Problem Description

If a relative battery voltage difference exists between battery A (BATA) and battery B (BATB), an improper removal alarm maybe generated while removing and re-inserting the higher voltage battery and ultimately cause the cards to reboot. A relative battery voltage difference of 4V or greater can trigger this event. Other triggering events of the card reboot with improper removal alarm generation are surges and high speed voltage transient on the power supply rail.

Background

This field notice is being issued to aid in diagnosing field events only. If there is maintenance work on the power to a node, and cards reset, this FN may be used to check the card serial numbers to confirm the root cause for reset. No recall or replacement of hardware is required.

This issue has been root caused to the in-rush circuit complex and more specifically, to the in-rush current controller device. A voltage step on the input of the current controller of greater than 4V will produce a main DC/DC converter restart resulting in resetting the card. A modification to correct this issue has been identified by engineering.

The number of occurrences seen in the field due to this issue is very low since December 2006.

Problem Symptoms

The problem symptom includes experiencing a card reboot while BATTERY A/B is being removed or installed, or when a pulse surge or a high speed voltage transient is applied to the input power.

Workaround/Solution

When possible, use maintenance windows to work on the system to upgrade the node with system card replacements.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

All hardware potentially impacted by this issue are listed by part number and serial number in this field notice. To determine the part and serial number of your effected hardware:

Open Cisco Transport Controller, or Cisco Transport Manager:
From the Shelf View, select Inventory
From the Inventory tab, locate the potentially effected cards and compare the information from the Inventory tab against the Products Affected section.

If you are using TL1 commands.
1. >ACT-USER::
2. >RTRV-INV::ALL
3. >CANC-USER::

Compare the information from the TL1 inventory command against the products affected section above.
The serial number of the hardware can also be checked against the serial number validation tool here:
