Problem Description

A manufacturing quality issue has been discovered with a component used on the 8 port and 16 port FXS modules used in the Cisco IAD2421, IAD2423, and IAD2428 Integrated Access Devices.

Units that were manufactured with an Infineon DuSLIC component with a date code of 0320 or earlier may be suspect and could fail within the first 30 days of voice functionality activation. If the unit's FXS ports have been enabled and functioning for a period longer than 30 days, the risk is minimized and you should not encounter any functional issues.

Units manufactured with DuSLIC components with date code 0322 and later are not affected.

Background

During the chip manufacturing, an etching process step may not have completed sufficiently. As a result, the component can prematurely fail within the first 30 days of use. If the component does not fail within the first 30 days of use, it is not expected to fail due to this issue.

As a proactive measure, Cisco has purged its inventory of these components and will re-work inventory built with these suspect components.

Cisco Service Logistics and Cisco Depots will re-work existing inventory. Customers experiencing their 8 and 16 FXS ports failing within the first 30 days of voice functionality activation will need to open a TAC case and request a Return Material Authorization (RMA).

Problem Symptoms

Problem symptoms include voice quality and/or dead voice ports after voice functionality activation within 30 days.

The data ports are not affected and will function as normal with no performance impact.

Workaround/Solution

There is no current workaround for this quality issue. Customers experiencing their 8 and 16 FXS ports failing within the first 30 days of voice functionality activation will need to open a TAC case and request a Return Material Authorization (RMA).

At this time Cisco has purged its inventory of the specified date code from manufacturing.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

To verify the date code of the DuSLIC, remove the top (FXO) daughterboard and then remove the FXS daughterboard (73-5751-03 for 8FXS, and 73-6810-02 for 16FXS) and read DuSLIC chip date codes on the underside of the FXS daughterboard.

DuSLIC PEB3265H chips with date code 0320 and earlier may be affected.

On 8FXS daughterboards, reference designators include: U1004, U1104, U1204, U1304

On 16FXS daughterboards, reference designators include U1004, U1104, U1204, U1304, U1404, U1504, U1604, U1704.

Note: Checking the date code is a time consuming process and requires removing the chassis from the rack mount, opening the cover, unscrewing the daughter card and checking the date code on the underside. If the unit has had the voice ports activiated and working for more than 30 days without failure, you are not affected by this issue.
