Problem Description

There is a potential for the Content Engine CE-510A-160GB-K9, CE-510A-80GB-K9, CE-565A-144GB-K9, CE-565A-72GB-K9 and IPTV-3426-BCAST running POST/BIOS Flash CD Version PLCJ52A and Content Engine CE-7305A-DC-K9, CE-7305A-K9, CE-7325A-DC-K9, CE-7325A-K9 and IPTV-3427-BCAST-C1, IPTV-3427-BCAST-C2 and IPTV-3427-BCAST-C3 running POST/BIOS Flash CD Version GEJC07A to hang.

Background

Long term reliability testing done by our OEM supplier has indicated that there is a potential to experience a system hang when Content Engines are operated at an elevated temperature and supply voltage (Vcc) and have an operating time of one year or longer.

To date no failures have occurred outside of long term reliability testing. However, if this were to be experienced by an End User, the system would hang and require that the unit be power cycled.

Implement the processor BIOS code fix through the following BIOS versions:

CEs 510, 565 and IP/TV 3426 BIOS version - Down load code ID: PLJC53A - sh hardware: PLEC53AUS-C.53

CEs 7305, 7325 and IP/TV 3427 BIOS version - Down load code ID: GEJC09A - sh hardware: GEEC10AUS-1.07

These new BIOS versions have been tested and approved by Cisco engineering.

The New BIOS on CEs 7305, 7325 and IP/TV 3427 systems also includes updated SCSI controller firmware and all 74 part numbers of the affected systems have been versioned from -01 to -02 for traceability.

This BIOS flash image update contains an errata patch for the microprocessor firmware that addresses a potential issue which might cause a system to exhibit erratic behavior. Behavior exhibited can not be reliably predicted across systems. If encountered, some of the potential symptoms may result in a system hang, reboot, blue screen or Kernel Panic (Linux). Also, similar to other microprocessor failures the potential exists, but highly unlikely, the problem could result in data corruption. It is strongly recommended to install this update as soon as possible to prevent the possibility of the issues listed above.

If encountered, some of the potential symptoms may result in a system hang, reboot, blue screen or Kernel Panic (Linux). Also, similar to other microprocessor failures the potential exists, but highly unlikely, the problem could result in data corruption.

Workaround/Solution

Upgrade your Cisco Content Engines POST/BIOS Flash CD to the most current version.

For the latest Content Engine CE-510A-160GB-K9, CE-510A-80GB-K9, CE-565A-144GB-K9, CE-565A-72GB-K9 and IPTV-3426-BCAST POST/BIOS Flash CD Version PLCJ52A:

  1. Go to Special File Access:

    https://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Software/SFA/sfa.cgi

  2. Enter the password "T253ABIOS" (no quotes, case sensitive) and click Submit.

For the latest Content Engine CE-7305A-DC-K9, CE-7305A-K9, CE-7325A-DC-K9, CE-7325A-K9 and IPTV-3427-BCAST-C1, IPTV-3427-BCAST-C2 and IPTV-3427-BCAST-C3 POST/BIOS Flash CD Version GEJC10ACE:

  1. Go to Special File Access:

    https://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Software/SFA/sfa.cgi

  2. Enter the password "L210ABIOS" (no quotes, case sensitive) and click Submit.

Download and Installation proceedures are also located in the special file access location.

As of approximately March 18, 2005 new products that were manufactured under Engineering Change Order (ECO) E079037 are guaranteed to be free of this problem.

Product shipped from Service Logistics may still exhibit this problem. To ensure an RMA replacement is NOT affected by this problem, request an RMA coded as shown below:

Service Level: Mfg New - 3rd Bus Day NON BILLABLE
Failure Class: Administrative Request
Failure Code: Field Notice Alert

Note: Replacements fulfilled through this process typically take 3 business days or more to arrive on-site, therefore service level agreements do not apply to RMAs coded as shown above.
