Problem Description

During internal lab testing of the Optical Networking Systems ONS15417 (former WaveEdge product), crosstalk between signals on different layers occurs when the ONS15417 is configured as an Add Drop Multiplexer (ADM) or regenerator. This is due to a manufacturing fault on the backplane.

W?hrend eines internen Laborversuchs am ONS 15417 (ehemaliges WaveEdge Produkt) wurde in der Konfiguration ADM oder Regenerator Betrieb festgestellt, dass eine fehlerfreie ?bertragung nicht in allen Betriebsf?llen m?glich ist. Durch einen Produktionsfehler in der Backplane Platine kommt es zu ?bersprechen zwischen einzelnen Signalen in verschiedenen Layout Lagen.

Background

This problem occurs on a limited production batch of backplanes. Internal evaluation has shown that the defective units are missing the GND layers. This causes crosstalk between signals on different layers. Consequently, the 15417 may encounter problems if configured as ADM or regenerator.

Dieses Problem wurde auf einem begrenzten Produktionslos der Backplane Platinen entdeckt. Interne Untersuchungen zeigten, dass bei den problematischen Backplanes die GND Fl?chen auf Lage fehlen. Dieses f?hrt zu ?bersprechen in den einzelnen Lagen und kann zu ?bertragungsfehlern im ADM und Regeneratorbetrieb f?hren.

Problem Symptoms

Based on internal system tests, the following impacts in field operation may occur:

• The signal amplitude of tributary channel 14 input between TPU and TUE on the backplane is reduced due to impedance mismatch caused by a missing GND layer. This does not cause any transmission error, but a tributary signal connected to the input of channel 14 may not recognised from the LOS detector on the TUE. If the signal is recognised by the detector, the operation is saved due to the built-in hysteresis mechanism. This fault has been observed in the field on 1% of systems delivered with the faulty backplane.
• If tributary inputs receive a signal with AIS, the AIS forwarding to the far end and the neighbour channel may have a low BER. This does not cause a wrong signalling or AIS detection in the network (AIS is valid if 3 consecutive times are detected). To date, no field indication has been observed for these symptoms.

  Auf Grund der internen Tests k?nnen folgende Probleme im Feld auftreten

• Die fehlenden GND Lagen f?hren zu einem ge?nderten Wellenwiderstand f?r die Verbindungsleitung zwischen TPU und TUE, der zur Folge hat, dass die Amplitude des Eingangssignals f?r Kanal 14 st?rker ged?mpft wird. Diese f?hrt nicht zu ?bertragungsfehlern, kann aber dazu f?hren, dass der LOS Dedektor auf der TUE bei Signalaufschaltung das Eingangssignal nicht erkennt. Wird das Signal einmal richtig erkannt, treten durch die eingebaute Hysterese keine Probleme mehr auf. Dieses Verhalten wurde bei ca. 1% der im Feld befindlichen Systeme mit Backplane Fehler beobachtet.

• Wenn ein F2 Signaleingang AIS empf?ngt kann das zur Folge haben, das dieses Signal und benachbarte AIS Kan?le mit einer geringen BER beaufschlagt werden. Dieses f?hrt aber im Netzwerk nicht zu einer AIS Fehlalarmierung. Bis jetzt wurde dieses Verhalten auch nicht im Feld beobachtet.
  Workaround/Solution.

Workaround/Solution

The backplane must be replaced if a terminal mux is to be reconfigured as regenerator. The backplane should be replaced if the ONS15417 shows one of the above symptoms. Issue a standard warranty repair request if a replacement backplane is required.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

The faulty backplane can be identified by the "PQ-106-0037 00" label which can be found at the front, upper right side of the backplane, above the TPU modules.
