Cisco CTE 1400 Series Content Transformation Engines

Field Notice: CTE-1400 and CTE-1450 Running Content Transformation Engine Software Version 2.7 Require License Keys for Features Starting March 1, 2003

February 24, 2003

Products Affected

  • CTE-1400

  • CTE-1450

Problem Description

The Content Transformation Engine (CTE) Software version 2.7 has a temporary default license key, which activates all features. The temporary default license key expires on March 1, 2003. After this date, the following features will be inoperable unless they are unlocked by a purchased license key: CTE-HTML (supports Windows CE devices), CTE-PALM (supports Palm OS devices), CTE-WAP (supports WAP enabled devices), and CTE-RIM (supports Blackberry devices from RIM).

Background

When the CTE product originally shipped in August 2001, all features were included and there were no license keys. In May 2002, the following four software feature sets were orderable: CTE-HTML (supports Windows CE devices), CTE-PALM (supports Palm OS devices), CTE-WAP (supports WAP enabled devices), and CTE-RIM (supports Blackberry devices from RIM). Starting on December 12th, 2002, product activation keys (PAKs) were sent to customers who ordered the above four feature sets. Until CTE Software Version 2.7, the software did not enforce the license keys. A default license key was installed in CTE version 2.7 that expires on March 1, 2003. Valid license keys must be installed before March 1, 2003 in order avoid losing current functionality.

Problem Symptoms

CTE-14xxs running version 2.7 after March 1, 2003, without a license key will not have access to following features sets: CTE-HTML, CTE-PALM, CTE-WAP, or CTE-RIM.

Workaround/Solution

If you received a PAK with your CTE, use the following procedure.

  1. Log into the CTE HTML interface by pointing your browser to https://(IP Address of CTE):(CTE Admin Port)

For details on using the CTE HTML admin interface, refer to Cisco Content Transformation Engine 1400 Configuration Note, Software Release 2.0

  2. From the main CTE HTML window, select the Administration tab from the top menu, and then the Uploads tab from the left menu.

  3. Select the option to display the MAC address (Host ID).

  4. Go to http://www.cisco.com. From there, click Technical Support > Software Center > Software Registration. Click CTE 1400 License Registration, which can be found under Internet Products.

  5. Enter your PAK and MAC address (Host ID) into the appropriate input boxes and complete the required information for registration. An email will be sent with further instructions and an attached license file.

For customers who have either not received a PAK, or purchased CTE (or additional features) before December 12, 2002, do the following:

If you are running CTE Version 2.5, upgrade to CTE Software Version 2.7. You must also upgrade Design Studio to version 2.7. This software can be found in the Software Center (registered customers only) .

Download the following files: CTEServerFullUpgrade-k9.2-7.zip (the hardware image) and CTEDesignStudio-k9.2-7.zip (the Design Studio).

If you are running version 1.16 or earlier, you must download CTE1400ServerISO-k9.2-7.zip and create a CD to upgrade CTE. This is a zipped version of the complete CTE Server image and is used to create a version 2.7 upgrade CD. To create an upgrade CD, download this zip image to a PC with a CD writer and then unzip the file. Use the CD writer software to write bootcd.iso to a CD. This CD can then be used to upgrade your CTE to version 2.7.

Note: Following the above procedure will require you to reset your existing CTE settings as they will be cleared.

  1. Log into the CTE HTML interface by pointing your browser to https://(IP Address of CTE):(CTE Admin Port)

For details on using the CTE HTML admin interface, refer to Cisco Content Transformation Engine 1400 Configuration Note, Software Release 2.0
