Problem Description

The Cisco 7600 chassis with redundant supervisor cards running the 12.2(33)SRC2 IOS release and a NAM service blade may encounter an error condition. In this configuration a sequential boot of the two engines will result in the secondary (standby) supervisor not going into proper standby mode. Booting the engines in parallel will not trigger this error condition. There is also no such error condition with this configuration running 12.2(33)SRC1.

Background

An incompatibility exists with the 12.2SRC2 image on the Cisco 7600 Series router with the NAM-1 and NAM-2.

The incompatibility occurs with the Cisco 7600 chassis that has redundant supervisor cards running the 12.2(33)SRC2 release and a NAM service module. An error occurs when the primary supervisor boots first, and before it reaches the simplex mode, the secondary (standby) supervisor that was in ROMMON mode starts to boot also. The secondary (standby) supervisor will not go into proper standby mode, finally leaving the chassis in Route Processor Redundancy (RPR) mode.

When both supervisors are booted simultaneously, both supervisors will boot up, and put the chassis in an ideal Stateful Switchover (SSO) mode. The primary supervisor will reboot when issued the redun force-switchover command, which causes the redundant supervisor to boot up to be the primary and the primary to be the redundant.

This problem does not occur when the Cisco 7600 router runs the 12.2SRC1 image.

Problem Symptoms

When the primary supervisor functions as a standalone with the secondary supervisor card in RPR mode, the Cisco 7600 chassis functions normally (as if it has a standalone supervisor card). A switchover causes the system to be unavailable for up to three minutes because the secondary supervisor card is not in proper standby mode.

Workaround/Solution

There are two workarounds and one solution currently in place to address this issue:

Workaround using IOS 12.2SRC2 image:
1. Boot up the two supervisor cards simultaneously until the chassis reaches SSO mode.

Or:

2. Boot up the primary supervisor card first, until it reaches simplex mode, and then start to boot up the secondary supervisor card. This will bring the chassis to SSO mode.

Temporary Solution until 12.2SRC3 available:
Downgrade the IOS image from 12.2SRC2 to 12.2SRC1.

This problem will be fixed in 12.2SRC3, which is targeted to be released in mid January, 2009. When image 12.2SRC3 is available, upgrade the image from 12.2SRC1/12.2SRC2 to 12.2SRC3 at your earliest opportunity.
