The PRE2 backplane ethernet port may fail due to transceiver sub-component failure. This affects PRE2's from the serial number set provided (built between November 2005 and March 2006) when used in either ESR or uBR10k platforms. Symptoms may include unexpected PRE2 reboot, or loss of connectivity to line cards from the PRE2.
A sub-component of one of the Ethernet transceiver modules for the ESR-PRE2 may fail prematurely under normal field use. The transceiver module was first used in November of 2005 and was phased out after March 2006 as part of an unrelated Reduction of Hazardous Substances project. The only part number version to use this component was 800-08916-16. PRE2 engines with earlier (-15) or later (-17) part numbers are not affected.
Subsequently, the early failure of the transceiver module was noted in the field, leading to a defect root cause.
Affected PRE2 boards may either reboot repeatedly without toggling to standby PRE2 or exhibit a loss of connectivity to the backplane Ethernet and installed line cards.
Note: A failed board may briefly recover after reinsertion, however the board will fail again with extended use. Do not continue to use the board once crash files (if any) are recovered.
Although an upgrade program had previously been provided to replace potentially affected but otherwise working product, the upgrade program is now over and Cisco will only replace product which has actually failed. The standard RMA process should be used to replace failed product.
Note: Products that fall within the affected serial number range are not affected by this problem if they have ECO E091409 applied.
How To Identify Hardware Levels
Note: Units upgraded by Cisco Service Repair will show a top assembly revision level of -F0 (800-08916-16, -F0), indicating that the suspect transceiver was replaced and the unit re-tested.
