Problem Description

In the Cisco 12008 or 12012 routers using Engine 0 or 1 based line cards manufactured before 2002, upgrading Cisco IOS® Software to releases 12.0(23)S or later may generate MBUS-0-DOWNREV and MBUS-3-EEPROM error messages. This will force the Maintenance Bus (MBUS) agent for these older line cards to run from ROM, and can cause unpredictable problems with the line card.

Customers can continue to run these line cards with the agents initialized with ROM version 1.33, but environment monitor may not work as expected.

Background

After a Cisco IOS Software upgrade and during the boot up process the following error messages may appear which is an indication of this problem.

  • %MBUS-0-DOWNREV:MBUS agent in slot x running from ROM

  • %MBUS-3-EEPROM: Failed read EEPROM location 1 in slot x detecting bad h/w at startup

Note: This is not a hardware problem, but a software load issue that can be fixed by performing a forced download to the line card.

This problem has only been seen when customers have line cards running ROM version 1.33 and upgrade to Cisco IOS Release 12.0(23)S.

Customers can continue to use line cards with ROM version 1.33, but you will be asked to upgrade the version if problems are encountered.

Problem Symptoms

Cisco 12000 line cards running ROM version 1.33 may indicate error messages in the show version output after IOS has been upgraded to 12.0(23)S.

A show version output indicates: MBUS agent running from ROM in slot x; cannot upgrade. The x is the slot the card is inserted into.

Workaround/Solution

Cisco recommends a forced download which will eliminate any potential timing issues or other problems that may arise with the code running in ROM.

To force download to an older card, type the following commands:

  • test mbus download (slot) unicast

  • upgrade mbus-agent-rom slot (slot)
