Cisco TrafficDirector

Field Notice: Extremely Slow Data Retrieval from the Network Analysis Module

May 12, 1999

Products Affected

TrafficDirector 5.5.1 and 5.6

Problem Description

This problem was found internally.

TrafficDirector 5.5.1 and 5.6 are extremely slow when you upload large amounts of data from the Network Analysis Module (NAM) or when you install a property file.

If you are a registered CCO user and you have logged in, you can view the bug details.

Problem Symptoms

Some operations take too long to complete. A test was performed on the NAM that used data capture with TrafficDirector 5.6. TrafficDirector 5.3 outperformed TrafficDirector 5.6.

TDIR 5.6: 1min == 400 packets

3min == 1150 packets

6min == 2400 total packets uploaded

TDIR 5.3(a): 1min == 800 pkts

3min == 2600 pkts

6min == 5300 total packets uploaded

This problem is NOT related to the NAM, but to TrafficDirector 5.5.1 and 5.6.

To date, no customers have reported this problem.

The Cisco Test Engineer has identified that TrafficDirector 5.5.1 and 5.6 sendout spurious requests to the NAM, that cause some operations to take an extremely long time to complete. TrafficDirector 5.5.1 and 5.6 send approximately 100 requests to each port, even though the NAM responds to the first request.

Note: This problem is most apparent using TrafficDirector 5.5.1 and 5.6. TrafficDirector 5.3 does not seem to generate as many spurious requests as TrafficDirector 5.5.1 and 5.6.

NetScout is committed to fixing this problem in TrafficDirector 5.7 which will be released in the BG Maint II timeframe (July).

If customers discover this problem, we recommend that they use TrafficDirector 5.3 until the bug can be fixed.

This problem is NOT related to the NAM, but to TrafficDirector 5.5.1 and 5.6.
