Problem Description

This field notice is issued to provide customers and Cisco support engineers with information on an improvement made to the connector type for the 64 pin "CHAMP"-type DS1/T1 interface connector to the Management Interface Connector (MIC) cards on the Cisco ONS 15327 product.

In August 2003, Cisco will offer the cable as a 180-degree/straight connector cable as follows:

  • 15327-AMP-WW-30=, (30 ft)

  • 15327-AMP-WW-50=, (50 ft)

  • 15327-AMP-WW-100=, (100 ft)

  • 15327-AMP-WW-250=, (250 ft)

Until August 2003 and for any low-profile applications, a 90-degree DS1/T1 cable and connector can be utilized.

The 90-degree DS1/T1 cable is not a product offered by Cisco. Customers must procure the cable and connector from a third party. Cisco provides the connector type specification details so that customers may procure the cables. A problem may exist if a customer procures the wrong type of cable.

Background

The following 15327 MIC cards have reached End of Life (EoL). These MICs are equipped with "bail loop"-type DS1 connectors and require a CHAMP #552276-1 connector and a 90-degree, angled shell housing #1-552496-1. These cards reached EoL in June 2002:

  • 15327-MIC-28-3-A

  • 15327-MIC-28-3-A=

  • 15327-MIC-28-3-B

  • 15327-MIC-28-3-B=

They will be replaced by the following MIC cards, which include a "screw down/lock"-type connector utilizing the 180-degree/straight cables or, for lower-profile applications, a CHAMP #552285-1 connector and 90-degree, angled shell housing #1-552496-1, or their functional equivalents. These cards will reach EoL in October 2003:

  • 15327-MIC-A-T

  • 15327-MIC-A-T=

  • 15327-MIC-B-T

  • 15327-MIC-B-T=

These will be replaced by new MIC cards, which include a "screw down/lock"-type DS1 connector; however, a slightly different 90-degree, angled DS1 connector is recommended and requires CHAMP #xxxxxx or equal and shell housing #xxxxxx, or their functional equivalents. They are as follows:

  • 15327-MIC-A-1-T

  • 15327-MIC-A-1-T=

  • 15327-MIC-B-1-T

  • 15327-MIC-B-1-T=

These newer design MIC cards utilize the 180-degree or straight cables. For lower-profile applications, a 90-degree connector may be used. For low-profile applications, customers can utilize either of the following cable assemblies, or their functional equivalents:

  • Alpine Electronics, the distributor for Amphenol: (408) 278-7171

    • GCA70 03006 RSE (30')

    • GCA70 03007 RSE (50')

    • GCA70 03008 RSE (100')

    • GCA70 03009 RSE (250')

  • Volex Inc.: (510) 360-5250

    • VLX979-30 (30')

    • VLX979-50 (50')

    • VLX979-100 (100')

    • VLX979-250 (250')

Note: The 90-degree angled connectors or cables utilized with previous-version MIC cards can interfere with the power connector on the newer or current-design MIC cards. Customers who are replacing an older-version MIC with a spare, new-version MIC and utilize the same or existing cables as used on the old MIC may need to remove the 90-degree shell housing and replace it with the 180-degree shell housing 552082-1 to avoid interference with the power connector.

Problem Symptoms

With the various types of connectors on the previous-design MIC cards, customers may intermingle MIC card types and spares; the appropriate DS1 connector/cable solution can vary for these different designs.

Some customers may have on hand the older-type MIC (for example, 15327-MIC-28-3-A). These older-type MICs with bail loop-type connectors require CHAMP connector #552276-1 and shell housing #1-552496-1, or their functional equivalents.

Some customers with the screw-down type must also determine if the connector requires CHAMP #552285-1 (for example, for 15328-MIC-A-T) or equal and shell housing #1-552496-1, 180-degree or straight connectors or cables, or 90-degree cable assemblies (for example, for 15327-MIC-A-1-T). See the Workaround/Solution section of this field notice.

If a customer is replacing an existing MIC of older design with the new MIC card or spare, the existing 90-degree DS1 connector or cable can interfere with the power connector. See the Workaround/Solution section.

Workaround/Solution

For the appropriate DS1 connectors or cables, the following should be noted:

Note: The 90-degree angled DS1 connectors or cables utilized with previous-version MIC cards can interfere with the power connector on the new MIC cards. Customers who are replacing an older-version MIC with a spare new-version MIC in an existing system with existing connectors or cables may need to remove the 90-degree shell housing and replace it with the 180-degree shell housing 552082-1 to avoid interference. This will result in the cable exiting the system at a 180-degree or straight angle and avoid reconnecting individual DS1s.

DS1 connector information/options for:

  • 15327-MIC-28-3-A

  • 15327-MIC-28-3-A=

  • 15327-MIC-28-3-B

  • 15327-MIC-28-3-B=

"Bail loop"-type DS1 connectors reached End of Sale, End of Life in June 2002. These require CHAMP #552276-1 and 90-degree angled shell housing #1-552496-1, or their functional equivalents.

DS1 connector information and options for:

  • 15327-MIC-A-T

  • 15327-MIC-A-T=

  • 15327-MIC-B-T

  • 15327-MIC-B-T=

"Screw down/lock"-type connectors reached End of Sale, End of Life in October 2003. Their options are:

  • Use the Cisco 180-degree or straight cables.

  • Or, for lower-profile applications, use the CHAMP #552285-1 connector and 90-degree, angled shell housing #1-552496-1, or their functional equivalents.

DS1 connector information and options for:

  • 15327-MIC-A-1-T

  • 15327-MIC-A-1-T=

  • 15327-MIC-B-1-T

  • 15327-MIC-B-1-T=

These are current-production designs. A "screw down/lock"-type DS1 connector, but slightly different 90-degree DS1 connector, is recommended. The options are:

  • Use the Cisco 180-degree or straight cables.

  • Use the connector CHAMP #552285-1 and 180-degree shell housing 552082-1.

  • For lower-profile applications, use a 90-degree, angled connector or cable assembly, Amphenol GCA70 03006 or Volex VLX979-30, or their functional equivalents. See the Background section of this field notice.
