Field Notice: Concerns When Using 7304-NPE-G100 With Cisco IOS Releases Later Than 12.2(20)S2

Problem Description

The 7304-NPE-G100 may encounter fatal errors during the boot sequence, caused by timing variables built into the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) core. New FPGA firmware has been provided by the FPGA supplier to rectify the timing issue. All boards shipped new from Cisco Manufacturing will contain the updated FPGA firmware loaded onto the 7304-NPE-G100. These FPGA improvements have also been incorporated into the Cisco IOS® Software Release 12.2(20)S2. These improvements offer increased reliability for the 7304-NPE-G100 during the boot sequence.

Note:?

  1. To date these errors have only been encountered in Cisco's test facilities. There have not been any reported field failures caused by this problem.

  2. The errors mentioned above do not affect the 7304-NSE-100.

Background

When the 7304-NPE-G100 was released, according to the FPGA supplier's boards specification the FPGA had a lower PLL lock window time value. It was noted in testing that some components were operating outside the phase lock loop (PLL) lock window, causing unexpected fatal errors . The new FPGA image corrects this to a new recommended manufacturer value.

Problem Symptoms

There have been no reported field failures caused by this problem.

The following error was displayed on the console of the router during the IOS boot test.
