Problem Description

Cisco Unity can experience a Service Outage when it runs out of disk space due to excessive SQL Logging.

Background

On any version of Cisco Unity that runs SQL 2000, Cisco Unity 4.x through Cisco Unity 7.x, the TempLog.ldf, which is located in the \MSSQL\Data\directory, can grow very large and fill the available disk space. This is due to a known Microsoft SQL defect.

Problem Symptoms

The TempLog.ldf file can grow sufficiently large and fill disk space. SQL/MSDE is not able to write to the log and causes a service outage.

Workaround/Solution

Install SQL 8.00.2187 or later on ALL Cisco Unity systems in your network. Even systems that do not currently exhibit this behavior can demonstrate it in the future.

The fix is contained in SQL build 8.00.2187, which can be applied through the Server Updates Wizard (SUW).

Run SUW version 2.0(9) or later on the Cisco Unity server. These install SQL 8.00.2187.

Refer to Server Updates Wizard (SUW) Documentation for more information on SUW, as well as download locations.

The latest SUW is 2.0(12) available at Download SUW 2.0(12) (registered customers only).

Additional Best Practice Recommendation

It is important to update both Microsoft and Cisco patches on a regular basis. This helps prevent the appearance of known issues, such as the one described in this notice.
