CSS11506-2AC

A secondary Switch Control Module (SCM) (CSS5-SCM-2GE) installed in a CSS11506-2AC is currently not functioning properly. This issue affects only the CSS11506-2AC. The CSS11503-AC is unaffected because it supports only one SCM.

Problem Description

The WebNS version 5.10.0.01 for the CSS 11506 does not properly support the redundant SCM. Adding the redundant SCM to the system with this version of software can cause a CSS 11506 failure that would require the unit to be replaced.

Background

A defect has been identified in the operation of SCM Mastership with redundant SCMs installed in a system such that under some circumstances the system may fail. If the secondary SCM is installed in the CSS 11506, then the system may fail and not be able to boot. If this occurs, the CSS-11506-2AC will need to be replaced.

Problem Symptoms

If a CSS 11506 running WebNS 05.10.0.01 has two SCMs installed in the chassis, it may be susceptible to failure and be unable to boot after the failure occurs. At this time, the CSS 11506 should only run with one SCM in the chassis.

Workaround/Solution

If the CSS-11506-2AC is running WebNS 5.10.0.01 and has two SCMs, remove the second SCM, leaving only the SCM in the first slot. A fix for this defect has been identified and will be available in the first maintenance release of WebNS 5.10, which will be available soon.

If the CSS-11506-2AC is running WebNS 5.10.0.01 and has two SCMs, remove the second SCM, leaving only the SCM in the first slot. A fix for this defect has been integrated into maintenance release 5.10.1.02, available in the Software Center (registered customers only) on Cisco.com.

  2. Remove the secondary SCM.

  3. Boot the CSS11506.

  4. Upgrade the CSS11506 to version 5.10.1.02.

  5. Reboot with 5.10.1.02 as the primary boot file.

  6. Shut down the CSS11506.

  7. Remove the primary SCM.

  8. Add the SCM that was removed in step 2 into the primary slot.

  9. Upgrade to version 5.10.1.02.

  10. Reboot with 5.10.1.02 as the primary boot file.

  11. Shut down the CSS11506.

  12. At this point it is safe to boot the CSS11506 with both SCMs in the chassis.
