Problem Description

When upgrading the 15454 to Software version R7.0 or later, the 15454-DM-L1-xx.x, 15454-DMP-L1-xx.x will experience a traffic impacting outage in the range of ~10 seconds on all circuits mapped through these cards. This issue is due to a required update of the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) image required to address the DDTS's listed in this Field Notice.

Note: If the 2.5G Datamuxponders (15454-DM-L1-xx.x only) are included in a Y-cable protection group, a software mechnism will upgrade the FPGA images asyncronously without impact to Gigabit Ethernet (GE) traffic. However, Fiber Channel (FC) traffic will be impacted as the new FPGA images are activated. All traffic through the 15454-DMP-L1-xx.x will be impacted.

Background

The FPGA on the 2.5G Datamuxponder is used to perform GFP-T mapping and Ethernet/Fiber Channel (FC) Performance Monitoring (PM) and management. When updating an FPGA within the datapath, a reset of the card is necessary to activate the new FPGA image.

Problem Symptoms

The software upgrade process of the 15454 is based on a NEtwork (NE) release concept whereby all cards belonging to an NE will be upgraded to the appropriate release images. Due to an upgrade to the 2.5G Datamuxponder FPGA image within the card's datapath, customers will experience a traffic outage of ~10 seconds when upgrading to NE Software R7.0 or later.

Workaround/Solution

There is no workaround for this issue.

If the 2.5G Datamuxponders are included in a Y-cable protection group a software mechnism will upgrade the FPGA images asyncronously without impact to Gigabit Ethernet (GE) traffic, however Fiber Channel (FC) traffic will be impacted as the new FPGA images are activated.

It is recommended that customers perform this traffic impacting software upgrade during a scheduled maintenance window.
