Problem Description

In the Cisco Catalysts 1900/2820 series, a Virtual LAN (VLAN) configuration cannot be saved to flash; therefore, the system cannot operate in VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) server mode, or in transparent mode. The system can still operate in VTP client mode. In VTP client mode, configuration data is not saved to flash. When you reset the system to factory defaults, it comes up in VTP server mode with one default VLAN; however, the system should come up in server mode with five VLANs.

Background

This problem is caused by improperly programmed flash chips. The flash programming vendor write-protected the VLAN configuration data sector, instead of the boot code sector. When VLANs are added, the save-to-flash operation fails, and the system switches to VTP client mode. When you reboot the system, the VLAN data checksum fails, and the system resets VTP to factory defaults (the server mode with five VLANs). However, the flash write fails, and the system comes up in server mode with one default VLAN.

Problem Symptoms

A Virtual LAN (VLAN) configuration cannot be saved to flash; therefore, the system cannot operate in VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) server mode, or in transparent mode. When you reset the system to factory defaults, it comes up in VTP server mode with one default VLAN when it should come up in server mode with five VLANs.

Workaround/Solution

The solution is to upgrade Cisco Catalysts 1900/2820 images to 9.00.04.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

The Cisco Catalysts 1900/2820 series serial numbers can be found on the packout box and on the back of the switch.

How To Upgrade Software

For general software upgrade instructions, see Updating Firmware Configuration.

To obtain the software image:

For Standard Edition Catalysts 1900/2820 Series Switch Images, refer to the Catalyst 1900/2820 Software documentation. Complete the registration information to download Catalyst 1900/2820 Software. Please be sure that you fill in all required fields before submitting the form.

For the Enterprise Edition Catalysts 1900/2820 Series Switch Images, you must have a SmartNet Contract. Go to LAN Switching Software to download the new images.

If you do not have a SmartNet Contract, and require the Enterprise Edition, please open a case with the Cisco Systems Technical Assistance Center (TAC) and reference this Field Notice.

How to Identify the Date Codes

The date codes are integrated in the first seven characters of an 11 character serial number. For example, in the serial number, FAB0433A275, the the date code is FAB0433.

Switches with the following date codes may be affected:
