Problem Description

The FF EF is the TN3270 end-of-record (EOR) indicator. The failure condition can occur for a TN3270 session if a packet is received without an EOR, followed by another packet with an EOR, followed by data.

When the failure occurs, a random number of bytes will be appended to the first packet. If the second packet contains only EOR, or if multiple packets are received where each packet ends in EOR, the problem does not occur.

The failure could result in one of several anomalous system behaviors, including the following:

  • The CIP is forced into a spontaneous reload.

  • Sessions accessing the host via this channel connection are lost.

Additionally, the following message is seen in the log if it did not wrap:

  %DEBUGGER-0-FATAL_ERROR: Fatal error (code=35)

To prevent wrapping of the error log, we recommend configuring the log as shown:

The Cisco IOS software error has been assigned Cisco bug ID CSCdj08881.

Workaround/Solution

There is no workaround; we strongly recommend upgrading.

  • If you are using 11.0(BT) , you must either upgrade the Cisco IOS to 11.0(15)BT when it becomes available, or call the TAC to receive interim release 11.0(14.2)BT.

  • For 11.2 users, you must either upgrade the Cisco microcode to CIP22-19 via Cisco Connection Online (CCO), or upgrade to Cisco IOS 11.2(6) when it becomes available.

    • If you are a registered CCO user, you can download CIP microcode online from the the CIP Microcode Upgrade Planner. Click here to go to the Software Center (registered customers only) on CCO. From there, click Cisco IOS Software, then scroll down and click CIP Microcode to access the CIP Microcode Upgrade Planner.

    • If you are registered but are not logged in, click "Login" in the toolbar below. You will be returned to the CCO home page where you can log in. After logging in, click Software Center, then Cisco IOS Software, then scroll down and click CIP Microcode to access the CIP Microcode Upgrade Planner.

    • If you are not a registered CCO user, you can register now.
