Problem Description

The Cisco Optical Networking System (ONS) 15454 Series Multi-Service Transport Platform (MSTP) controller cards with software Release 9.8.0 and 10.0 (listed in the Products Affected section) that were shipped prior to March 16, 2014 receive a BKUPMEMP alarm within two to three days after a reset occurs. A genuine memory corruption also results in a BKUPMEMP alarm. This particular issue does not impact service.

Background

The TNC, TNCE, TSC, and TSCE Series controller cards with software Release 9.8.0 and 10.0 that were shipped prior to March 16, 2014 contain a file with an additional empty line (CR/LF). This causes a Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) audit process failure for the file when the regular CRC audit runs on the controller card. This failure activates the BKUPMEMP alarm on the controller card. Since the audit process runs periodically, this alarm appears within two to three days and not instantaneously.

Problem Symptom

The BKUPMEMP alarm activates on certain TNC, TNCE, TSC, and TSCE Series cards. Refer to the How To Identify Affected Products section for more details about the impacted cards.

Workaround/Solution

In order to resolve this issue, load the Release 9.8.0, 10.0, or later software from Cisco Connection Online (CCO) to both partitions of the impacted controller card.

Complete these steps for nodes that have a primary shelf or a subtended shelf with the impacted controllers in order to resolve the issue:

If this is a provisioned node, then back up the database.
Download the software. Each controller has two software partitions: Active and Protect (P1 and P2, for example). The software is downloaded to the Protect partition (P2) of the active and standby controller with a primary shelf and subtended shelves.
Perform an Activate in order to set the newly-downloaded software as the working load. P2 is now the Active partition.
Download the software again in order to replace the load in the current Protect partition (P1). The correct software is now in both partitions (P1 and P2) of the controller. This will also copy the package to the USB on M2 and M6 nodes automatically.

How To Identify Affected Products

The TNC, TNCE, TSC, and TSCE Series cards that are listed in the Products Affected section that were shipped with software Release 9.8.0 or 10.0 prior to March 16, 2014 experience the BKUPMEMP alarm declaration.

Cisco recommends that you check the TNC, TNCE, TSC, or TSCE Series card serial number with the Serial Number Validation Tool in order to identify the affected hardware.

If you determine that your hardware is affected, follow the workaround procedure that is described in the Workaround/Solution section in order to avoid this issue.
