Problem Description

The center contact position or threading on the threaded reversed polarity threaded naval connector (RP-TNC) antenna connector may cause the antenna to not seat properly. This may result in poor electrical performance or a loose antenna.

Background

Plenum (metal cased) access points manufactured between August 19, 2001, and September 21, 2001, are affected. These units were shipped with incorrectly assembled antenna connectors.

The serial number correlates to the manufacturing date. For example, the serial number VDF0533xxxx indicates the following:

VDF

Identifies the manufacturing site location.

05

Calendar year of manufacture. 05 indicates the unit was manufactured in 2001.

33

Calendar week of manufacture. 33 indicates the week beginning August 13.

xxxx

Sequentially unique identifier.

Problem Symptoms

The antenna may not correctly attach to the connector. It may cross-thread and bind when attached to the RP-TNC connector. This would result in poor mechanical connectivity and potentially degraded power output.

Workaround/Solution

If the antenna will not mate properly with the antenna connector, the unit should be replaced using standard return materials authorization (RMA) process.

Units shipped with an Amphenol connector stamped with part number 31-5685 or "AT" on the barrel connector are affected.. This stamp is visible from the outside of the case, as seen in the picture below.

Note: Amphenol connectors stamped with deviation D027706 are exempt. Radiall connectors printed with "AT" on the barrel are also exempt (see picture below). Radiall connectors have a smoother finish than the Amphenol connectors.
