Problem Description

Some MDS 9124 and MDS 9148 units produced between Feb 13, 2011 and April 29, 2011 were programmed with incorrect MAC addresses.

Background

The Cisco FMS software is currently dependent upon the OUI of the MAC address to recognize equipment as a Cisco device. The affected systems were programmed with an OUI of "64:00:f1".

Problem Symptoms

Cisco Fabric Manager and other protocols will not recognize a switch with an OUI of "64:00:f1" as a Cisco switch.

A switch with an incorrect OUI will have the following issues:

  1. Traps will not be registered.
  2. The switch will not be monitored or discovered properly.
  3. Performance Manager will not collect stats from the switch.
  4. The switch will not be included in various wizards including FCIP, Security Wizard, Upgrade wizard and the IOA wizard.
The first 3 bytes of the MAC address are the OUI.

Customers can identify if their switch is effected by issuing the command "show sprom backplane 1 | include "MAC Address". Look at the first 3 bytes of the MAC address to see if your device is affected.
switch# show sprom backplane 1 | include "MAC Address"
MAC Addresses : 64-00-f1-01-ca-b2

Workaround/Solution

Replace the affected hardware.

As of approximately May 1, 2011 new products are guaranteed to be free of this problem. Refer to "How to Identify Hardware Levels" below for instructions on how to view the version and deviation of in-service product.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

As of May 1, 2011 new products that were manufactured should be free of this problem.

To determine if your system is affected issue the command show sprom backplane 1 | include "MAC Address"

For example:

switch# show sprom backplane 1 | include "MAC Address"
MAC Addresses : 64-00-f1-01-ca-b2
If the first 6 hexidecimal values (bold in the example) are "64-00-f1", your system is impacted. As a verification you can also Check the Serial Number .
If your system is affected, request replacement by filling the Upgrade form at end of this Field Notice.
