Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CallManager)

Field Notice: CallManager Upgrade Changes the SQLsvc Password

Revised July 27, 2002

June 28, 2002

Products Affected

  • CallManager Version 3.1(4a)

  • CallManager Version 3.2(2a)

Problem Description

The CallManager Version 3.2(2a) and 3.1(4a) installation programs reset a background account password used for database replication and other CallManager communication processes. Design specifications call for unique encrypted passwords per Cisco CallManager cluster.

Background

The Cisco CallManager Version 3.2(2a) and 3.1(4a) installation applications were built with an undetected defect causing a common encrypted password to be applied to the SQLSvc account. This defect does not impact the upgrade process, but does introduce a common password throughout the customer base.

Problem Symptoms

Replication and other functions that rely on the SQLSvc service account may not work correctly throughout the cluster after an upgrade to CallManager Version 3.2(2a) or 3.1(4a). The SQLSvc accounts must be synchronized and identical on all servers within the Cisco CallManager cluster after the upgrade is completed.

Workaround/Solution

Cisco development is in the process of building Cisco CallManager release 3.2(2c) and 3.1(4b). This release will only contain a new installation process to reinstitute the unique and encrypted SQLSvc password per cluster. Customers that have already upgraded their system to version 3.2(2a) or 3.1(4a) do not need to upgrade to the version 3.2(2c) or 3.1(4b)releases. Instead, they should perform the following procedure.

Changing the SQLSvc account password is documented in the Cisco CallManager Installation and Upgrade documentation.

Perform the following steps to change the SQLSvc password:

  1. Choose Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.

  2. Choose the Users folder located in the following path: System Tools/Local Users & Groups. The users display in the main window.

  3. Right-click SQLSvc and choose Set Password.

  4. In the New Password and Confirm Password fields, enter the new password and click OK.

  5. A window confirms that the password changed successfully. Click OK.

  6. Click the Services icon located in Services and Applications. The services in Table 6 display in the main window.

After you change the password, you must restart the service.

    SQLServerAgent

A service dependency exists between this service and MSSQLServer.

    MSSQLServer

After you change the password, you must restart the service. Restarting MSSQLServer automatically restarts SQLServerAgent.

  7. Using Table 6 while you perform the procedure, right-click the service and choose Properties.

  8. Click the Log On tab.

  9. In the Password and Confirm Password fields, enter the same password that you entered in Step 4 and click OK.

  10. Restart the service, if necessary, by clicking the service and then clicking Restart.

  11. After you changed the password for all services in Table 6, close the Computer Management window.

  12. Choose Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Component Services.

  13. Choose the COM+Applications folder located in the following path: Component Services/Computers/My Computer. The applications display in the main window.

  14. Right-click DBL and choose Properties.

  15. Click the Identity tab.

  16. In the New Password and Confirm Password fields, enter the same password that you entered in Step 4 and click OK.

  17. Right-click DBL and choose Shut Down.

  18. Close the Computer Services window.

  19. Perform Step 1 through Step 18 on all servers in the cluster.
