Problem Description

After insertion of a PXM45/B or PXM45/C into the standby slot, the standby PXM45/B or PXM45/C fails. In addition, any AXSM-E or FRSM-12-T3E3 installed in the switch will not pass user traffic.

For the purposes of this field notice, AXSM-E refers to the Product IDs listed in the Products Affected section.

Background

There are certain necessary conditions for this problem to occur.

  1. The presence of an FRSM-12-T3E3 or any model AXSM-E in MGX.

  2. At least one FRSM-12-T3E3 or AXSME-E is not passing traffic.

  3. On-Line Diagnostics is not running on the idle FRSM-12-T3E3 or AXSM-E.

  4. Physical insertion of a Standby PXM45/B or PXM45/C into MGX.

Problem Symptoms

The standby PXM45/B or PXM45/C will go to "fail" mode after resetting.

The FRSM-12-T3E3 or AXSM-E cards will generate errors towards the fabric on the standby PXM45/B or PXM45/C. User traffic will be affected.

Workaround/Solution

Workaround:

For the FRSM-12-T3E3, there is no workaround.

Enable On-Line Diagnostics on any idle AXSM-E module. User must enable at least one line and port per bay in order to enable diagnostics on an idle AXSM-E. Note that AXSM-Es that are part of an APS or Y-redundancy pair already have lines and ports configured if the Active card is configured.

Enabling On-Line Diagnostics does not interfere with redundancy and can be enabled on standby cards without negative effects.

The command for enabling On-Line Diagnostics is cnfdiag [ ] . Refer to the 4.0 user guide at MGX 8850 (PXM1E/PXM45), MGX 8950, and MGX 8830 Command Reference, Release 4.

Recovery of affected PXM45/B, PXM45/C, FRSM-12-T3E3 or AXSM-E:

If the insertion of a standby PXM45/B or PXM45/C triggered this condition, take the following steps to recover the affected cards.

AXSM-E:

  1. Issue theresetcd command on the affected AXSM-E slot. If the problem is cleared, no further action needed. The syntax is resetcd [slot] . If the symptoms do not clear, go to step 2.

  2. Physically reseat the affected AXSM-E card. If the problem is cleared, no further action is needed. Otherwise, contact Cisco.

FRSM-12-T3E3:

  1. Issue the resetcd command on the affected FRSM-12-T3E3 slot. If the problem is cleared, no further action is needed. The syntax is resetcd [slot] . If the symptoms do not clear, go to step 2.

  2. Physically reseat the affected FRSM-12-T3E3 card. If the problem is cleared, no further action is needed. Otherwise, contact Cisco.

PXM45:

Reset the PXM45/B or PXM45/C or reseat the PXM45/B or PXM45/C to recover from failed state.

Solution:

Upgrade MGX software to later releases of 4.0.1x or to 5.0.00 or later 5.0 releases. Monitor CSCed94385 (registered customers only) for releases that fix this bug.
