Problem Description

Some CVPN3020 units may experience software crashes or hangs where the unit reboots or becomes unresponsive to traffic and console activity.

Background

The CVPN3020 platform has experienced a number of field Return Material Authorizations (RMAs). Engineering analysis of the crash and hang scenarios could not point to a software or hardware defect as a root cause. Lab experimentation discovered that returned units that reproduced the failure conditions could possibly be repaired by replacing the single 256MB DIMM with two matching 256MB DIMMs to bring the memory up to 512MB.

Problem Symptoms

Mutiliple field behaviors have resulted in CVPN3020 RMAs. Each of these behaviors has been shown to be resolved by adding 256MB of additional memory.

1. Full system hang - No traffic passing, console unresponsive even to a ctrl-p interrupt

2. Crashing - typical dump output is listed below:

Address function file:line
00000000 ?? ??:0
FFFFFFFC ?? ??:0
0055F418 ewsSendHeader ews_send.c:359
0056046C ewsSendHeaderAndEnd ews_send.c:1186

0055CBDC ewsParse ews_pars.c:820
0055523C ewsRun ews.c:450

3. The following event message is frequently displayed:

26731 04/20/2006 00:13:29.700 SEV=3 SYSTEM/11 RPT=39 Freeing corrupted memory block.
Ptr=05d10a80, CPC1=0005bdac, CPC2=00530f6c, TID=00480000, Size=20 Possible Reason=Signature 2 is bad (memory block size may have been too small)

4. On software versions 4.7.2.F and later, the console port would hang, but could still be interrupted by a ctrl-p input.

Workaround/Solution

If the above behavior is encountered, an additional 256MB DIMM is required.

As of approximately September 10, 2006, new CVPN3020s that were manufactured under Engineering Change Order (ECO) E086567 are guaranteed to have additional 256MB memory, for a total of 512MB memory. Refer to How to Identify Hardware Levels below for instructions on how to view the version of in-service product.

This program will expire April 2008.

DDTS

To follow the bug ID link below and see detailed bug information, you must be a registered customer and you must be logged in.

DDTS Description
CSCsd39416 (registered customers only) 3020s with 256 MB RAM will sometimes hang.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

To determine whether your unit is affected, check the System Status on your CVPN3020 via the html management interface. If the RAM size is 256MB, the unit could have this problem.
