Problem Description

Random failures of the flash drive on the 15600-TSC card have been detected. This failure has been root caused to a firmware issue on the flash drive of a limited number of 15600-TSC cards. This issue will eventually render the flash drive inoperable and can lead to a network traffic outage.

Background

A flash drive random failure has been identified on ONS15600 TSC. The flash drive was found nonoperational with no communication to the host controller. The flash drive vendor isolated the root cause to corruption of the drive's data due to defective firmware.

Problem Symptoms

Customers might see the following types of alarms:

  • DATABASE OUT OF SYNC
  • BACKUP MEMORY FAIL
  • EQUIPMENT BOOT

Or they might experience loss of traffic.

Workaround/Solution

No workaround process/procedure for this issue has been identified. Customers are requested to check their hardware against the serial number validation tool provided in this field notice. Once the hardware has been validated as affected, Cisco recommends replacement.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

Customers can compare their hardware serial number against the serial number validation tool provided with this field notice. If the serial number validation tool indicates that the customer's hardware is affected, Cisco recommends replacement.

To determine the serial number of your line cards, complete one of these tasks:

  • Visually inspect the serial number of the card.
  • Use Cisco Transport Controller as described below:
    1. Open Cisco Transport Controller.
    2. From the Shelf View, click the Inventory tab.
    3. From the Inventory tab, locate the line card in question, and compare the information from the Inventory tab.
    4. Compare the serial numbers against the serial number validation tool provided.

If you are using TL1 commands, complete these steps:

  1. >ACT-USER::
  2. >RTRV-INV::ALL
  3. >CANC-USER::

Compare the information from the TL1 inventory command against the serial number validation tool provided.

A serial number validation tool is provided so customers can easily check the serial number of their hardware to identify affected units:
