(s) should plan the upgrade during the maintenance window with limited impact to the users.

These 9.2(1) Unsigned and Signed phone firmware COP files are required:

  • cmterm-69xx-sip.9-2-1-0-uns.cop.sgn :6921/6941/6961 SIP 9.2(1) Unsigned COP file

  • cmterm-69xx-sip.9-2-1-0.cop.sgn :6921/6941/6961 SIP 9.2(1) Signed COP file

These files can be downloaded from http://www.cisco.com.

Summary and Key Points

Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 servers require that the Cisco Unified IP Phone 6900 series need to be on 9.2(1) or later firmware version. The procedure provided in this document is only required for the Cisco Unified IP Phone 6900 series that are on 8.5(x) firmware. By following this process, the phones will successfully upgrade to 9.2(1) firmware and later.

  • You should use the latest shipping firmware version on your current Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000. As of the writing of this application note, SIP 9.2(1) is the current shipping firmware for Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 software version 8.6.

  • Cisco Unified IP Phones 6921, 6941, and 6961 that are on 9.0(2) or later firmware will directly upgrade to SIP 9.2(1) firmware.

  • Auto-registration is not supported on Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000. The administrator will need to enter the phone information manually or use the spreadsheet with the required data.

  • This procedure does not apply to Cisco Unified IP Phones 6901 and 6911. These phones were originally shipped with 9.0(2) firmware.

  • You might run into an existing defect (CSCtj05988 (registered customers only) ) that requires that the phone administrator to leave the MD5 checksum field blank while installing the COP files using a DVD. If MD5 checksum verification is required, then place the COP file on the SFTP server and validate the MD5 checksum value.

Known Issues

These are some of the known issues:

  • CSCtj05988 (registered customers only) —Upgrade broken on entering valid MD5 checksum during DVD COP upgrade

  • CSCtr97656 (registered customers only) —Default ringtones for 6961 phones not working in version 9-2-1-0
