Compact Flash has the potential to fail if formatted with earlier versions of IOS (earlier then 12.2(13)T)

Problem Description

Cisco 7401 routers may experience intermittent boot failures when booting from the Slot0 compact flash using certain 64 MB and 128 MB Compact Flash devices.

Background

Before using a Compact Flash in a Cisco 7401 router, the CF must be formatted using the following command format disk0: In the format process a hidden file is placed on the CF device. This hidden file contains functions which are used by ROMMON to read the IOS image into the router's memory during the boot process. When the CF is formatted using older versions of IOS the timer functions within the hidden file do not always allow sufficient delay time for the CF device to respond to the boot read request. If the wait response delay is too short then the router fails to complete the IOS boot load.

Problem Symptoms

A boot failure mode has been observed on Cisco 7401 routers. The problem can occur when booting from a CF device that has been formatted with earlier versions of Cisco IOS Software. There is no specific boot failure pattern and the problem is intermittent. If and when the router fails to boot, a loadprog error message will be displayed at the console and the prompt will return to ROMMON.

loadprog: error - on load of image from file system with monlib
boot: cannot load "disk0:c7400-is-mz.122-16.5.T"
rommon 2 >

Workaround/Solution

TThe work around is to format the Compact Flash with IOS image12.2(13)T or newer. Then copy the IOS image that you would like to boot from back onto the Compact Flash. All 7401 12.2(13)T and later images contain the IOS fix which eliminates the boot failure problem.
