Serial Numbers

The list of Serial Numbers affected by this problem is at the following link: Serial Number List

Depending on browsers and browser settings, a pop-up window may open. If a pop-up window is shown, it will look like the one shown below. In this case, select "Anonymous" and hit Enter without entering anything in the Password box. A spreadsheet will open in Excel.

Problem Description

The switch may experience an early-life failure due to a suspected faulty power supply used in certain serial numbers of the switches listed in the Products Affected Section of this Field Notice. The switch will stop functioning if this problem occurs.

Background

Only those switches with matching Serial Number of the switch and Serial Number of the power supply are affected by this issue.

  • For the list of affected switch Serial Numbers, follow the link in the Serial Numbers section.
  • Only those power supplies with the prefix PAJ in the Serial Number are affected.

Refer to the How to Identify Hardware Levels section for an example of a show command output from an affected switch.

Problem Symptoms

The switch stops functioning, as if the power source were removed from the unit.

Workaround/Solution

Workaround
There is no workaround for this problem.

Solution
The solution is to replace the affected switches. Please process a standard Return Material Authorization (RMA) to replace the affected switches.

Note

  • Ensure that you take out the SFP modules before returning the defective product.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

In this case, two criteria need to be identified: Switch Serial Number and Power Supply Serial Number.

The Switch's System Serial Numbers can be found on:

a) The packout box.
b) The back of the switch.
c) The show version command output. If the switch is already installed in a network, telnet to unit or connect directly to the switch console, then issue the show version command and reference the System Serial Number and Power Supply Serial Number.

Below is an example of the output of the show version command of an affected switch:

switch#show version
Motherboard assembly number : 73-9298-01
Power supply part number : 341-0029-03
Motherboard serial number : CAT08040BT0
Power supply serial number : PAJ091100Z1 <-- Affected Power supply Serial Number starts with "PAJ"
Model revision number : D0
Motherboard revision number : C0
Model number : WS-C3560G-48PS-E
System serial number : FOC0917U0U4 <-- Switch Serial Number is on the affected SN list
SFP Module assembly part number : 73-7757-02
SFP Module revision Number : A0
SFP Module serial number : CAT080406N0
Top Assembly Part Number : 800-26351-02
