Problem Description

The signal from a Data Over Cable System Interface Specification (DOCSIS) transponder installed in a GainMaker 4-Port Node with an optical interface board (OIB) (part number of 4027985) could be cancelled or distorted when combined at the output of the Rx.  

Three examples of how the DOCSIS transponder signal can be combined at the output of the Rx are shown here:

Background

Introduction of the DOCSIS transponder as an option for the GainMaker 4-Port Node identified a configuration limitation not present with Hybrid Management Sub-layer (HMS) transponders. HMS transponders split off the transponder signal and feed it into the Phoenix before a combined signal at the output of the Rx. The DOCSIS transponder signal feeds directly into Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS).

Problem Symptoms

The GainMaker 4-Port Node functions properly with either the old printed circuit board (PCB) or the new PCB. There is the possibility that a DOCSIS transponder will not communicate with the CMTS when the reverse signals are combined at the output of the reverse receiver (refer to Figures 2 and 3). This possible loss of communication is due to a corrupted transponder signal that prevents recognition of the transponder by the CMTS. 

If the GainMaker 4-Port Node has a manufacture date code earlier than May 1, 2013, the OIB is the 'old' version. 

If the GainMaker 4-Port Node has a manufacture date code of May 1, 2013 or later, the OIB is the 'new' version. 

Workaround/Solution

The new OIB PCB has an attenuator pad that enables termination of one of the paths from the DOCSIS transponder to the reverse Tx. This allows only one transponder signal to be sent back to the CMTS when the node is configured for reverse segmentation and the signals are combined at the output of the reverse receiver.  

Customers have four options available to them to ensure communication between the DOCSIS transponder and the CMTS: 

  1. If the date range on the GainMaker 4-Port Node is May 1, 2013 or later, no action is required. The new OIB part is already installed.
  2. Do not combine the signal that comes out of the Prisma II Receiver (as noted in Figures 2 and 3).
  3. When DOCSIS transponders are installed in the GainMaker 4-Port Nodes prior to May 1, 2013, install the new OIB kit (partnumber 4056143) also. Customers can utilize the GainMaker 4-Port Node Installation and Operation Guide (partnumber 4031676) to update their units.
  4. Return the GainMaker 4-Port Node via a Return Material Authorization (RMA).

New OIBs can be identified by a 75 Ohm yellow pad. Refer to Figure 4 for an example and correct placement of the OIB within the node.
