This field notice affects Cisco 7200/VIP2 systems using a specific hardware revision of one of the following Ethernet port adapters:
PA-4E(=)
PA-5EFL(=)
PA-8E(=)
A problem has been found that affects a specific hardware version of Ethernet port adapters installed in Cisco 7200/VIP2 systems. This condition can cause one of the described failures in Cisco 7200/VIP2 systems.
Note: Originally, this field notice was written specifically for the 7200 platform, but similar problems are now known to happen on VIP-based units. In either case, follow the upgrade path to the latest port adapter hardware revision.
Note: PA-4E and PA-8E Ethernet port adapters that are hardware revision 1.11 or PA-5EFL Ethernet port adapters that are hardware revision 1.2 may cause Cisco 7200/VIP2 systems to reload.
Cisco 7200/VIP2 systems with one or more PA-4E and PA-8E hardware revision 1.11 or PA-5EFL hardware revision 1.2 Ethernet port adapters may exhibit one of the following symptoms:
System restarted by power-on
A Cisco 7200/VIP2 system may reload with no information left in the fault history buffer. The only information available is through the show version Cisco IOS command, indicating that a system reload occurred due to a power-on condition. Below is an example of the output of the show version command illustrating this:
Router uptime is 2 days, 19 hours, 58 minutes System restarted by power-on at 01:19:00 UTC Sun Mar 9 1997 System image file is "slot0:c7200-inu-mz.111-8.CA1.bin", booted via slot0
This is the most common symptom and is most likely to occur under heavy traffic loads.
PCI parity error
A system reload may also occur on light to moderately loaded Cisco 7200/VIP2 routers. In this case, the symptoms are quite different. The router reloads with a PCI parity error or an error interrupt, for example:
ERR-1-SERR: PCI bus system/parity error %ERR-1-FATAL: Fatal error interrupt, reloading err_stat=0x0, err_enable=0xFF, mgmt_event=0x8 *** System received an Error Interrupt *** signal= 0x16, code= 0x0, context= 0x60997fa0 PC = 0x6010dc54, Cause = 0x420, Status Reg = 0x34018002 0x6010dc54:r4k_sig_dispatch_return(0x6010dbfc)+0x58
Error interrupt
A Cisco 7200/VIP2 system reload may also occur with the following error:
System was restarted by error - an Error Interrupt, PC 0x600267A0 7200 Software (C7200-DR-M), Version 11.1(8)CA1, EARLY DEPLOYMENT RELEASE Compiled Thu 23-Jan-97 19:43 by bellb (current version) Image text-base: 0x600088F0, data-base: 0x605AE000

A Cisco 7200/VIP2 system reload may also occur with the following error:

Hardware changes have been made to the Ethernet port adapters that correct the issues described above. Cisco strongly recommends that customers with Cisco 7200/VIP2 systems upgrade all PA-4E and PA-8E adapters with hardware version 1.11 to hardware version 1.12 or later, and upgrade PA-5EFL adapters with hardware version 1.2 to hardware version 1.3 or later.
Beginning September 9, 1997, customers may obtain replacement PA-4E and PA-8E hardware version 1.12 or PA-5EFL hardware version 1.3 Ethernet port adapters on a port-for-port basis at no charge through Cisco's Technical Assistance Center (TAC).
Revised PA-4E, PA-5EFL, and PA-8E port adapters can be distinguished using the show diag Cisco IOS command. Revised PA-4E, PA-5EFL, and PA-8E port adapters can be identified by the following part numbers:
Port Adapter |
New Revision Level |
---|---|
PA-4E |
PN 73-1556-07 Rev. A0 HW-V 1.12 or later |
PA-5EFL |
PN 73-1679-04 Rev. A0 HW-V 1.3 or later |
PA-8E |
PN 73-1391-07 Rev. A0 HW-V 1.12 or later |
You may also identify the hardware version of your Ethernet port adapter by using the show diag Cisco IOS command.
