Description

PA-2FEISL-FX

Not all versions of this product are affected. See details below.

PA-2FEISL-TX

Not all versions of this product are affected. See details below.

Problem Description

A problem has been found that affects 2-port Fast Ethernet/Inter-Switch Link (ISL) port adapters installed in Versatile Interface Processor (VIP2)-based Cisco 7500 and Cisco 7200 systems. These conditions could cause failures in Cisco 7200 systems and in 2-Port Fast Ethernet/ISL port adapter VIP configurations in Cisco 7500 systems.

Cisco recommends that you replace the 2-port Fast Ethernet/ISL port adapters.

Note: See the information contained in this Field Notice on the proper procedures for 2-Port Fast Ethernet/ISL port adapter replacements.

Background

Anomalous packet handling behavior was detected in early revisions of the PA-2FEISL hardware as described in bug CSCdm74172.

The 2-port Fast Ethernet/ISL port adapter provides inter-virtual LAN (VLAN) bridging and routing for Token Ring uses, rather than high-performance Fast Ethernet connectivity. Native Fast Ethernet users have been advised to use the single-port Fast Ethernet PA-FE-TX or PA-FE-FX adapters for higher performance.

For more information, see the Fast Ethernet Port Adapter Family (PA-FE, PA-2FEISL) data sheet.

Problem Symptoms

Using the early hardware revisions of 2-port Fast Ethernet/ISL port adapters indicated below could result in anomalous system behavior, including dropped datagrams and packet errors.

Workaround/Solution

The issues described in this Field Notice have been addressed through a hardware change to 2-port Fast Ethernet/ISL port adapters. PA-2FEISL-xx cards with hardware revision numbers equal to or later than the hardware revisions listed below are not affected. Any hardware revisions earlier than the versions below should be replaced at your earliest convenience. The key indicator of whether or not your board is affected is the hardware revision number (bolded below for reference purposes):

PA-2FEISL-TX and PA-2FEISL-FX

Hardware revision 1.2 SEE NOTE**

Hardware revision 2.0

Use the show diag slot command to determine which type of port adapter is installed in your system. Specific port adapter information is displayed. Here is an example of a 2FEISL-FX port adapter in port adapter slot 2 on a Cisco 7200:

Router# show diag 2
Fastethernet (TX-ISL) port adapter, 2 ports
        Port adapter is analyzed
Port adapter insertion time 00:02:27 ago
Hardware revision 2.0 Board revision B0
Serial number 8500290 Part number 73-2618-03
Test history 0x0 RMA number 00-00-00
        EEPROM format version 1
        EEPROM contents (hex):
           0x20: 01 6C 01 00 00 81 B4 42 49 0A 3A 01 00 00 00 00
           0x30: 50 00 00 00 98 04 00 00 00 00 FF FF FF FF FF 00

Because the failure may occur during normal network conditions, we recommend you upgrade all affected VIP2-based Cisco 7500 and Cisco 7200 2-port Fast Ethernet/ISL port adapters.

Note: Because of different ID programmable read-only memory (PROM) formats and how the show diag command translates on some systems, the hexadecimal values programmed within the main hardware and minor hardware fields of the hardware revision string may appear differently. The value for hardware revision 1.2 appears as hardware revision 1.02. The key point here is that hardware revision 1.2 and hardware revision 1.02 are equal.

Solution

Because the failure may occur during normal network conditions, Cisco strongly recommends that you RMA all affected VIP2-based Cisco 7500 and Cisco 7200 2-Port Fast Ethernet/ISL Port Adapters
