Cisco Unified MeetingPlace

Field Notice: FA00223 - Windows Media Sound Quality is Much Lower Than Original WAV Format

May 26, 2004

Products Affected

MeetingPlace Web and earlier

Problem Description

Note: This Field Notice is a legacy Latitude Field Notice that has been converted to the Cisco format so the information would remain available to their customers.

MeetingPlace Web server first converts meeting recordings from MeetingPlace Voice format (MPV) to WAV format. This is done by using a Latitude utility [mpv2wav.exe]. After the WAV conversion is done, the MeetingPlace Web server then hands it off to the Windows Media encoder to convert it from WAV to WMA.

Newer versions of the Windows Media encoder (> expects WAV files to have sampling rates of 16bit or greater. However, MeetingPlace Web and below only produce 8bit sampling rate WAV files. Hence, when the WMA file is created, the sound quality is much lower than the original WAV file.

Problem Symptoms

Users will notice that the sound quality from Window Media is much lower than from the original WAV format.

This issue has been fixed in MeetingPlace Web and later.
