Problem Description

A minor hardware problem can occur during POST (Power On Self Test) on the supervisor if the configuration includes a *single* WS-X550x (Supervisor II) and any combination of WS-X5234-RJ45, WS-X5236-FX-MT, and WS-X5237-FX-MT line card modules. This problem is intermittent in nature, and can occur with all current software releases lower than 5.5(3) or 4.5(9).

Note:? This Field Notice is applicable only to switch configurations that consist of a *single* Supervisor II (WS-X550x) and any combination of WS-X5234-RJ45, WS-X5236-FX-MT, or WS-X5237-FX-MT line cards. Configurations including redundant (standby) Supervisor II's, Supervisor IIG's (WS-X5540), Supervisor III's (WS-X5530) and Supervisor IIIG's (WS-X5550) are supported, and not affected.

On a high occurrence of system resets, a configuration composed of a single WS-X550x (SupervisorII) and any combination of WS-X5234-RJ45, WS-X5236-FX-MT, or WS-X5237-FX-MT gets a switching bus timeout due to the port configuration process. This failure occurs whether or not there are any connections on any of the ports.

Problem Symptoms

Below are three examples of console output from a switch that is experiencing a failure due to this unsupported configuration. "EXAMPLE 1" shows a sample boot-time console message, "EXAMPLE 2" shows sample output when executing the show module console command, and "EXAMPLE 3" shows sample output when executing the show test 1 console command:

At present, the combination of any WS-X5234-RJ45, WS-X5236-FX-MT, or WS-X5237-FX-MT linecards and any single one of the WS-X5505, WS-X5506, or WS-X5509 Supervisor II's is not supported. However, it is planned that the next release of NMP software: 5.5(3) and 4.5(9), will resolve this.

In addition to a software upgrade, there are three possible solutions to this issue:

  1. Do not configure any combination of these three specific line cards with any Supervisor II supervisors, when the switch has only a single supervisor and running software below 5.5(3) or 4.5(9).

  2. If your switch currently employs this unsupported configuration and encounters this problem, remove the offending linecards and reboot the system. Re-insert the linecards once the supervisor is online.

  3. Configure the switch with a standby Supervisor II. This anomaly does not occur when a standby supervisor is present in the switch configuration.

Full hardware functionality fo these linecards exists when configured with either the Supervisor IIG, Supervisor IIIG, or Supervisor III.
