Problem Description

When a Distributed Forwarding Card (DFC) is mounted to a WS-X6516A-GBIC linecard with Manufacturing Assembly Number (Part Number) 73-9052-01, there is a chance that components on the bottom side of the DFC may be damaged by a heat sink on the WS-X6516A-GBIC.

Background

WS-X6516A-GBIC linecards with Manufacturing Assembly Number (Part Number) 73-9052-01 were built with a heat sink which exceeds the allotted height requirements for its location.

Problem Symptoms

Due to the nature of the defect, problem symptoms will vary.

Workaround/Solution

How To Obtain Replacement Parts

As of June 14, 2004, new products which were manufactured under Engineering Change Order (ECO) E078197 are guaranteed to be free of this problem. There was originally an Upgrade Program which expired on July 2005. If you are in possession of an affected WS-X6516A-GBIC linecard, please go through a standard RMA process.

Note: Any DFC daughterboards damaged by a defective WS-X6516A-GBIC should be replaced through the standard RMA process.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

Affected WS-X6516A-GBIC linecards will have a Manufacturing Assembly Number (Part Number) of 73-9052-01. For linecards which are already installed in a system, the Manufacturing Assembly Number or Part Number can be acquired by issuing one of the following commands:
