Problem Description

15600-TSC loaded with SW R9.1 and greater can cause outage in 15600 systems running R6.0 to R9.0.x.

Background

The problem is caused by bug (CSCtr48955). There is an inconsistency between software releases 6.0 to 9.0.x and R9.x in exchanging "sync-up" messages during "initialization." This causes 15600-TSC running R9.1 or greater to take over as Active when inserted into the STDBY card slot on systems running software releases 6.0-9.0.x which causes database loss.

Problem Symptom

Network outage due to a newly inserted standby 15600-TSC (running R9.1 or greater) in a 15600 system running R6.0 - R9.0.x.

Workaround/Solution

For 15600 systems running R6.0-9.0.x, do not insert any 15600-TSC that has SW R9.1 or greater loaded on it into the Standby slot. Some 15600-TSC cards were shipped to customers with SW R9.1 pre-loaded on them. Cisco recommends customers do one of the following:

Check hardware serial numbers against the serial number validation tools provided in this field notice.

Check the software loaded on the card by plugging the 15600-TSC into a system not carrying any network traffic and if necessary down rev the 15600-TSC to R9.0 or lower.

How To Identify Affected Products

Customers can compare their hardware serial number against the serial number validation tool provided with this field notice or a use a 15600 system not carrying any network traffic to check the software release on the card. If the serial number validation tool indicated that the customer's hardware is affected or the inventory check in CTC reveals that SW R9.1 or greater is loaded on the card, Cisco recommends that you contact your account team for the best option to downgrade the 15600-TSC to SW R9.0 or lower.

To determine the serial number of your line cards:

Open Cisco Transport Controller.
From the Shelf View, choose Inventory.
From the Inventory tab, locate the line card in question and compare the information from the Inventory tab. Compare the serial numbers against the serial number validation tool provided.

Compare the information from the TL1 inventory command against the serial number validation tool provided.

A serial number validation tool has been provided so customers can easily check their hardware's serial number to identify affected units.
