Introduction

This document describes a step-by-step In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU) procedure on Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches in Virtual Switching System (VSS) mode with the use of the Supervisor 2T with dual-homed Cisco Catalyst 6800 Instant Access Switches (FEX) attached.

Prerequisites

Requirements

There are no specific requirements for this document.

Components Used

The information in this document is based on Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches in VSS mode that run Supervisor Engine 2T with a dual-homed 6800IA attached on WS-X6904-40G linecards.

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Upgrade Procedure

Initial Setup

The upgrade procedure is performed for Cisco IOS® Software Release 15.1(2)SY to Release 15.1(2)SY1.

Here are the statistics before the ISSU process:

  • The Catalyst 6500 chassis with Switch ID 1 is Active and the Switch with ID 2 is Standby (Hot).
  • Both of the chassis are up on Cisco IOS Software Release 15.1(2)SY.
  • A single 6800IA that runs Cisco IOS software Release 15.0(2)EX2 is connected to VSS on WS-X6904-40G linecards with a dual-home connection. The FEX port-channel number is 99 and the FEX ID is 110.

  3. Use the issu loadversion command in order to start the upgrade process.

    In this step, the VSS standby chassis reboots, reloads with the new image, and initializes as the VSS standby chassis in SSO redundancy mode, running the new image. This step is complete when the chassis configuration is synchronized, as indicated by the Bulk sync succeeded message. It might take several seconds to a few minutes for the new image to load and for the VSS standby chassis to transition to SSO mode.

  4. When the VSS standby chassis successfully runs the new image in the SSO redundancy state and all of the linecards on the VSS standby chassis are up and online, enter the issu runversion command in order to force a switchover. The upgraded VSS standby chassis takes over as the new active chassis, running the new image. The formerly active chassis reloads and initializes as the new VSS standby chassis in SSO mode, running the old image (in case the software upgrade needs to be aborted and the old image restored). This step is complete when the chassis configuration is synchronized, as indicated by the Bulk sync succeeded message.

  5. Use the issu acceptversion command in order to stop the Rollback Timer. This is necessary because if the timer expires, the upgraded chassis reloads and reverts to the previous software version.

  6. Use the issu runversion fex all command in order to start the image download and upgrade procedure on the FEX (6800IA). The FEX triggers the image download from the new software bundle of the Supervisor2T (here Cisco IOS software Release 15.2(2)SY1). If you use FEX stacks, the master is responsible to extract the image to its members. A TFTP server runs at 192.1.1.1.

  7. In order to continue, enter the issu commitversion command to upgrade the VSS standby chassis and complete the ISSU sequence. The VSS standby chassis reboots, reloads with the new image, and initializes as the VSS standby chassis in the SSO redundancy state, running the new image. This step is complete when the chassis configuration is synchronized, as indicated by the Bulk sync succeeded message, and all of the linecards on the new VSS-Standby are up and online.

Verify

In order to verify that the upgrade was successful, use these commands:

  • show issu state detail
  • show redundancy
  • show module switch all

Here is the current state after the ISSU process:

  • 6500 chassis with Switch ID 2 is Active and the Switch with ID 1 is Standby (Hot). They are now on Cisco IOS Software Version 15.1(2)SY1.
  • The Instant Access client (6800IA) now runs Cisco IOS Software Release 15.0(2)EX4.
