Problem Description

Use of the world-mode legacy command in Aironet Access Points running IOS is a mis-configuration if the client devices are configured to comply with IEEE 802.11d. The legacy mode is only intended to be used with Cisco Aironet 350/CB20A NIC adapters running earlier versions of software.

Some non-legacy wireless client cards may not be able to associate or may not be able to maintain connections with IOS Aironet Access Points if the command world-mode legacy is configured.

Background

The world-mode legacy command is only useful for Cisco Aironet 350/CB20 NICs with earlier software versions. Later Aironet 350/CB20 client releases can operate with either the legacy or the 11d variant.

Other vendors cards might have trouble of association if this command is used. All other clients will not and are not expected to differentiate between the World-mode legacy setting and 802.11d since the legacy setting is a Cisco only feature. See the statement above.

The world-mode command was first introduced in Cisco IOS® Software Version 12.2(4)JA

Problem Symptoms

Some non-legacy wireless client cards will not be able to associate with IOS Aironet access point if world-mode legacy is configured.

Workaround/Solution

To ensure both legacy and 11d capability, Cisco Aironet 350 client card needs to be version 5.30.17 and later.

For Access Point configuration: Use the World-mode dot11d country indoor command instead of world-mode legacy or disable World Mode.

To support 802.11d world mode, the Access Point must be running Cisco IOS version 12.2(4)JA or later.
