8-Port BRI Port Adapter, S/T Interface.

Problem Description

Older PA-8B-S/T port adapters are not compatible with Cisco 7204VXR or Cisco 7206VXR chassis shipped since January 25, 2004, due to a change in these chassis' Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) bridge component.

Background

Component end of sales caused the change of the PCI bridge component used on the 7204VXR and 7206VXR chassis. Most Port Adapters were not affected by this change. This field notice defines the conditions where the incompatibility is observed and what action to take should the user encounter the incompatibility.

7204VXR and 7206VXR chassis shipped before January 25, 2004 are not affected by this issue. Any version PA-8B-S/T may be installed and will operate normally.

PA-8B-S/T shipped from the factory after April 30, 2004 will operate in any 7204VXR or 7206VXR chassis equipped with either the new or old PCI bridge component.

The fix for this incompatibility is found in the new Top Assembly for the PA-8B-S/T : 800-02060-03 or later revisions and versions.

The fix is accomplished by changing firmware loaded on the PA-8B-S/T. The firmware cannot be changed in the field. If your PA-8B-S/T is not booting up due to the incompatibility discussed in this field notice, replace it.

Problem Symptoms

Some PA-8B-S/T will not come up in newer 7204VXR and 7206VXR.

Workaround/Solution

WorkAround: None

Solution: Replace the affected PA-8B-S/T using the RMA process. See the Field Repair section of this Field Notice shown below.

Note: If the PA-8B-S/T is operating normally, no action needs to be taken. This anomaly will not apply to currently functioning PA-8B-S/T.

Note: This issue is not manifested in any other chassis that supports the PA-8B-S/T.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

Use the command show diag slot# to view the hardware version of the PA-8B-S/T.

Router# show diag 1
BRI (S/T) Port adapter, 8 ports
Port adapter is analyzed
Port adapter insertion time 00:02:36 ago

FRU Part Number: PA-8B-S/T=

Note:  The show diag for the PA-8B-S/T does not display the Top Assembly Number (TAN) (800-02060-xx) but does display the 73-Assembly number. Use the 73- assembly number as the guide.

Field Repair Strategy

Cisco recommends a fix-on-fail strategy for this problem.

As of approximately April 30, 2004, new products that were manufactured under Engineering Change Order (ECO) E077708 are guaranteed to be free of this problem. Refer to the How to Identify Hardware Levels section above for instructions on how to view the version of in-service product. Product shipped from Service Logistics may still exhibit this problem. Coding RMAs as shown below guarantees a replacement which is not affected by this problem:

Service Level: Mfg New - 3rd Bus Day NON BILLABLE
Failure Class: Administrative Request
Failure Code: Field Notice Alert

Note: Service level agreements do not apply to RMAs coded as shown above. Until further notice, use the procedure and RMA codes defined above to replace defective PA-8B-S/T Port Adapters.
