Problem Description

The bootflash in specific Cisco routers may exhibit a defect, resulting in a timing error, which could cause a boot failure from ROMmon. Cisco is providing a ROM Monitor (ROMmon) update that resolves this scenario.

Expected failure rate at room temperature is 1.4 percent.

Background

A new bootflash device for the C3800 ROMmon was introduced resulting in timing error causing ROMmon boot failures. The new ROMmon has an increased erase time. New ROMmon code was developed to work with this increased erase time.

Problem Symptoms

Cisco 3800 fails to boot up and the following error is seen on the console log:

System Bootstrap, Version 12.4(13r)T, RELEASE SOFTWARE(fc1)
Technical Support: http://www.cisco.com/techsupport
Copyright (c) 2006 by cisco Systems, Inc.

Rommon primary and backup variables are invalid...

Warning: monitor nvram area is corrupt ... using default values

amd_flash_cmd: timeout on erase sector command
environment checksum failed

amd_flash_cmd: timeout on erase sector command
environment checksum failed

Workaround/Solution

New ROMmon code has been released that is compatible to the longer erase time introduced. It can be down loaded from Cisco.com/Support/Download Software by customers with access to Software Downloads.

Scroll down to the Cisco ROMMON Upgrade heading, follow the "3800 Platform" link and select 12.4(13r)T10.

The link is below:

========= ROMmon Upgrade Procedure =========

1. Locate the new rommon: /tftpboot/images/STI/release_1

2. Configure router to connect to TFTP server, make sure TFTP server can be pinged.

3. Collect the ROMmon info before the upgrade by issuing the show rom-monitor under IOS.

4. Upgrade the secondary ROMmon with the upgrade rom-monitor file tftp://... command under IOS

5. After the upgrade, the router will be reloaded automatically. If the config register is 0x0, then the router will go to the ROMmon prompt. Otherwise, the router will boot to IOS and go to the router prompt.

6. After the upgrade, the new ROMmon in secondary ROMmon will be automatically set to current ROMmon. You can verify the upgrade result by
issuing the showmon command at the ROMmon prompt or the show rom-monitor command in IOS.

7. If the new ROMmon failed to work, then you need to use the readonly ROMmon. You can specify readonly as current ROMmon by
issuing the rommon-pref readonly command at the ROMmon prompt or the upgrade rom-monitor preference readonly command in IOS.

8. You also can backup secondary ROMmon to the prior version you collected in step 3 by following the same procedure in 2-4 with the prior version ROMmon. You need to copy the prior version ROMmon to a tftp directory.

As of approximately July 29, 2008 new products that were manufactured under deviation D097818 are guaranteed to be free of this problem.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

Please use the Cisco Serial Number Validation Tool to see if your product is affected. Issue the sh hard IOS command to view the product serial number remotely.

Serial Numbers in the tool are affected by this unless the ROMmon upgrade has been applied.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
