Problem Description

The Cisco Catalyst 4000 WS-X4013 supervisor II engine can hang during an upgrade from Catalyst OS (CatOS) software release 5.4(2) to the following releases:

  • 5.4(3)

  • 5.5(1) through 5.5(6)

  • 6.1(1)

  • 6.1(2)

Resetting the switch does not fix the problem.

Background

When you upgrade from CatOS software release 5.4(2), the WS-X4013 supervisor hangs after the reset, following an "Update NVRAM Successful" message.

Problem Symptoms

A WS-X4013 supervisor card in a Cisco Catalyst 4006 chassis may hang when upgraded to a new software release from CatOS release 5.4(2). Often the last message displayed before the hangs is "Update NVRAM successful."

Workaround/Solution

This problem has been fixed in CatOS software revision 5.5(7).

Use the following workaround to recover a hung switch:

  1. Power cycle the switch while remaining consoled into it.

  2. At the console, press Ctrl + C while the switch is booting up. Pressing these keys prevents the switch from autobooting, and makes it to go into ROM monitor (ROMmon) mode (when you see the "rommon#>" prompt) instead.

  3. At the prompt, type boot flash:cat4000.5-4-2.bin. After the switch boots up, the boot variable can be changed to load CatOS release 5.4(2) on the next reset.

  4. Reset the switch.

  5. Change the boot variable a second time to load the upgrade software version.

  6. Issue a clear configuration all command.

  7. Reset the switch again. The switch should boot with the new image.

The following workaround can prevent the problem from occurring if you follow it before upgrading your software:

  1. Issue a clear configuration all command.

  2. Reset the switch. The upgrade should work without hanging.

Note: It is possible to save your current config to a file in bootflash using the copy config flash command. Before using a clear configuration all command, it is important to save a backup of your switch's configuration. For instructions on how to do this, please see the Working with Configuration Files portion of the Cisco Software Configuration Guide.
