Problem Description

A change was made to the Auxiliary Interface Protection (AIP) card to prevent the potential for shorting on the +/-48 VDC power inputs. During the manufacturing process the 8200pF filter component can receive small cracks caused by thermal shock. These cracks cannot be seen during the inspection process. Cracks can produce a gap, which creates the potential for current to flow through this part of the circuit. This in turn can cause an arc to Frame Ground under the AIP.

Background

A single field incident was reported. The incident was investigated and a product defect in manufacturing was detected and corrected.

Problem Symptoms

Potential failure to the AIP and loss of power to the shelf.

If you have any of these AIP boards installed in your systems and have not already been contacted by a Cisco representative, you should send an email to otbu-tac@cisco.com or contact our Technical Assistance Center at (877) 323-7368.

Workaround/Solution

Cisco Systems is initiating a Class A upgrade to AIP boards with part numbers 800-06741-01 and CE-67-11-00015 revisions P05A, P05B, and 005C. AIP boards with the part number 800-06741-02 and later are free from this defect and are not subject to this upgrade.

The change-out of AIPs should be done by Cisco Customer Advocacy for all production systems. The customer should not remove or replace AIPs on production systems without Cisco Customer Assistance or CTAC personnel support. If the AIP replacement is done by a Cisco Customer Advocacy representative, the replacement will not affect service. Please return to Cisco Systems all original AIPs that customers replaced in non-production systems.
